After Marlon Brandos house is a sweeping right hander. Some call it Beverly because it's where Beverly Drive used to connect to Mulholland, now it's just a short branch of the street left over from the making of the Dean Martin Golf Course that never transpired.

Instead of the golf course we have Beverly Park in its place, a very exclusive place to live. Paula Abdul, Riba Macintire, Shak O'niel and many other big stars live there. I've seen Shak leave in his Ferrari with his head sticking out of the convertible.

After the Esses come the Identicals. So named because they are identical big blind turns that go around two ridgetops. The first ridgetop belongs to Warren Beatty, (he just tore down his house last week) up on top of the first turn you see below.

Here is a view of both of the Identicals from Java Dr. The closest one with all the trees is Warren Beatty's place. It was originally built by Laurence Melquior, the famous Danish opera singer. His son wrote Lost In Space but was ripped off by Irwin Allen who took credit for the idea. Irwin Allen did create Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and other TV series.

This house is where there used to be a huge flat lot across from the perfect viewspot of the Valley. We called it "doughnuts" because we used to go onto the dirt lot and go around and around so many times that the dust would roll onto Mulholland and block traffic from no visibility. We found it entertaining at the time.

Coming back through the second Identical you can see they are installing new gaurdrail. A few months ago, a car-load of teenagers went off here. The two in the trunk flew out and had to be airlifted. That's the current craze called "trunking". Too bad the driver wasn't familiar with Mulholland.

Wow, Chris. I didn't realize you could see all the way back to "the course" from your place. When you're driving it, and you pass Coldwater, it sort of seperates the road in your mind... like they're two different courses.

You remember the old dirt turnout across from this house before the Overlook was built. There was a trail which actually was an old driveway leading east about 200 feet from the pullout. It was overgrown and the concrete foundation remained there. The house that was there was never completed and burned down eons ago.

I friend of mine does survey work for the city and that property was owned by James Dean. It was bought just before he died.
He was living on Sutton St in Sherman Oaks waiting for the home to be completed when his tragic accident occured.

Youtube can be frustrating. I have been playing with a video/audio format that will be clear enough for the web, but it's hard.

I used to go and play after school down that driveway in the 60's. It was fun to ramble thru old abandonded houses on Mulholland. There are no more, since property got so expensive all the forsaken houses have been torn down.

Woweee! Thanks for that information Jeff. All these years on Mulholland and I never knew it was originally James Dean's property and unfinished house. Too bad his dream wasn't realized. I met the author of the new James Dean book at Autobooks. It turns out that Dean died in that collision because his foot got caught in the pedals and thus prevented him from flying out as did his Factory Porsche Mechanic who survived. Apparently the foot pedals are very close together in a Porsche 550 Spyder.

Yes, it is like two separate courses for me. Since all groups from the MRA and after used "East" as their stomping ground and it had(has) a formal beginning and end, it is separate and special. Groups before the MRA(that's three that we know of) congregated in different spots. One group from the early 60's would hang out down Dixie Canyon(Mulholland West). When the cops would be present they were safe down this rarely used road. This is located in the middle of "West" and near my house. The name was changed to Beverly Ranch Road by the residents so that they could improve their property values and be included in the 90210 postal code, even though they are really in Sherman Oaks.
In the early 60's there was a first King of the Hill who drove a 1956 250 Testarossa. He went on to become a famous racecar driver. For his privacy, his name will not be mentioned here.

Another "celebrity" of note that lived off Mulholland, was Vilem and Zaz Haan....Chris and MM might have more info on this. MM and I first met years ago when I worked in the Vilem Haan auto accessory store on Santa Monica Blvd and MM was working at the AIR store on the other side of the 405........Vilem B Haan was the first Auto Acc store around I believe...their stuff is actually collectible today(Haan steering wheels etc) I remember Vilem and Zaz lived off the European straight? a driveway that went down to a couple of houses?
