LOL here...and some truth, today, to this image. I bought my first Porsche in 1966, a then new 912. I traded in a 1966 tri power Goat that had under 10,000 miles on it's odo. Value wise in today's market, that was a HUGE mistake. But not in the driving pleasure I enjoyed. You see, back then, there was no "image" associated to owning a Porsche. Unless it was the image of being weird. We were a tight group who understood and enjoyed the quality of construction. We'd all marvel at the engineering it took to get such performance out of such small displacement, etc. We'd wave & flash lights at each other, it was a small world then...we who were "in the know". In this small town, myself and a local MD with a slate gray 356SC coupe were the ONLY Porsche owners. That is, after John Gilson moved away in his 356B. The M.D. was then in his late 50's, a very established guy, me in my mid 20's. We'd get together, he "educating" me on the mysteries of the Porsche 4 banger.

Ahhh, but with the success of the marque, things have evolved. People buy now because OF that reputation. They are buying not brilliant engineering, but cars built to match what is perceived as customer demand. They buy because of the "status" involved in owning the product. This is the natural evolution of any corporation ruled by bean counters, which is what Porsche has become. A very profitable corporation...but the essence, the genius, the sense of family, has been lost.

The people involved in the P-car scene have also evolved. As many who have posted here mention, they "always" wanted a Porsche. Perhaps much of this is because Porsches were considered "way cool" when they were kids? I'll admit it, today I don't believe that some of these newcomers...just some of them...are "way cool". Oh, they can wave checkbooks around and brag of other wealth...but that kind of ruins it for we who were around in the years before Porsches were considered "way cool".

Thus, I'm dumping my "way cool" car. Been there, done that, and too tired to keep doing it. Then was then, now is now, and then was better!

But hey, at least I can vent here & try to explain why I bought the first one, right? :)

I really never lusted after them until my cousin let me drive his track prepped 73 911s Targa for a day. If I remember right, it was bored out to 3 liters and just worked over. In 1986 when I drove it, it was hella fast and I knew as I drove it around like a maniac trying to die (Honestly, who lends their prize Porsche to their 18 y/o cousin?) that I had to have one of these cars.

I quicky realized I could not afford one and went off into the world of Rotary engines.

Then about 2 years ago, I was getting bored with my John Cooper Works MINI and my RX7 and wanted something.... I just was not sure what.

I looked at the new Elise, then looked into a MKIV Cobra Replica, then I looked into maybe buildign up a sick 1993 RX7, I kept looking around, Supra? Naw... Hmmm, maybe a classic Mini, nope! Maybe an M3? Nope... I was all over the place then it hit me. I need to find myself a 911. That drive in mycousins car 20 years prior was most memorable. So I bought books and started reading.

Then I found Pelican and started reading, then posting.

I was disapointed to see the 78-83 911's were only rated at 200HP give or take, I always feared these cars even in my 400RWHP RX7 when I saw them on the interstate. So I set out to find a good 930, that will do the trick... every one I looked at needed an engine.

So I read some more, hmmmm maybe a newer model the 1990+ cars had 250HP and up but they seemed too heavy.

Then I started reading about the 3.6 swapped cars. Moses has one and others I read about on here.

So I set out to find one. It has met and exceeded all my expectations.

I am mad at myself for not getting a 911 sooner and not wasting so much money trying to make my RX7 like it.

To me, I've enjoyed the friends I've made more than the cars - they are just the byproduct that's bought us all together. Sort of a secret society for the anal retentive.

Some truth in both of these lines, Jeremy...that's why my car is going to a true friend. I think you'd dig that. Other friends I had considered were in my age group. The actuarial tables are what they are. Hell, in tonight's small town paper, I noted a guy I went to school with in the obits. Evren will have longer to enjoy the car. He'll also not be tempted by offers from the "trophy hunters"....some others I whom considered could have been. Jeremy, enjoy your friends. :) I've had some "friends" I'm sure I'll never hear from again, now that they have learned that my old car is out of their reach. ;)

there is just something about them that is so inexplicably genius.

I bought it for Our Son (and maybe Our lil Girl) to work on and learn from as we all grew.

Yep, me too! I saw my first Porsche in late 1973 when I was in elementary school (I'm 45) and said "that's the car I'll have someday" and I bought my 1974 911 Targa (it will be 5 years ago this June) and it's been an adventure (some good times, some bad) since!

No other car make is as closely related to racing and motor sport. All the legendary circuits and racers. It all sums up one of the most manly activities in history. Driving a Porsche (at least an air cooled) puts us in the picture of being a real MAN. :cool:
