Photoshop help

There are some things I'd like to do with photos via Photoshop. I used to have to use it for my digital media class, but that was awhile ago, and I'm a little rusty now. I'd like to do something along the lines of a pic like this:

Blurred black/white background with the car clearly in focus...the pic I'd like to use is this one:

Not sure exactly what you're asking, but it's very straightforward - first cut (or magic-wand) the picture of the car (nice, BTW) and paste it into the background on a new layer.

To do the background, you can simply use the "change mode" to discard the color information and convert to greyscale and then various effects tools for the blur effect.

That's a nice effect. First, you should start with as high of a quality pic as possible. The one above is fairly blurry and small. Hopefully, you have a better one.

Then, follow these steps:

1) Trace the outline of the car with one of the lasso tools. I use the polygonal lasso tool

2) Once you have the car traced. Copy it to the clipboard, then paste it on a new layer.

3) On the original background layer, remove all of the color using the saturation tool.

4) Perform a gaussian blur using the values you think look best.

That should do it!

Ahh so many ways to skin a cat.

1st, need better quality hi res photo.

Here's the "non-destructive" way to do this

Duplicate layer. Add layer effect color to bottom layer, in dialog box choose black as the color and choose color from the dropdwn that says normal.

I top layer use pen tool to create a path, save working path, command click path to select image.

Add layer mask and choose reveal selected.

Use blur of choice on bottom layer, suggest using a feather on top layer before applying layer mask.

Pen tool givces you the most control to make selections. You can tweak them all night and day. layer masks let you "hide" the stuff you don't want as opposed to permanently deleting it. layer effects allow you to alter appearence without destrouying the original image.

Have fun.

The car is a little blurry, and can be sharpened up to an extent. Without using a larger original, it will look worse blown up or printed. What do you want to do with the image? There's ways to affect the quality of the black and white portion, but here's what I can do with the original you've posted for now. It doesn't look natural if you blur the foreground, unless that's what you want. More contrast there usually looks better.

Here's my attempt. I use the "Magnetic Lasso tool". I also curse a little, as I do this on my laptop and am too lazy to get my tablet. This should should have taken 5 mins. Motions way works well for this.

Path it out, (you won't be sorry). Use the path to make a selection, invert the selection, Layer>New> Layer via Copy, Desaturate -100%, Filter>Blur>Shape Blur (pick a shape, this one was the © ) setting 10.

Awesome! You guys are great! I have a higher res pic @ home but that's the only one I had access to from the computer I was on. The normal size of that pic. at least the size it came in on from my digicam, was 1200x1600 I believe...I'd have to go back and check tho...

But seriously, thanks so much for the tips! I've got CS2 if that helps....don't know if the controls/options are the same...I've also got Elements 4.0 as well...

The tools should be nearly the same, but CS2 will have greater depth, hopefully with B&W conversion you can fiddle with color channels and greatly influence how the B&W appears. Do all your adjustments with the highest-resolution original you have, then maybe save your work as a photoshop file as well as a JPEG so you can return to the un-compressed photoshop file later. Do any sharpening after you've re-sized the image rather than before.

Nothing was a sucker play. I was genuinely asking. Both times.
