I would own an STI in a heartbeat. But don't want to spend the cash on one...would rather put it into tires and track fees for the SC. The funny thing is that my GTI is pretty competent and the track and I think lap times wouldn't be that much slower. BUT, I couldn't run a whole season without breaking something serious in it.

I instructed in an Evo last month. The thing was an understeering pig. Could not get the thing to rotate (might have been the student though). They have gobs of power and are easy to drive up to 8/10's, but I think that last 2/10's can be tricky to extract. And I don't think they'll take the abuse that a 911 can.

But as I've said before...my SC is a time machine. An STI/WRX/Evo is not.

I think some of the things people are missing is respect. I am a fan of Porsche's of all ages. I race with people who drive everything from WRX's and Evo's up to Corvette's and an Elise (very quick BTW.) One fella I race with drives old Nissan's and Datsun's.

I respect everyone of these people, not for the car they drive, but for the people they are. I am right now working on a 77 911S. I race a 2002 Ford Focus ZX3. I won the PCA championship this year and I don't look down on Porsche owners or anybody else. In the end we are all there to do one thing...HAVE FUN!

In the end...Porsche is better LOL

I call my P-car a Nazi car actually my RX7 mechanic called it that and I thought it was funny. When I had my MINI he called that British Rubbish. All in jest I must point out.

If I had an Italian car (I am Italian) I would call it my whop car or Ginny car. I call my self a greasy ginny all the time. My receptionist used to be shocked I would call myself a racial slur (she is black) after a conversation she realized I do not offend easy.

Now, this whole Rice and Jap conversation came up on an RX7 board years ago. This same board frequented by Japanese Americans and Japanese in Japan. The concensus was it was no big deal, none of them (except for one white guy living in Japan and fighting the fight for his Japanese brothers) felt its was "that" derogetory. Most felt it was an abreviation of the word Jap-anese and since rice a promonant staple in Japan it seemed funny that a car from Japan would use rice.

Maybe we should call American cars saturated fat machines? ... nah too many words. How about SFM's?

ToddM 02-22-2007 03:46 AM

The car does not make the driver.

kwm 02-22-2007 04:55 AM

So if we call them Jap cars is it going to hurt the car's feelings? Is my Miata going to first start crying, then refuse to start, and then sue me? Good God!!!! Whoever made the comment about not calling them Jap cars is EXACTLY what is wrong with this country. Lighten up a bit. Laugh at something. Live a little. And, grown up too while you are at it. Plus most people are just truncating it b/c they don't want to type out the full word Japanese and when is an abbreviation an insult? America is too damn sensitive these days. Is it just an American phenomena to feel like you are entitled to SO much respect and courtesy in life that if someone disrespects you that you flip out over it. I bet a $100 that the guy making the comments about the term Jap cars isn't even a Jap himself. There is the other thing that kills me if it doesn't even involve your race then just shut the hell up about it.

Had a customer that had one in addition to his BMW M3 and 993 C4S - The WRX is quite the fun little car. Personally, I don't like how it looks, but it sure can handle.

Everything else - I refer to the first line of my signature

Jims5543 02-22-2007 09:36 AM

I went home for lunch on my way back I had a craptastic Ford Escort that was primarily purple but lots of other colors too revving at me and goosing at me in traffic.

One day one of these loosers are going to rear end me with their surging at the back of my car in an effort to show off/taunt. I might get out of my car after that and beat them to death.

Craig 930 RS 02-22-2007 10:02 AM

That was classic, Jim :D

I went for a ride in a Corvette C4 (I think, I'm not a Corvette expert) around the Streets of Willow a couple of years ago. It was on Goodyear F1 tires, and was mildy modified with stiffer springs/swaybar/shocks etc. Anyway, I saw what real torque can do with 20+ years of suspension evolution.

Later that day, I was running the stop watch, and in the hands of Derek Hill the Corvette ran the exact same time as the 911 turbo. I was glad that I didn't drive my 3.2 911 to the track that day. The Corvette and the 911 turbo blew away all of the Ferraris Testarossas, Lamborghini Countach, Diablo, Mondial, assortment of air cooled 911s, etc etc.

A Subaru would have been laughed out of there so fast I would have felt sorry for the owner. There are cars, and then there are cars.

