Deadliest Catch... Arizona style

It's that time of year here in Arizona. We practice a ritual that started when our daughter was a baby. After finding as many as 6-8 scorpions/week inside our house, we took the fight outside.

Every night or so we go out with the blacklight and the long tweezers. This is two nights worth... five scorpions. Four bark scorpions and some other type. It's interesting that the "other" scorpion is much more aggresssive than the bark scorpions - and they're the ones that do the most serious damage if they sting you. Now that we round them up outside we rarely find them inside.

For a long time our next door neighbors said they didn't have scorpions. I offered to check their backyard and found four! Now they've got their own black light.

THAT is among the very few advantages of living up in cold Scandinavia. The only animal hazard here are mad cows..

I just returned from Nevada, Arizona and California , it certainly is beautiful country and we did some incredible driving in Death Valley and around the Hoover dam. Luckily we didn't run into any of your "wild life"

We haven't had a problem with scorpions in CasaGrande but one year ticks were everywhere. In NC its snakes, ticks, fleas and the state bird(Moskito).

In SoCal, it's the fing liberals. Black light makes them look worse. I might try the cricket bait. Failing that, it's the .22 for sure.

fingpilot - extra i there bud... "try the cricket bat" - more correct, probably make you feel better about the whole process as well... not to mention stress reducing

We don't really have a cricket problem. Our neighbor does and they have their yard sprayed. Maybe they like the stuff? We do have a lot of cockroaches that come out at night. There are a couple in the jar with the scorpions. One of the scorps was holding on to a cockroach when we picked him up. Another one was stalking the big one so I added it to the mix. As of this morning the big cockroach was about 90% gone.

I was going to put down cockroach poison, but from what I read that can just force them inside the house. The article said if they're staying outside consider yourself lucky.

Better scorpions, rattlesnakes and earthquakes than shoveling snow, scraping windshields, slipping on ice and being sick half the year.

Sunny. Warm. Climates. Only.

No Scorpions or Snakes here in 4 years...Do have the Widows though. If the Crickets come in the house I just consider them good company.

A lot of people dont know this but we have Scorpions in Florida too - Its interesting how they shatter when you hit them with a shoe. Ours aren't that large though - hurts like a bee sting.

I got nailed in the armpit by a scorpion when I was about 10. I was laying on the carpet watching tv and it crawled up my shirt. When I felt an itch, I rubbed it and got nailed. My mom got stung between her toes and my sister on the ball of her ankle. It hurt a lot worse than a bee sting. We used to catch them and put them in the microwave for 15 sec.

for us anti-PETA types, after having a few 1000 cold ones on a nice 100 degree night at 11pm.................we take WD-40 and a lighter and VAPORIZE their little butts!

leaves a lovely outline just as if you had a scorpion tattooed onto your driveway! cheap thrills! lots of "what the hell is that?" kind of questions!

consult us for other non ethical, extreme pain, death inflicting methods for our furry/fuzzy/slithering lil critters of the night here in the DEZ!

Really? Assassin bugs will get people and animals? I've only noticed them in my area in the last couple of years and haven't had any problem with them getting my or the dogs. Maybe they've got enough other stuff to suck on besides us.

You got it

Plus the occasional tree frog that leaps on to my face when I leave the house

I love western Washington. I can go into the wilderness with total impunity, with no fear whatsoever of little crawly bitin' things. Nothing in the house, ever. It's great.

When we lived in Phoenix, we had the house and peremeter of home sprayed monthly. Exterminators offer monthly plans....Never had a problem and lived there for 10 years.

Homes backing to desert preserves get a lot more... and Ahwatukee is a known "hot spot" for scorpions. Hmmm... don't remember the realtor mentioning those features when we bought.
