Petersen Museum 2nd Interview
One of the Videographers named Dave volunteered to ride along with me to control the Cameras. We drove up Crecent Heights Blvd which turns into Laurel Canyon at Sunset Blvd. It was a beautiful afternoon around 4pm.
On the way to Mulholland I expressed concern that I was not familiar with this Car and that it belonged to someone else and so I would be not driving it at crazy speeds. We decided to make three runs from Skyline Drive to Coldwater Canyon after doing a trial run at slow speed to check out road hazards, traffic, and any people potentially walking along the Racecourse. This is a very important step to insure the safety of anyone else sharing the Road. I was surprised to see a lot of traffic and tourists parked up along this particular stretch of Mulholland. Many were there to enjoy the incredible views offered after all the rain we recently had. We pulled over at Skyline after making a pre-run so Dave could turn on all the Cameras. One on the front hood, one looking out the front window and one pointed at me while driving. The rest of the crew waited for us across from the old Grandstands location. |
Petersen Museum 2nd Interview
On one of the 3 runs we did I was able to make a competitive run from Deadmans to Grandstands. This shook up my passenger who was not prepared for this excitement. When we were done he was pale and shaking pretty badly after which I apologized to him, but he seemed grateful for the experience. I also said that I was sorry that I could not go faster due to all the traffic and not being used to the Car that I was driving. I never exceeded 80mph.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1680370472.jpg We got some incredible footage and sounds from the red-line shifts and sliding around thru Carls and Carls Junior. I only made 2 Car-passes and only got 2 people that flipped me off when I was turning around at Coldwater. I smiled, waived, and said sorry to them. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1680370533.jpg This is no longer the 70's or 80's and there is too much traffic on Mulholland now. It is too dangerous and irresponsible to drive like this and it will be the last time that I participate in this kind of driving in the Racecourse. The Petersen deserved this video footage for the sake of posterity while it was still possible. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1680370584.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1680370619.jpg I did cross over the double-yellow a little bit a few times much to the shragrin of my passenger. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1680370675.jpg It turned out to be a wonderful day and I'm grateful for this "Mulholland Experience". |
Ehem... Mulholland Dr "in Mexico".
|
Thrilled that you had that experience, Banning. Look forward to seeing your interview.
It is cool to see that a number of the cars you photographed in the garage, including the 917/30, were at the Amelia a few weeks ago. |
If that old road could talk ?... OH MY !!!

"The Rob Walton Industry Floor"
Our vault tour guide made fun of us for being from Arkansas, only to have Rob's Le Mans-winning GT40 as the climax of the tour. I responded with a "Not bad for an Arkansan!" |

Petersen Automotive Museum Preparation
The Petersen Museum asked for a vintage and current Photo for the exhibit.
This photo is from 1976 when I first started to drive the Carrera on Mulholland. It was a beautiful warm evening as I remember and I had just made a couple runs to the 405 and back. This was an incredible era with great friends, fantastic music, television shows, and no traffic on Mulholland. The best of times. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1680984011.jpg Here is 47 years later. Found similar jeans, jacket and the same hat I used in that early photo. These many years have passed rather quickly along the road with many great experiences along the way. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1680984536.jpg |

Excellence was expected.

I don't know about you, Chris, but I get a feeling of completeness for the RSR now. It's finally being recognized as the Porsche Royalty that it is. When I first heard of the car, it was more myth to me than reality. But reality is in full swing, and now it will be on display for the world to see and read about.
Very cool. Again, congratulations. |