Funny, about four pages back I posted a comment that it was so characteristic of this forum that a discussion that could have devolved into racism and moronic road rage was actually polite and adult, and how well that spoke of our group.

Spoke too soon. The others have crept out from under the floorboards.

+1

This type of thread is the one that, in my opinion, disintegrates the Pelican team and community.

unsubscribing....

I must admit that I've enjoyed reading through the thread (and for the most part, the discussion has remained civil).

My feeling on these cars is that they are highly capable and I have great respect for them (the cars). Many of the drivers leave much to be desired when it comes to road etiquette, however (not to say that I wasn't the same as some of these kids 20+ years ago but I survived and grew up).

rennch 02-23-2007 01:25 AM

Quick story, but one of my faves.

1993, Long beach Island NJ. In my pre-Porsche days.

The scene:

A group of stoplights (seriously...3 lights about 150ft apart) in a very touristy area of a very touristy island.

50-something year old man driving (what appeared to be) a stock VW karmann ghia. As a Ghia owner at the time, I was impressed by this nicely restored, light yellow car.

Next to 50 year old man, at the light, was 4 "guido's" (you know the type...they predated the ricer crowd) driving a Mustang 5.0 convertible.

for some reason, guido guy decided to pick on Ghia guy at the light, and start revving his engine.

This would turn out to be a bad, bad idea.

Ghia guy didn't even acknowledge guido guy and his cronies. just stared straight ahead and minded his own business.

I'm watching this interaction with a mindful eye....and smirked that the Ghia guy was taking the high road.

My how things changed when that light did.

The light turned green, and the Ghia literally EXPLODED off the line, front wheels lifting off the ground. A SEA of white smoke spread. The car didn't even get full traction until 3rd gear, and even chirped when it got there. Needless to say, the Mustang/Guido crew was quite surprised.

HOLY SH**! I Exclaimed, as the Ghia driver let off the gas enough to get traction and LEAPED into the 7-11 two lights away. I had never seen a car that powerful.

Well...as I rode my bike into the 7-11 parking lot, I caught my first glimpse of the license plate: I8AV8. This, apparently, was not his first rodeo.

The guy was a nice enough guy, and very matter of factly said "yea...every year its a Ferrari, or a Porsche or one of these kids driving the "latest greatest"".

It seems that our Mustang boys had decided to race a former VW drag racing champion with a "sleeper" 300hp turbo engine stuffed into a 1600lb Karmann Ghia.

Bad, bad idea. But one of my favorite stories.

While not directly Porsche related, I thought you'd appreciate.

Jims5543 02-23-2007 03:37 AM

This thread sucks and so does this forum. I am not posting here again for at least 3 seconds and I am not clicking my mouse to read any threads for 2 seconds.

Boo Hoo I am throwing a E-temper tantrum. Who is the immature one?

BTW- emptyo - very good story, very funny.

In 1986 my cousin let me drive his 1973 911s Targa with a 3.0 engine in it. Think about the red light racers in the mid 80's the Mustang GT was king with 225 HP. I was 19 years old and lets just say I was mopping up the roads of Boca Ratton with that 911. I never picked a race but if a Mustang or Camaro indicated they wanted to go I was more than happy to suck out their headlights.

oceanvue 02-23-2007 03:59 AM

Here's a story you may or may not find relevence with. Back in the early eighties I lived right next to a deep slow portion of the Deschuttes river in Bend Ore. Ihad about an 8 month old black labrador named Reggie. (wait there's more) Next to the river there was a large strip of land that occaisionally a large man (looked like he was straight out of some horror movie) and his even larger German shepherd would roam. The first time the shepherd caught a glimpse of Reggie he bolted toward him and beat the holy snot out of him while "el creepo" watched with approval, Reggie had to have both ears stitched up, it was bad) About 4 months later I'm out throwing a stick in the water for Reggie and up pulls Frankenstein and his dog. He let's the dog out he bolts across the field towards Reggie, I'm thinking "oh no" Reggie jumps into the river and is standing in about 2 feet of water. Reluctantly the shepherd goes in after Reggie. Suddenly the playing field tilted way into Reggies favor. Reggie lured the shepherd into deeper water. To make a long story not so long, as the shepherd was going down for the 3rd and probably final time, the guy had to jump into the water to go save his dog. He threatened to sue me blah, blah, blah and he was visibly shaken as was the dog in fact when he pulled the dog out it was less han menacing looking. Curiously enough I never saw that man and his dog down by the river behind my house again. Sometimes it's not what you have but where and how you use it.

