What happened to the Mulholland "King of the Hill" RSR?

I was contacted by Paul Haddad a couple of months ago. He has written several books on LA places and lifestyles. His new book that he writing has focus on Mulholland and we have spent some time on Mulholland going over places and secrets that have been lost over time that I know about from childhood. I have not mentioned these facts here because they didn't seem relevant however they are quite interesting.

Before contacting me, Paul had already read The Mulholland Experience and this Thread along with other similar resources.

During our discussions and drives we touched on many aspects of Mulholland including our Mulholland Legend, Charley Woit.

He did some research and found what we have all been looking for, the truth.
I was told by Charley's old friend Tiger Joe that Charley died exiting the 14 Freeway at the Sand Canyon Offramp going too fast for the turn.

Paul found this during his research.

The Signal (center of the page)… says Charley died on Vasquez Cyn Road, gives a few short paragraphs.

That's crazy! I always thought he died on a freeway.
I'll never look at Vasquez Canyon the same way now.
I assume a lot of us have ripped through Vasquez without even thinking about it.

You have to watch that video ^^^^!! A guy who says he's the contractor that will repair the house actually walked between the Bimmer and the house while it was being dragged by only the suspension, actually just the wheel spokes. See 8:30 in the vid. That's a stupid as it gets, folks. The recovery guys weren't all that good which is a very good reason to stay the f away until that thing is gone.

I've only witnessed one thing in 50 years that was more stupid than that. So there's no mystery, a concrete truck backed up a caught power lines with the barrel while it was spinning and all of this was with the truck in a huge puddle of water. Fortunately I stopped him, told him to not get out of the truck while I threw a rope over the lines and got them off the metal part of the truck. I didn't feel like being electrocuted that day. Anyone going to his aid would have been. This was in Alabama, not Mulholland Drive.

Jesus, is this insane.

This year I have received several complaints from residents about Racing on Mulholland that have been posted on the Nextdoor media site. This is one of them.



Mulholland drag racing gone wrong! Recognize these vehicles/license plates?

Approximately 6 17 year olds racing were racing on Mulholland around midnight. It appears the BMW hit a white Tesla Model 3, sending it off road down the hillside. This occurred just past Java Drive going towards Coldwater Canyon.

The Model 3 was involved in the racing, though his friends tried conjuring up a false narrative that they just happened to be around when their friend’s car “brakes failed”. One of the kid’s who told me this narrative had a police scanner walkie talkie and said, “well this is a popular road racing route”…

The cops did absolutely nothing. They had no consideration of the danger these kids put our community in. Had I arrived 15 minutes sooner, I could’ve been hit, as my street is just around the bend.

The BMW was able to steer clear of the officers, call his own tow truck and relocate his vehicle to the gas station at Ventura Blvd and Coldwater.

One of my neighbors has the accident on their security camera and the teens conspiring. This is an ongoing issue, and the City is playing with fire by not enforcing the law.

If you recognize any of these vehicles and/or these license plates, please send me a message. They need to be held accountable for their actions.

This sure aint like the old days when you could get away with almost anything on Mulholland.

Now with cell phones and phone cameras, social media, and an overcrowded Mulholland, any un-approved behavior will likely end poorly.

Also all cars are watched at every intersection with Cameras located up high on light poles and telephone poles. They are hidden well. It might be fun to document every location.

I am curious if they have License Plate readers too. Is facial recognition in our future? Perhaps, because the darn future has arrived whether you like it or not.

Be careful, late at night is still your best bet. Also be mindful of The Rangers. They are on a power trip and have been known to abuse their authority.

I believe you are correct Derek. First speed Bumps were installed in European Straight where you can really open it up and then East of Truckstop where it's fun to carve out the turns.

I pray that they don't put any in the Racecourse or near Fire Station 99 including the long straightaway west of Beverly Glen.

Time will tell.
