Mozilla Thunderbird "adaptive junk mail filter" = W-O-R-T-H-L-E-S-S

Maybe I've got it set up wrong or whatever, but I've had this thing turned "on" for about four months and have over a THOUSAND junk e-mails (mostly those stupid Viagra/Cialis spams) in there. More than enough information in terms of content for the filter to work with - so one would think anyway.

As of this morning, know how many junk e-mails the "filter" had caught? Zero. Nada.

What am I doing wrong? It's pretty brainless as far as configuration - just basically a check box to turn it on. Not that it seems to be doing a heck of a lot though. Given how great all the other Mozilla stuff is, I'm kind of surprised how lousy the spam filter appears to be.

Are they marked as junk or not marked at all?

Have you "Trained" the filter? It is, after all, adaptive and adapts to your personal opinion of what is junk. I have found the after about a week of tagging spam as junk, the junk mail filter works very well on new inbound messages.

Yea, when I get spam, I move it to the "junk" folder. Is there a step I'm missing to tag it as junk? AFAIK just moving it to the "junk" folder should tell it that the messages contained therein (opened or not) are actually junk, since I put them there. Is there something else I need to do to tag them?

No, you have to tag them as junk with the icon, they then automatically move to the junk folder. It's the column just after the sender.

That probably 'splains it then. I'll fiddle with it some more tonight. Thanks for the advice.
