Any iPod owner with dead batteries? There is an easy, inexpensive fix.

I just replaced the batteries on my daughters iPod mini which failed to hold a charge. Got the batteries off Ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=001&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&viewitem=&item=110112282081&rd=1&rd=1

Replaced them in about 10min. Full battery charge indicator and the battery is actually a 600mh compared to the original 400mh. And yes, the battery, like the original, is made in China.

Good to know. I've had an iPod for 4 months. I don't use it daily and when I do, it's for an hour or so. How long a life (total number of charges) do these things last?

I've had mine for over two years, and for the at least the last 9 months or so I have been using for an average of 1 to 2 hours a day. I probably still see about 6-8 hours of playback, depending on how much I play with it while I am listening.

Li-ion batteries last about 500 cycles, or about 1.5-2 years, if you charge everyday

I think Apple wants $67 to do the same thing. My Daughter would keep hers on an IHome when she wasn't using it around. I think the constant powering destroyed the life of the battery. I was pretty surprised how cheap the batteries are. I guess as long as they don't get hot and catch on fire!

I replaced the battery in my daughter's mini (very easy to do) and the battery in my 20 GB standard iPod (very tough to crack the case open, although it was easy to replace the battery once I got to that point).

The batteries and installation kits vary dependent on the iPod. I bought mine at the followinh website: http://www.kokopellimusic.us/?gclid=CPHz--LTzYsCFSBMGgodHlriHA

The price was reasonable and the delivery was pretty quick.

"The settlement covers owners of first, second or third-generation iPods who purchased their devices before May 31, 2004. For third-generation iPod owners, Apple is extending the one-year warranty for a second year. Third-generation iPod owners who submit a claim can either get their battery replaced for free or get a store credit for $50, that can be redeemed at the Apple Store online or at kiosks at brick-and-mortar Apple Store locations.

Consumers who bought a first or second-generation iPod who experienced a battery failure within two years of purchase can likewise get a $50 Apple Store credit, or a check payment of $25. And those first, second or third-generation iPod owners who paid for a battery replacement under Apple’s iPod Battery Replacement Program will be paid 50 percent of their costs, according to the agreement.

The claim deadline for this settlement is September 30, 2005 or two years after the original purchase date of the iPod, whichever is later."
