i can't recall exactly where Vilem lived(what ever happened to Robin?)but I do remember that celeb atty Paul Figin{sp}that drove an excaliber with P plates that said "FIG" who lived on the euro straight.Obviously there was a liberal sprinkling of industry types all over dem parts.I grew up with Marlon Brando's son's Christian and Miko, their home was on a private road off Mul near mid pits west.Chris had a land rover that we would four wheel up the lots in Deep Cyn before any homes were built,as well as the "Golf course" which is now comprised of 15mil steel framed homes known as Beverly Park.Redd Foxx used to live in the corner house at Deep Cyn x Mul,what trip that guy was!.Rod Stewart has lived all over Bel air for the last thirty years, but during the seventies he lived on Mul,and if anyone has a copy of his Footloose and Fancy free album from 77 the back jacket cover shows him walking down the double yellow at the top of the esses.

What a character indeed. While working for Barris, Redd used to visit for hours at the shop on Riverside. He would insist that I was the only one to drive his cars when they were delivered to the house but I was NEVER allowed IN his house because I was white! I Never got beyond the garage.

Back in the days I had heard that Vilhem B. Haan(correct spelling?) lived off of European Straight. At that time I was working in Santa Monica as a Porsche Mechanic. First for the Porsche Clinic and then for American & European Auto Repair.
I would occasionally stop by VBH for some auto accessory or Radio antenna or similar item(pre Mitcom days). I probably saw you there. I also attended University High School which was nearby VBH if I recollect correctly.

I knew of a few celebrities that lived on or are living on Mulholland presently.
Just east of Woodcliff is the huge estate that belonged to Wilt Chamberlain, his huge house still rests above Mul and the Stone Canyon Resevoir.

On Mulholland, across from the Benedict Canyon terminus lives John Tesh and his beautiful wife Connie Seleca. Two years ago, my friend Dan T. recovered two dogs on Mulholland and took them Fire Station 99 near Benedict. The dogs had tags, the owners were called, and guess who shows up? John Tesh with his wife, however she was still wearing her nightgown. Dan almost passed out when he saw her incredible beauty. Age has not affected her at all. Wowee!

The house below, previously Dougnuts, is owned by a band member from KISS, the guitarist of the group I think.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1176398372.jpg

As mentioned previously, the first Identical belongs to Warren Beatty.

Across from Java to the east is Sumatra Drive. As mentioned previously, Chuck Conners lived here on the right. On the left was the residence of Elizabeth Montgomery. She played Samantha Stevens(the witch) on Bewitched. I loved that show, and McHales Navy, Addams Family, Andy Griffith, Pettycoat Junction and many more. TV was good. That's when TV was entertaining without being crude and vulger.

Java Dr. (and it's offshoots) for some reason has had many personalities over the years. In the 60's, Tim O'Conner lived midway up Java. He was the star of Peyton Place, the original one. Across the street from Mr. O'Conner lived William Peter Blatty, the author of "The Exorcist". The house at the end of Java has had several notables. First owned by a real estate magnate(whose daughter I dated off and on for years), then by Nell Carter until Coyotes shredded her puppies in the back yard. After that, came "Slash" from the group Guns and Roses. He retrofitted the house with massive sound proofing, I guess for rehearsal purposes. It's now owned by the manager for Yanni, the new age composer/musician. The first lot on Java on the left belonged to Mr. Herrick, the famous astronomer.

Firth Dr. comes off of Java. Dustin Hoffman's parents built and lived in the second house on the left down Firth. It has a tennis court at the bottom of the canyon with a funicular to get to it. At the end, lives Jacoby of Jacoby and Myers, the famous lawfirm.

As mentioned before, Beverly Park, formerly the "Golf Course" is packed with stars, atheletes, and other famous folks.

At the end of European Straight lives Earnest Borgnine. The trash pickup men say that he is the nicest guy. He was the star of McHales Navy, a great TV comedy from the mid-60's. I accidently scared him one day while avoiding a rabbit. He did not see the rabbit and I think he assumed that I was aiming for him. If you see this Mr. Borgnine, I apologize for startling you.

Many other stars dot Mulholland "East" but I will leave that to someone more qualified than myself. I only know of a few near the racecourse like Glen Cambell, Madonna, Steve Martin, etc.
Please will someone chime on in with the info for Mulholland from Coldwater to the 101 Freeway.

I thought this thread had peaked about 35 pages back, but it keeps getting better and better.

With technology today available in the '70's, can you imagine a series of WEB Cams installed along the 'racecourse' so anyone in the world could have watched the action?

Anyway, there have been several ideas mentioned about new books, movies etc. Keep those ideas coming and remember, when the money runs low perhaps we can all pool our resources ...

Thanks everyone for their input!

Banning 04-12-2007 10:11 AM

I forgot to mention again the hilltop belonging to Jack Nicholson and Marlon Brando just west of European Straight. The news crews would hang out in front on Mulholland whenever there was trouble in the Brando house.

