I looked at and drove a couple of 996TT's when I was looking for my next 911 (more specifically a turbo). Having a 911 I could take to work a couple of times to week (60 miles each way) was also a factor when I was looking. The 996TT fit the bill in the everyday category, but to be honest, it was too boring at speed, if that makes any sense.

Plus, one of my favorite things about driving a 911 is the way the hood and front end looks like when you are driving that. I just didn't feel it with the 996TT.

If you are serious, go lurk on the Rennlist 996TT Forum. It is pretty active.

Now that my 964 Turbo is running great, I would be curious to see how it stacks up against a 996TT, taking into account the 10 years worth of age difference.

A 996 Turbo would be the perfect car for a 75-100 mile commute on the highway where you could do 150mph, listen to a cd, and check your navigation. Other then that, I'd choose a car that you could get the most out of in manner in which you drive.

I'm with you Harddrive. I absolutely love the 996TT. No matter what people say on this board, the TT is one of the best/fastest, most equipped car for the price. They are being had for relatively cheap and are beautiful cars too. It will pull away from pretty much everything on the road and this is with a stock set up. You can get PSS9's and an aftermarket exhaust that you like, chip it and be up to 500hp in under 4000 dollars.

Honestly I think a 99xTT would be a great daily-driver for me. My commute takes me over Malibu Canyon (~8 miles of twisties), down PCH to Santa Monica, and back. Reserved parking spot at work and garage at home.

I have really gotten used to the AWD turbo driving style/feel from my Audi and not sure I'd want to go back.

The 997C4 does look sweet though. A new 997 vs. a used high-end 996 would be a tough decision as I really like the 997 (and 993) styling better.

Its interesting how the 996 styling is almost an anomaly. If Porsche has went directly from the 993 to the 997, the history books would make more sense

Still, I can't imagine buying a 997, not until they are starting to come off the 4 year leases, and the prices drop. I could buy a new 997 at this point, but why? To show off the the few people I know that would actually know the difference between a 996 and a 997? Nah. I'll let some other sucker take the depreciation hit thanks!

I just gotta love the comments from the curmudgeons on this board who feel that the 996 is too comfortable. If it doesn't shift like a truck, and leak oil, its not a real Porsche dammit! 915 mafia unite!

Why limit yourself to only one type of automotive experience? It cracks me up when young people talk about the car they want to own or buy in ~10 years here, are you kidding?? It's over, baby. Get out and burn that last few gallons.

Sad but true. In ten years, the only Porsche you'll be able to buy will be a V6 Cayenne hybrid.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the 996 Turbo. A few of the big money track guys that belong to our group ditched their RS Americas and 993 Turbos when this came out and brought them to the track. I drove in one at Watkins Glen and the power was surreal. I was doing speeds on parts of the track that I had to check the Speedo to believe. And their, in my opinion, lies my problem with the car. It was almost like I was being flown around the track in a helicopter. I felt isolated. I can go half as fast in my car and it feels twice the speed. Invigorating. If it was me looking for a later Porsche, I would opt for a Caymen and get the most out of how you would drive it on a daily basis.

By no means did I mean to say it was too comfortable (because it wasn't, they are too small with modifying the seat for my lanky, goofy, 6-4 frame), nor did I say they weren't fast. A Z06 is also fast, but I won't drive one.

I have had teh 996 discussion with someone who is very well respected on this board, and he would love to have one, says they are great and capable car, which I agree with. The look just doesn't do it for me.

So for me, a 400 hp 911 turbo that still looks like a 911, was a no brainer choice for me.

I agree with you though, I wouldn't buy a new 997, let someone else take the hit. And seriously, go over to the Rennlist 996TT forum, there are some insane cars in there.

Is this forum about cars or bucks? Who cares what someone had to pay for driving it the first year out of the box. If the car is good, really good, its worth the price. The point; is the car worth it or not. If its good, its worth buying now, not four years from now. In four years there might be a much better car and you will be looking at obsolete technology in the 997.
