Now that I learned picture posting again, I can't reload, edit on the old posts where the Tiny Pic and other services went down. Anyone know how to fix the posts where the pictures disappeared?

Some of the lost pictures of our Cars I had previously posted, our Turnbull and Mulholland driven cars:

Our bait, license plate! The car has turned 10 second 1/4 at 128 mph thru the traps (Slicks and multi-stage NOx) in it's heyday! This car has a whole lot of miles on Mulholland, as that was part of my Fathers commute, for a time. Dick Guldstrand has borrowed, swapped cars, road and driven with my Father, they also both almost were arrested together a few times!
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1620086888.jpg

Our 1967 911S, and 3.3 Garrett Turbo, both have very race built engines. The 911S has been on Mulholland, but the Turbo has not been there, at least not any history, that I am aware of! The Turbo was a dealership modified car, with a mix of Andial, Aase Bros stuff. The 911S is built up by my brother with vintage race Vasek Polak, and Andial race parts, and the guy who used to cut the heads for twin plug, did machine work, etc.

Some of ours cars staged all freshly washed, ready to go to a Bug-In, but the Vette staying home. 3 of 4 have played on Mulholland (the Ghia on the right, no!).

My Race Car, currently getting rebuilt even better, meaner. It is as close to an IMSA spec car as you will find. This doubled as my Canyon racer, and it missed the Mulholland era, but it has been taken to Mulholland, but generally the King of Turnbull Canyon (Retired naturally ). I graduated the 1980 Bondurant IMSA Competition Licensing school at Sears Point, but ended up in the Navy, instead of my dream to IMSA race! This car has multiple wins at Riverside Raceway, Ontario Motor Speedway, and Willow Springs. It was a Regional championship car twice in the SCCA in our Region 19. As you can see, I cut the squarish roll cage out, and did it closer to the style of the other Cavalier Corvette Club SCCA racer. The snowplow nose got severely crunched and destroyed, so you can see I had none on the nose. I ran no headlights for quite awhile. I also changed the hood, to the L88 style, and this was the hood from that actual car parked next to mine. Also getting rid of the Banana yellow was a must!

My 1963 Roadster, 358 cubes, under car headers, race suspension (Ex-SCCSCC Slalom car), and Dad's car. My two younger brothers, were kind of into Miami Vice. We were not being allowed entry to an event, claiming no race cars! Do we look like race cars? My father is across the street embarrassingly in an event organizers face, me holding him back, I tried diplomacy, he wanted his pound of flesh for the gas and time wasted. My two brothers were just sitting, going here we go again. I think Dear old Dad, was black balled from many organizations. He would have destroyed single handedly Cars &Coffee events, if he would have taken any interest in those, before he passed away!

Not just Mulholland but much more is changing fast in our world in terms of Socially, Politically, Financially, and most importantly Environmentally. I believe it is important to stay informed and be aware of these changes to be prepared for the future.

The fact that pretty much anyone has access to a car much faster than "fast" cars of the 70s (Toyota Camry anyone?) makes this not as surprising as it is disappointing. The *&^#$ification of America, it seems.

I am getting notices like this one below from the neighborhood online group called Nextdoor.

It seems that there has been a resurgence of fast driving on Mulholland and the surrounding streets lately. I can hear it late at night.

I've seen more Police presence of late, probably due this going on more frequently.

If you are coming up to Mulholland now please be watchful.

❣️PHONE #’s: SEE PHOTO ATTACHED HERE FOR ALL THREE OF HIS OFFICE PHONE NUMBERS AROUND US. A motorcyclist died due to an extreme speeder just two days ago here. Animals being hit and killed as well as nightly damages to well-parked cars along OUR road where WE live. Ive sent twitter messages to all the council persons + an urgent vm for LADOT today. I WILL ALSO CALL PAUL KORETZ’s offices at all 3 locations to put a zing on this request asap. WE NEED EXTRA HELP. We moved here about a year and a half ago now and its a constant nightly “Indy 500” outside after dark to the middle of the night. Insane. Just insane really and its GOT TO COME UNDER CITY CONTROL BECAUSE THE DRIVERS JUST DONT CARE WHO OR WHAT THEY HIT, DAMAGE AND KILL LONG AS THEIR RAMPAGING “FUN” CONTINUES. So PLEASE ASK FOR DIGITAL COUNTERS AND TRAFFIC TICKET CAMERAS TO BE PLACED ALONG OUR ROAD ASAP - BECAUSE THE CITY MAY AS WELL MAKE A TON OF MONEY ON THESE IRRESPONSIBLE DRIVERS WHO DONT MIND TO MAME, BREAK AND KILL ANYTHING THEY TOUCH ON OUR ROAD EVERY NIGHT. *THIS IS REGARDING OUR NORTH BEVERLY GLEN BLVD ROAD BETWEEN MULHOLLAND AND SUNSET. I get these notices too; Nextdoor is a localized kind of FaceBook portal. Lots of folks have bought recently up in and around Mulholland and are freaked out at the speeders, day and night, especially around the Laurel Hills area. They paid big money for their homes and want peace and quiet in the canyon.
Plus, like new clubs overpowering older golf courses, new cars are more than most drivers can handle, especially when little Tommy takes out daddy.s AMG/M/Lambo/McLaren etc. Between Laurel and Coldwater we have had half a dozen road closures this year already to fish up cars gone over, and 1 where a main power pole was hit and no power for 4 days. The last ironically was a little old lady, not speeding, just hit the wrong pole.