Nope, I actually learned to drive a stick in a 66' Mustang with straight 6 and 3 speed manual (remember those 3 speeds on floor). That thing sounded like a UPS truck. The pedals were really far spaced. 1st gear was a granny gear and 2nd and 3rd were really long. Speed shifting, H&T and double clutching came natural. Besides clutches cost money when you are young.

Heel and Toe is actually a misnomer:It actually involves the ball of your foot and the rear side of your foot (ok heel). The name, stemming from earlier automotive designs where the accelerator pedal was on the left and could be actuated with the heel while the brake pedal was actuated with the toe.

Thanks Chris, That would be awesome. I love driving that road so much, that proximity to Mulholland was the deciding factor in my home purchase decision.

Way to go Jeff, pretty close to reality.

You got that very close to the correct position on Mulholland, and the expression on his face. Just different clothes.

I forgot the rabbit. Repost!
This is the picture that went thru my mind with Chris's story of Borgnine. I was laughing for 5 minutes imagining tough guy Ernest standing on Mulholland Drive after that moment.

Chris I hope you see the humor

In the MGB, with the pre-requisite Patty Hopkirk throttle pedal (Petrol Pedal??) the pedals were "top hangers". So the action was to hit the brake and rock your right foot to blip the throttle. So that would make it "toe & toe". The Camaro had a bottom hinged gas but the pedal itself "floated" by having a pivot in the center and top hinged brake. So the action on that was "heal & Toe" however you had either hit the pedal in the center or push it way down at the top of the pedal. Which really makes it "toe & stomp". Then there's the Lotus where one hits all the pedals with just one foot. That would be called "healtoe"? Or the Mustang where, apparently, one has to "ball & side" the pedals.
Give me Tiptronic..........!

We both have that learning process done on similar cars. Mine was a yellow 66 notch with a 289 4-speed. I took it up on Mul until 1971 when I got the red Boss 302, which became a magnet for wannabe racers driving on the wrong side of the double yellow..

But wait, there's more!

With every adjustible metric spanner, you get a free standard spanner. Example:

Proto #704.
One side says "100mm"
The other side says "4 inch".

Don't believe me? Go grab any crescent wrench and check it out.

Chris I would love a copy. Dave will not be able to join us, he is running the Iron Bottom Rally in Rick Van Beverens old 914-6 now dubbed the "Evil Cockroach" Rick would be proud that Dave is carrying on the "Porsche Tradition" with that car. In fact that was the car that turned me to the Porsche world at a very young age.

I like. I can hear Borgnines voice.....

Considering we took our activities pretty seriously there are those lighter side moments on Mul that we are reminded of that make us laugh.

Right about where the For Sale sign on the left is in that picture I always remember a Japanese Gardner that on Saturdays would be out doing his job. I remember he was there for years- always there at about 400pm.

Everytime I was riding with someone or in my own car we would blast by at speed down the European he would drop his rake and run about ten feet up into the grass. When you are young these things are funny.

My friend Leo had just lowered his Mini truck and we went up to Mul for a daytime run. The truck had a rear axle bias valve (primitive anti-lock) and he didnt adjust it so it kept locking up the rear brakes. He comes flying down the European going east and locks up the brakes leaving two black ribbons of rubber. Low and behold the Japanese Gardner is right there. Rake drops as usual and this time he leaps head first into the bushes. We were laughing pretty hard.

About half an hour later we come back the other way. Feeling a bit sorry we cruised by really slow. The Gardner is standing there smiling. Just as we get up to him he sprays us through the open window with a garden hose. That Gardner got the last laugh.

Mulholland videos

Dave,

I'm not able to play your videos. What player do I need? Am I doing something wrong? Thanks for taking the time to add these videos.

Everyone,

I've been reading this since it started and feel like I've missed out because I was born too late. I feel the same way every time I watch American Graffiti. We had our own version back here in Ohio but nobody in our group was interested in sports cars or road courses. It was all drag racing which was cool too. During high school I raced my old Nova all the time. We had an area that everyone cruised...more like American Graffiti and we would all know when there was going to be a race and we'd all head to Manufacturer's Row. It was where a bunch of old businesses were and there were a couple really smooth quarter mile strips. I then enlisted in the Navy in 1991 and lived in San Diego where I bought my first car....a 1974 Porsche 911. I still have my 911 and will for the rest of my life until I pass it down. Can't wait until we get some new pictures a certain chopped 911.

Also, that was really interesting finding out that the previously mentioned property was once owned by James Dean. Growing up going to car shows with my family....we went to shows in Fairmont, Indiana where James Dean was from. I've been in Cincinnati for a few years now and we are finding out that there are some pretty good Porsche shows around here. Thanks to everyone who has shared their stories on here so that all of us could enjoy them.

Chris
