silent, invisible, predictable, renewable energy

silent, invisible, predictable, renewable energy

OpenHydro
http://www.openhydro.com/home.html
OpenHydro's core business is the manufacture and installation of tidal energy systems, enabling our customers to supply renewable energy that is silent, invisible, predictable, cost effective and in harmony with the environment.

Problem solved, we can all go home now, right?

The Open-Centre Turbine is an example of a simple idea proving to be the most effective solution.

The functionality and survivability of equipment in an underwater environment demands simplicity and robustness. The Open-Centre Turbine meets these demands, with its slow-moving rotor and lubricant-free construction and operation minimising risk to marine life. The Open-Centre Turbine, with just one moving part and no seals, is a self-contained rotor with a solid state permanent magnet generator encapsulated within the outer rim, minimising maintenance requirements.

Open-Centre Technology is unique and covered by a suite of worldwide patents.

Looks too good to be true, is it?

What is the cost and what is the power (or average power if not consistent) output?

It is all about $$/megaWatt

This is kind of similar, but probably has more maintinence issues due to being underwater.

They are placing a number of turbines in the East River in NYC to generate power for some small apartments and shops on Roosevelt Island.

Its a pilot project, to see if they will work, howo long they will last..etc.

John,

The OpenHydro turbine will be underwater as well.

Here in Nova Scotia, in the Bay of Fundy, (home of the highest recorded tides in the world), Nova Scotia Power is getting together with OpenHydro with a proposal to place one test unit in the upper bay. They will work anywhere there is a current of 1.5 or more knots.

Currently (no pun intended) there are studies starting up to see what the potential effects might be on sediment distribution, animal life and livelyhood of fishermen in the area. Because there is no barrier (dam) needed, it looks promising.

Large scale development of one site in the upper bay is estimated to provide 1/7 of the total energy need of the Province of Nova Scotia (~1,000,000 people).

We'll see how the environmental impact review goes.

What do you mean?

Between the sun and the moon there is more energy bombarding the earth than we could ever use. Figuring out a way to utilize and harness it will be an art.

But it doesn't sell steaks in Texas.

If energy is neither created or destroyed, with all the windmills, solarpanels, and tidal energy systems aren't we going to use up all the earth's energy so the earth stops rotating?

As this becomes more feasible, the enviro whackos will start whining about disrupting the lifestyle of some fish or something.

Actually - windmills are propped up by tax credit credits... A giant feel good scam that do not work.

Keep the tax credits coming......I can buy more Porsche parts.

This is the view from my little spot on the Cumberland Basin which is at the very end of the Bay of Fundy. The bay has the highest tides in the world. There is a proposed tidal power station location not far from here. A wind farm is also to be built close by.
In the photo you can see Nova Scotia across the basin. The tide in the photo is not all the way out and when it is in it will cover the ice cakes in the foreground.
I have thought about building a cottage here and if I do I will consider trying to be off the grid as there is a constant stong breeze here.

Looks like a good place in which to operate a hovercraft (year round).

The effect of tidal energy capture by man on the rotation of the earth compared with the tidal effect of the moon on the earth's rotation is too small to even be considered. Better to worry about slowing down the planet Jupiter by using it to slingshot deep space probes. Harnassing energy that would otherwise be lost (tidal, geothermal, solar) makes a lot of sense.
