A coyote just ran in front of my car....in Seattle.

OK...WTF is THAT about?

We were just talking about coyotes in the 'roadrunner' post. I run out to get thai food, and I'm coming back to my house, and freaking yote runs right in front of my car!!!! I live right in Seattle, about a mile from UW in Laurelhurst. If you know where the UW center for urban horticulture is, it was right there. Seattle is a pretty green town, meaning there is lots of green space and parks, but....wow. That was not something I expected to see.

A year ago or so I was flying a Cessna 150 and had to brake hard to not hit the pack of coyotes froliking on the runway at the Tacoma Narrows airport.

I wrongly assumed that they would get out of the way with an airplane quickly approching. Didn't faze them a bit. They're not very afraid of human activity.

The house across the street was build in 1939, mine in 1947. Were not exactly in the suburbs here.....so its their sprawl. We better call Al Gore to solve this terrible wildlife sprawl problem.

I have seen them near the runway at a local airport, but never on mine. My problem on my runway is deer....especially when corn is planted in the field next to it. I have had deer cross my path on landing rollout numerous times. If I ever hit one and total an airplane, you can bet I will be in jail soon after for declaring all out war on every effing deer I see. Deer season or not, I would have a sore shoulder from blasting away at anything brown and furry. The old "if it's brown, it's down" rule would definitely be invoked!

Sea-Tac actualy employs a couple of guys full time to keep the place clear of them.

Downtown dumpster coyotes are in virtually every big western town, and many eastern towns. "They Only Come Out at Night" (old Edgar Winter tune?) holds for the most part, but they do get disturbed, or brave, and are seen in the daylight at times. Time to unlimber that Weatherby...

They will EAT your cat! We had them even in FL when I lived there. We have tons of them here in PA. They make a nice looking coat.

They're all over the place up here in Anacortes. And they're very healthy. They live off neighborhood cats and smaller dogs. The "lost cat" signs are everywhere. And when they get ahold of your cat, there's nothing left. It's clean crime scene as relayed to me by one of my neighbors. She also said it sounds gastly to hear a cat get torn apart by a pair of coyotes.

We had one in Central Park not too long ago. They think he came down from Westchester County by swimming across the Sputen Duyvil, and then worked his way down to the park. Evidently he had just eaten a pigeon in the bird sanctuary and somebody spotted him by Fifth avenue. Over a dozen police gave chase and they brought out a helicopter with FLIR to aid the search. Finally they shot him with a tranquilizer gun after an eight hour chase. I'm not surprised: he'd have to be one hell of a determined animal to make it down in the first place!

don't you remember the one trapped in an office elevator downtown a few years ago?

see one every few months going to and from work
down here south of Renton

saw a animal control truck in front of one of the office parks here Monday...
first thing that came to mind was,"wonder if they cornered a coyote"

seen any bears lately?

TSA regulations have now mandated a 12-foot perimeter fence with some special features. Razor wire, I think. We have awarded the first of several contracts to get this done. The pilots will be happy, as they occasionally see coyotes from their work stations if you know what I mean.

Actually, the more interesting stuff is the birds of prey manager folks. We value the older, wiser falcons and hawks and such. They know how to stay away from the airplanes, and they keep the other birds away.

Coyotes are apparently incredibly adaptable animals. Scary when you have small children or pets.
