I just logged in and found this Post from Dave B.
Very sorry to hear that sad news.
I was speaking to him recently and had no idea that he was getting close to passing away.

We had lunch together not too long ago and had a wonderful time talking about past times in our lives. We met at the Denny's at Sepulveda and Burbank. We gave each other a heart felt hug before leaving. That was the last time we saw each other.

Many great memories of him and his dad who ran a car repair shop on Ventura in the 60's and 70's. His dad always had a big Cigar hanging out the side of his mouth and was a very colorful and unique man.

Arnie was a very talented guy and was always fun to talk to. He was happy to hear that I picked up some of his verbal expressions and still use them to this day.
I feel blessed to have known him.

We wish the best for his family in these difficult times.
As if 2020 wasn't bad enough, we lost a great Soul in losing Arnie.
I feel very sad at getting this news, I cared for him like a Brother.

As if 2020 wasn't bad enough for us all, something else has happened in late December.

Speedbumps are being installed on Mulholland Drive now.

This is a recent photo of Mulholland Drive just West of Coldwater Canyon in the Straightaway we call European Straight.



One of the Firemen from Station 99 told me that more Speedbumps are being planned to slow down the Cars that are racing late at night.
Since the Pandemic started I hear a lot more loud racing and Doughnut action happening at Benedict Canyon and Mulholland around Midnight on most nights.

Even the locals have been posting on the Neighborhood site called Next Door Beverly Park.
Here is the latest Post from this site.

"Jerks again racing and roaring on Mulholland late at night. Yet again last night, cars repeatedly screaming around Mulholland/Beverly Glen way beyond speed limits, screeching their tires making illegal donut turns, with engines roaring past disabled mufflers, and congratulating themselves on waking our families up in the middle of the night. They could easily kill or maim themselves (in which case these the-hell-with-laws geniuses would doubtless sue our city for millions) or innocent drivers among us coming home. Are the police really unable to deal with this? Stake it out on a Friday night or two? Can’t some of the private security companies that patrol all around here not gather evidence and/or intervene?"




You can see the second Speedbump about 100 yards further down the Straight.

I have not driven the Carrera for some time due to a leaking Rear Main Seal.
The gas tank has been drained. After fresh fuel is put back, the fuel lines to the MFI system will be purged so no bad Gasoline that is remaining goes into the MFI Pump.
This is very important!

After starting it a few times and getting to Temperature, I'll remove the Engine/Transmission and put a new Rear Main Seal in behind the Flywheel.

Then back to the DMV to get current Registration.
At that time either the Car will have to get Historical Vehicle Plates to avoid the Smog Laws or the Car will have to be re-registered as an older Vehicle to avoid them.
The Car is rarely driven so it's a real drag to have to conform to current Smog Specs.

At second glance, those don't look all that terrible to anyone in an air-cooled 911. GT cars may have a tough time. There are some right outside my work that I don't even slow down for in my 911, granted I'm not going full tilt.

My 'Mulholland' hotrod project is underway, and will hopfully be in my hands soon, although it won't be seeing Mulholland too much--I've found early morning ACH/Malibu drives to be much more pleasurable. '69 911t, '67 aluminum block with webers, and a decent amount of suspension modifications. Hope to see some of you guys out there.

I wish that were true.
The Smog requirement is set by the year on your Car's Registration and Ownership Certificate, not on the Car's Vehicle Identification Number.
The Carrera's Registration states that it is a 1976 Model Porsche.

The Odometer shows 4737 miles.
This is exactly how many miles it has been driven in 45 years.
I had hoped that the Car year breakdown for smog would be moved a few years as the DMV said they would, but so far it has not happened.
I will find an acceptable legal solution to this problem.

Well, that sucks but it's time to move on. This isn't the 80's or 90's. Yeah, I was street racing in the 70's but one could leave Long Beach at 9 pm and drive up the 710 to the 5 to 101 and be on Sunset Blvd in 30 minutes. All this while seeing maybe 30-40 cars in the thirty mile junket. That is until you got off on Sunset

I was shocked when I looked up L.A. County's population in 1970 — about 7 million. I didn't think it would be that high because there was room (or so it seemed). Now, it's 10 million but feels and looks like double that. No more space but 3 million more residents.

What's even more surprising is that the population level has remained stable since 2013. There is a lot more 24 hour activity than 50 years ago. The only time the freeways are relatively empty is 3 am. And even then there are a lot of taillights and headlights. It's not a ghost town after midnight as it once was. Even with the bars open to 2 am. Anyone was foolish to be in city traffic just after 2 am.

But now a drunk doesn't stand out as much because there are always 100 cars within sight. Make that a few million at 5 pm.

This is no longer the place the Beach Boys sang about.

I echo your thoughts and sentiments. The past is behind us. The passage of time changes everything in our world whether you like it or not (and I don't like it btw).
So we adapt or adjust to changing times to stay healthy and happy with a positive attitude when possible.

Not just Mulholland but much more is changing fast in our world in terms of Socially, Politically, Financially, and most importantly Environmentally. I believe it is important to stay informed and be aware of these changes to be prepared for the future.

And Chris Banning's RSR is included. It certainly deserves a better photo, but perhaps the smallish b&w photo speaks to the wonderful mystery of its heritage and time being the undisputed king of Mulholland.

If I had a scanner, I'd include it here, but I don't. I'm sure one of you can make that happen.
