Angeles Forest Conditions

Thanks for posting that Derek.

Last Monday Jane and I went up to Angeles Forest to check out the road conditions. I was looking forward to running Angeles to break-in my Blue Streak Tires.
They won't get hot enough on Mulholland. More speed is required.

It was the first day the whole forest was open after the fires.
I had heard that most of the roadway was repaved, and it was with new painted lines.

There are a couple of checkpoints like this one on the road up from La Canada.

The Eyewitness News Van was parked in the turnout. That's Gene Gleeson sitting on the viewpoint. Saw him later on the news in same location.

Some areas look pretty burned out.

Switzer Canyon, just north of Mt. Wilson was cleared by the fire. Luckily, all the trees survived along the creekbed. This is a favorite hiking spot.

Mount Wilson was saved, and looks as beautiful as ever thank goodness!

Angeles Forest Conditions cont.

There was snow in many areas with new grass growing up all around.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1260060942.jpg

There was also rapid erosion occuring along all stony roadways.
Trucks were visible working the whole day clearing debris as they probably have been doing for weeks.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1260060987.jpg

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1260061034.jpg

On the drive out to Lancaster, more fire damage is visible.
The expected rain we are going to get should promote lots of new growth. Spring comes eternal! Wait for March.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1260061081.jpg\

I stopped here because it looked really strange. Looked like sand dunes sort of. It was piles of ash flowing over the hillscape. Very unusual.

The roads looked good and ready to play with. Derek, Radu?

Now it's raining... and it will be a mess up in Angeles Forest. Looks like the New Year's Run will be elsewhere this year.

Looks like you had fun Derek. Porsches do well in Autocross I've heard.
It sure seems like a 911 is made for it.

Well this hit a brick wall, lets try to breath some life into it. I'm headed over to Griffith Park to see the light show, on the way back going west bound on Mulholland. I'll be in the dark blue Tempest with the lite blue wheels from the Thanksgiving Day run. Anyone going to be out?SmileWavy

Tea-Bagger Alert

The PCA Pano came in the mail this week with a "From the Regions" note on the Greystone concours d'elegance held in L.A. last August. Nary a mention of the KotH and Chris's "Special Category" award. Then they have the nerve to mis-caption a contents-page photo of Grand Am GT champ Leh Keen as the Walter Rohrl "conversation." Wrong and wrong! An insult to three men who love to DRIVE Porsches, all in one issue!

Give me Excellence or the Esses any day of the week... The KotH deservedly made the cover of one of those fine publications.

Merry Christmas!

Thanks very much for that. Other very nice cars were not mentioned as well.
There's just not enough room in the article to name everyone that won an award.

It was a lot of fun however and I will always look back on that event with good memories. Thank you PCA.

Merry Christmas to everyone and may 2010 be the best ever for you!

I did a little run tonight. It was just after dusk. The fog was out. The road was wet in patches. And it was empty all the way up Sepulveda, to Mul, to Java. That's where I ran into a pack of lollygaggers in the middle of the Identicals, and bid my time until the Race Course, where I was free again.

Happy Christmas to all my MIRRC friends.

porsche4life 12-24-2009 09:39 PM

I wanted to go for a Xmas run around here... But we got snow... :(

So I will have to try my best at Snownuts in parking lots in the VW. :)

One of my favorite things about living in LA...

Whenever I feel like it...
whenever I get the urge...
late at night...
traffic free Race Course...

that about says it.

Guys, like a regular Dan Brown, I now have found out the answer to the ancient original riddle: "What happened to the Mulholland King of the Hill RSR?"

It was overtaken by Stijn! SmileWavy

Derek, you are one of the few that have the true "Mulholland spirit". (Some others from this thread also share this spirit).

I wish you had been around 35 years ago. You would have fit right in and you would have loved it. Any of the groups would have welcomed you. I know it.

Your respect and appreciation of Mul along with your driving ability makes you a modern day die-hard Mulholland personality. I say Bravo! And thanks, again...

Banning, it would be great to see the KotH RSR out and about in the Malibu canyons on New Years morning.