This is someone who did not research the property before buying. This reminds me of the residential development and encroachment to a race track. First time there is a race after new residents move in they go, "What's all that awful noise?"

You know what? Fook them. Put a rattlesnake in the mailbox.

I'm not condoning night time racing. I'm just saying it is what it is (as has been for what? 40 years?)

Here's another example: buy a house near the Hollywood Bowl (hell of great neighborhood) and then complain about parking on performance dates. These people should be made to live in South Central L.A. or Compton for a year.

Or many parts of Long Beach, the 'Sewer by the Sea'.

Re: Recent Events

Hello, New member here.

My boss sent me this thread, I thought I would share some insights as a prominent member of the current mulh*lland scene.

The scene is as alive as ever. The age range of the fast guys is pretty young... around 19-27yrs old.

There are two distinct groups of car enthusiasts who drive the road now. Rich daddy's money kids in modified bmws and porsches/other exotics who show up to the road at 8pm, drive recklessly in front of civilian traffic, get the cops called and then leave, ex:

https://www.instagram.com/p/CALd6YZglyY/?utm_medium=copy_link

https://www.instagram.com/p/CANzqLqAY7k/?utm_medium=copy_link

https://www.instagram.com/reel/CMP3dX4HcF6/?utm_medium=copy_link

https://www.instagram.com/p/CErwlVFps1j/?utm_medium=copy_link

These are the guys who cause issues with the residents and police, and who the Nextdoor people complain about.

We do not associate with these guys and if they are still there by the time we show up, we bully them off the road as fast as possible.

And then there is us who show up around midnight, do what we need to do and leave quietly.

The four fastest cars on the road are currently:

1) '02 Miata
2) '07 Civic
3) '10 Bmw 135i
4) '04 Honda S2000

I built/own both the Miata and the Civic mentioned, and built the s2000 for a friend. We time the old raceway starting at gr*ndstands and ending at skyl*ne Dr.

modern exotics don't do well. they don't have the suspension travel needed, are far too aerodynamically dependent especially in the front, ride frequencies are far too high, especially in the front, and the electronic diffs and stability control get confused over road surface variations, etc...

So most people now choose golden era hondas or Mazdas as these cars are light, still use modern suspension designs unlike any classics, and have a wide aftermarket parts selection. There are only like 3 active people left who know how to do fine tuning setup for mountain cars.

Unfortunately, due to the increase in police presence due to the social media drifters, most of us have abandoned running mulh*lland at night and have moved to other mountains farther east.

I have lots of videos and content and great stories to share about the modern scene, as well as an Instagram account where I post about what's going on in the LA canyon scene (pm me for the @).

feel free to ask any questions. seems like I'm the first person from the current round of drivers on the road to speak in this forum.

Nice photo and good comments.

Late at night is a great idea, no one wants to see any innocent person get injured while jogging or biking. They have a right to enjoy Mulholland as much as anyone else.

Please be careful and always pre-run to be sure of no existing hazards.
In the 70's three of my good friends got badly beat up for Racing and that was when Law Enforcement was more tolerant, so watch out.

Running from Police is a bad idea, especially now with Cameras at every major intersection. It's a different World now and it's better to comply and pull over in my opinion.

Thanks for your post.

TCracingCA 06-01-2021 08:06 PM

One thing I don't condone, is putting Civilians in danger and car against car racing is for the track. We always did a recon, then point to point to see what she will do. Used to have empty industrial to test and tune.

True Race car suspensions I agree, not generally the fastest on these types of roads. A good street performance suspension is generally not enough. About 4 inches of shock travel is about all I have had, that is 3 inches in compression, 1 inch of extension. Then I shear heim/sphericals (but have moved up to 1 inch for like the camber rods), so I do run race level springs tuned to stay in that shock range, and staying off the max cut down bumper stops, oil pan at risk drop! Front spring rates general in the 600+lb range, not as high as I would install for track use for the Vettes, as I have more weight transfer to handle. For the Porsches are more sway bar dependent, lighter spring rates. One is a total 935 suspension car, and with a mix of Elephant/Rebel/Tarrett/Patrick racing stuff. Mostly Rebel Stuff out of Morro Bay.