kwm 02-23-2007 04:54 AM

LOL....nice story oceanvue.................brings back similar dog stories of my youth and my love for our English Labs. I pigeon hole things through life, it is just a natural inclination of mine (and I feel of many others as well but society has somehow made this reflex taboo). Here is what I have recognized

Cameros, Chevelles, Firebirds Novas, (GM muscle era cars and Mopars ) = straight up meat-head hot rod grease monkey types and usually lowest in smarts and any form of sophistication or open mindedness

Mustangs = still in the realm of hot rod Ameri-kan cars rule mentality but not nearly as meat-head like and reflecting a much higher level of sophistication, open mindedness as it relates to other cars, and intelligence

Hondas, Subaru, Acuras, Toyotas, Mazdas, Hyundais, Nissans, Datsuns or any type of Tuner cars, ricers, Jap cars whatever you want to refer to them as = younger audience, today's version of hot rod kids who buy what they can afford then mod it up from there as they can afford it and daily driving it along the way, not at all unintelligent actually quite innovative and really projects in the making who have a love for cars just like I did growing up but ust in a different era

Ferraris, Lamborghini, Astin Martin = impractical, too much money on your hands, probably can't drive your car out of a wet paper sack, don't know the first thing about your car mechanically and don't want to, poser by nature, and love to attract attention to yourself, and in your opinion everything else sucks and it is not even up for debate

Porsche (non-water pumper) = a car guy looking for bang for his buck sports car fun, most likely a minimalist, knows how his car works and how to make it work better, generally has respect for other competent automobiles and disdain for over-kill vehicles like the Hummer for instance, is the most sophisticated as it relates to the car industry and has probably owned or sought after many other cars before finding their one and only resting place with Porsche

You just either get it or you don't

Jims5543 02-23-2007 05:58 AM

I got a drag racing ticket about 3 years ago. That was my wakeup call to stop screwing around on the street. Yeah, I can defend my actions, the road was empty, it was 11 at night, I stopped at the top of second gear and barely went over the speed limit, blah blah, the bottom line is I could have hurt someone bad. The guy next to me might not know when to stop and could continue to drive like a fool until he hits someone.

All that said, my RX7 got a reputation as a do not mess with car around town. Mostly with the Mustang crowd. I had a couple step up on me and both ended up in severe rapings. I have never 1/4 mile raced car for time but we suspect its a solid 10 second car. After a couple of solid rapings of so called big dog Mustangs in town no one would mess with the car anymore. It was actually kind of funny to see guys come up on it and not try to start something for a change.

One time about 4 years ago I was heading to my brothers house, it was about 10 at night and a nice night so I took the RX7. I ended up at a red light with 4 Civics and a Fast And Furious looking S2000. The Civics had jockyed so the S2000 was next to me. It was obviously the Alpha car of the group.

Now imagine your sitting there nice and quiet and these 5 cars come up, none have exhausts and theey are all revving over and over. The noise was unbelievable, imagine a field of cows all farting at once. So the light turns green and the S2000 burns out off the line, I take off quietly then stand in it. The turbo takes a second to spool giving the S2000 a false sense of winning, then the turbo hit.... by the top of second gear (60MPH) I am over 7 cars in front, shifting to 3rd would have been insulting. We ended up in a Wendy's parking lot talking. I encouraged them to join the SCCA and start Autocrossing. I saw a couple of them at the next event.

I used to go out with some friends late at night and we would run on the empty Interstate, in our heads we felt this was the best place to race, no sidestreets and speeds at around 100 would not be nearly as bad as a surface road.

Then I got into track days and decided not to play on the street anymore.

Street racing has really gotten a stigma attached to it these days, I am sure is because of all the supidity related to the F&F crowd. But, don't forget it used to be a real American tradition. I know my dad has tons of stories from when he was a teen.
