Yeah, that's just because you're a noob and don't know JW.

Yes, but perhaps irreverence speaks some truth. The original poster, some pages ago, became part of a potentially bad problem because of street racing. Could happen to the sainted John Walker as well, if everything turned to scheiss. I'm sure Walker was describing a pretty straightforward light-to-light drag that our grandmothers could do (and probably win, give a Turbo), but "the noob" has a point.

Nice shirt!

1980 911 sc 02-21-2007 03:21 PM

Craig, I need that shirt in 4XL. I laughed so hard. Seriously, that is funny stuff.

I hate to brag, but my 80 SC uses WRXs as floor mats at autocrosses.

I think Danny's collection is at the least, superb, based on the pictures. I am jealous.

If you are even remotely street racing, you get what you deserve, tickets or total. I like to play on the street, not so much now that I an a family man...

tc-sacto 02-21-2007 03:31 PM

I know the WRX is a capable car, but I get a kick out of the peopel who think it is a street version the the WRC car.....just like the chevy malibu is a street version of the NASCAR racer we see on Sunday. I'll just run down to my nearest Chevy dealer and buy one.

As far as I know only Porsche, Ferrari and Ford sell a version of their race cars to the public.
Porsche 911cup
Ferrari Stradale
Ford Mustang FR500c

Well said. I've owned plenty of Jap cars and understand that many of them do perform well. I sold an Acura Integra Type R to buy my 911. It was an absolute blast to drive on a track and auto x and it was mostly stock. One of the best handling FWD cars of all time. I don't turn my nose down to other brands, but it just so happens that older air cooled 911s have my attention. I absolutely love my '87 and no performance other brand intrigues me right now.

Craig 930 RS 02-21-2007 03:49 PM

Type R with no interior was exactly as quick on track as my 911SC @ 2450 lbs. Right on my butt lap after lap - and we both drove pretty well with more than a few yrs experience.

I'd rather drive a Mitsubishi Evo on track than a Subaru WRX.......more enjoyable for track days, IMO. But the WRX is fun to sliiiiide around the corners.

The Tshirt in an above post says it all. Not much torque in a little four banger, but she revved up to 8600 RPMs which was alot of fun.

I owed Jap cars at the time b/c A) I could afford them and B) They were all turn key cars (everytime I turned the key they started) and in college and early in a work career that is very important to a car owner plus I lived in apartments and had no garage which is important to a Porsche owner b/c it is a Porsche and not just another of the heard of Jap cars. Yes I loved my Jap cars and yes they had a high level of performance but they were not a Porsche and they do not come close to drawing the level of attention that a Porsche draws. I too like the WRX line. I too had a WRX race me on the interstate and b/c of the inexperience of the driver I killed him. I too have heard stories that end in an opposite manner.

I cannot imagine a FD does not draw as much attention if not more than a 911.

My dad has a pristine FD and is always getting stopped in parking lots and having to roll down his wondow at a light to tell someone about it.

My RX7 is funny, no one even looks at it and if they do it a reaction much the same as most on this BB. They look in disdain. At DE's some who are walking the pits to see whats there will scoff at it and its 4" exhaust tip and vented F&F style hood. I get such a kick out of the reaction to the car, sometimes I walk away from it for a while and walk up with someone looking around and listen to them make fun of it.

Then it hits the track.... End of story, perfect 50/50 balance over 400 to the wheels, running on sticky GT2 class slicks, less than 2500 lbs on the scales.

Then I get visitors wondering whats up with it. Sometimes the same people that made fun of it.

Never make fun of what you do not know. Yes my 911 is a BLAST to drive hard and VERY rewarding but it is just not as fast or well behaved at its limits as my RX7.

Autocross? Thats what I built it for. When I show up with it, its either a guy with a kit car Cobra or my RX7 that leaves with the FTD and that is mostly due to one of us making a mistake. The Cobra is a class faster than my car but I give him hell.

I love it more for not what it can do but how on one ever expects it, and how it pisses others off when it does what it does.

On topic:

Driving my 911 home from the purchase.

- in Columbia SC I had a Civic blast past me and put on his 4 way blinkers (a sign to you that you lost a race) The problem here was I was on the exit ramp getting off to get lunch.

- In Cape Canaveral Florida, A Ford Lightning blasted past me scaring me to death. I never saw him coming because he passed me on the right, I was in the right lane, he was on the entrance ramp and was excited to see a 911, he taunted me for 20 miles before giving up and moving on.

This was when I was on my way home with the car after buying it.

I cannot count how many kids in Jap cars step up to me every day I drive the 911. I ignore them all, its not worth it to get a huge ticket orworse be involved with an accident.

Is it tempting to clean some of their clocks? Hell yeah! It takes a lot of will power for me to be good.

***edit***
All that said, the 911 is 10X more fun to drive than the RX7 just not as fast. If given a choice of which car to drive on any given day (even a DE or AX) I pick the 911 because its a more engaging car more of a drivers car. But, the RX7 is not shabby either.

Thank you. Most of the cars, however, are "bastard children" that were abused by their previous owners. I get 'em at a good price and spend the next five years "un-screwing" them.

Whenever in SoFLA, shoot me a PM to visit.

"As far as I know only Porsche, Ferrari and Ford sell a version of their race cars to the public"
Here in aus you can buy a race spec car direct from subaru - anything from stock engine tuned up to the close equivalent of a wrc car. Can't be registered of course but if you want to rally... Check out www.subaru.com.au if you're interested.

I swapped my 02 subaru sti for the c3 I'm driving now. The sti was a much much much faster car - in the wet, in the dry, straight line, corners whatever. At that point the sti over here only had the 2ltr engine as opposed to the 2.5 litre US had & we've now got. Anyone who thinks their stock 30yr old 911 is faster than a new sti has just got no brains (assuming the same driver) - period.

Which is more fun to drive - that's a whole nuther story.

Why learn the look of Japanese econoboxes, in 2-3 years it'll be junk and they'll look way different.

I have a 71 Buick that smokes those WRXs and SRT4s, how many 71 Japanese cars do you see on the road?

But there are just not too many stock 30 yr old 911s....Most lurking here have been "improved."

Can we stop calling them "Jap cars"? That's as rude and racist as calling something a Kike car, or worse.

I think it's more like calling them yank, aussie, limey, or kiwi cars for some folks.
