Any way to limp along an HP imaging drum?

My all in one says to replace it and will not print, but it's not an in stock item locally. Is there some way to get a bit more life out of it?

drum is Q3964A

There is a service key sequence that should reset the "replace drum" code. I don't have my service manuals any longer, but I may have it written down somewhere, Ill have to look.

What model printer is it?

Let me do some looking, I know I have a stack of reset codes for service intervals, the task is finding them....

Let me get back to you...

Thankfully my login still works on the HP site....
Unfortunately, that particular color drum has an internal counting unit that can-not be reset. Instead of the page count being stored in the printer memory, it is actually physically counted in the drum.

Looks like the only option is to replace.

Here is the HP store link: www.hp.com/buy/parts

Sorry I couldn't provide a fix for ya

The website at fixyourownprinter.com might help. A quick search showed this fix for a different model of HP Laser Jet. Might be worth a try:

"The drum life is supposted to be between 6000-8000 copies depending on how many color vs black only prints are made. I assume there is a chip on the drum unit which tell it when it should be replaced. One thing you can try, I do not know what will happen, but there is a NVRAM reset procedure which resets all the counts in ROM and places the machine back to factory default. This will not work if the drum uses a chip to tell when it is done. The NVRAM reset is done by powering off the machine. Press and hold the Go button. Turn the printer on and continue to hold the Go button. After the Go, Ready, and Attention LED's tuirn on, continue holding for at least 20 seconds. During this process, the Attention, Ready and Go LED's will each turn off. Release the Go button. The device LEDs will begin cycling from front to back. The NVRAM init process runs unitl the printer is in the Ready state."

  1. Purchase an imaging drum
  2. Lift the scanner assembly.
  3. Open the toner cartridge access door.
  4. Remove the dust cover.
  5. Open the front cover.
  6. Lift the two levers that hold the imaging drum.
  7. To remove the old imaging drum, pull it out of its slot.
  8. Unpack the new imaging drum. Place the used imaging drum in the bag and box for recycling.
  9. Remove the protective shield from the new imaging drum.
  10. Insert the new imaging drum into the printer.
  11. Lower the imaging drum levers.
  12. Close the front cover.
  13. Reinstall the dust cover.
  14. Close the toner cartridge access door. After you close the toner cartridge access door, the control panel displays the 'Initializing' message. Wait for the printer to stop calibrating before you proceed.
  15. Lower the scanner assembly.

Regards,
Peter