Mulholland is way too built up and populated. Our cars too noisy for those venues in the old haunt, the roads over in the Santa Monica range area have a different vibe, than back in the day. Forget the tourist areas of the road, like the Snake.

We have taken road trips, just for the roads, but also using them for an end destination. Places like G-16 Carmel Mountains to Laguna Seca, Hwy 158 Fernandez Rd toward Santa Margarita, then up Hwy 1, out of Ojai north, and around Castaic Lake, toward Willow Springs, Old Glendora and old Baldy Road, etc. But more high performance touring. I avoid the Motorcycle haunts, as tend to run up on them being dangerous like Ninja alley Ortega Hwy, or death trap Azusa way up above the dams and the East Fork turnout, going clear up near Crystal Lake. Some commute roads like up in Angeles Forest, depends on the time of day, whether we buzz them.

Recon recon recon, and do your deed, move on fast. Etc.

I remember Miatas, back in the day in a 70 second Slalom run, we used to waste the faster of them by 10 seconds, even the 5.0 liter Monster ones!

I am happy to see a new generation, up and running, "with the right mindset"!!!!!!

Thank you for the warning Banning. I don't drive up there, but hike in the area. I heard a car went off near the east end of the course a couple months back and another car went off near the dog park not to long ago, I was told the later had fatalities involved.

What bothers me about some of these people is they make comments without knowing the law. I don't know if this applies to California or just Santa Clara County (where I'm from), but to my knowledge it is illegal to issue any type of moving violation unless it is issued and signed by a sworn peace officer (The story goes; an officer in SCC got a red light photo ticket, knew the law, ticket was overturned, red light cameras in SCC were removed, and precedent was set), so these people that think that we should just throw up cameras and use the photos to issue a citation need to educate themselves before saying things like that.

Those types of comments cause misinformation to be spread about and then people get all riled up about something that can't even be done, because of the existing law. I suspect that most of these people are transplants who think they know what California is about from what they've seen on TV and such and in my opinion they are a big part of the reason why California has become less fun.

If I'm wrong someone please correct.

FYI, I am in the camp that there are unfortunately way too many people along Mulholland, which means spirited driving needs to be done elsewhere. Maybe the LAPD should think about opening up their training facility off the 5 and host some driving classes and/or competitions. I live on Coldwater and the amount of accidents on this street is insane. I've seen some bad ones, a few months ago something went into the side of an apartment building. Lived on Coldwater for 6 years and people have always driven fast, but the amount of speeders and accidents seems to have picked up over the last couple of years.

I seem to remember reading something earlier in this thread that stated that the Santa Monica Mountains were supposed to be protected and nothing was ever supposed to be built up there, Banning is this true? The signs in the area I hike in look like signs you would find in a National Park and there are US Department of Interior markers along the trail.

The Highway Patrol out in Devore, was hosting slalom events for a time on their training facility, and thought they would double that up with a safe driving message for the streets. It was at a Western States Council club thing, I think (All Corvettes) and they entered their hot shot Fox body Pursuit 5.0 Mustang. Boy did we beat them badly, it was a sheer embarrassment. They went out first to show us, the slalom club guys, how a professional Officer could post a fast time around their course. There place on the leader board was very very short lived, as Street driven, weekend slalom car after car, put them farther and farther down the board. A few guys let them take a run in a few Corvettes, that was not good, as their driving ability for the discipline was not quite up to speed, but I bet some Corvettes were bought in months to come on CHP salaries. The Cops were really being totally very cool, my Father unfortunately was never Politically correct. One Officer came over to our C3 and said we would really hate to have to chase your car down, my Father's reply, "In what universe, do you think you could!" I dont recall them opening their training track up ever again.

At Brother's the Police were a big part of helping Willie, host those drag race track events on Terminal Island. Damn that land to my knowledge goes back to Sic Sic (SCCSCC) when we took the cars down there in the 1960s for slalom in and around the big fuel oil storage containers all the way over near the Vincent Saint Thomas Bridge. I got old black and whites of those events my mother took. She entered our Ford Country Squire Station Wagon a few times at Lions Dragstrip, in the grudge night stuff.

In the modern, I will call it Comparison running, but have checked cars against modern GT-3 RS, and C7 Z06. We are still holding up well for our age!

Dad just bought his Custom Dana Chevrolet Corvette, 1st day with it at work. Ordered thru his friend Dick Guldstrand, modified by his friend Dale Armstrong (NHRA fame), who delivered it. He was long time friend, back to the days,at 10,000 RPM shop in Torrance.
