Why are so many 3.6 Porsche xplant being sold?

I know I am not imagining, but I think for the last 3 weeks, I have seen Porsche owners with 3.6 transplant being sold.

Any clues as to why?

2-3 years ago, everyone wants to do a transplant. Now hardly anyone wants to do the xplant. Even MikeZ is selling!!!

I am just wondering!

Porsche hot rod fads are like any other car brand hot rod fads...styles come, styles go. Me? I'm wondering how long the fake 911R style tail light fad will last...it used to be so cool when only a few did it...now it seems to be standard procedure, like 3.6 transplants... everbody does it, then it's no longer cutting edge.

I noticed that too...just as I was considering doing one. That's NOT the reason I decided against it...just happened to notice.

My 3.2 is just fine, I live in LA, where am I going to use it anyway. Besides, I don't need another expense/liability. Oh, and I don't track the car.

Is there anything about a 3.6 conversion, that would make you get tired of it when you wouldn't get tired of the original 3.2?

Maybe the guys who do 3.6 conversions are the restless types, and after awhile they naturally move on the the next new thing. While those who stick with the 3.2s are the contented sort.

One benefit I eventually hope to collect from moving north is that I can now do almost whatever to the 911's motor, so long as it still passes tailpipe and has a cat. I'm thinking of a 3.8, six stacks, crankfire, etc. The 911 no longer has to sit in CA traffic so it can be less civil. Then again, I don't even have time to drive it anymore. Sucks.

I am just wondering if after conversion, there exist issues such as:

1. Maintenance.
2. Chassis/engine compatibility.
3. Weight.
4. etc.

I am hoping that these 4+ sellers would chime in and share their personal experiences.

I think the biggest problem is the inherent design and 30 plus year old suspension and upgrading a car to a 3.6 and having it handle and behave compared to cars today. Sure the car will be light and fast, but also even more so tail happy at the limits. Limits that will be pushed even further with the added power. I'm not knocking 911's. Mine has a 3.4 twin plugged engine that puts out even more power then your basic 3.6. I think a Boxter S with its superior weight layout and suspension would be a good car to compare it to. They are much easier to drive hard.

Because 996s are getting stupid cheap. At least that's my theory.

I'm going retro.....IF my SC sells I'll be playing in the pool with the 356 crowd. If it doesn't I'll keep it.

I put it in the garage for a week or more and then take it out I again realize how much of an awesome ride it is.

The reason I am selling...again..if it sells....is that my vision isn't what it used to be due to depth perception issues after Lasik and I can't use it to it's fullest capabilities on the track, DE or AX.....

I build or modify 1-3 cars a year. The SC just happens to be one that I have kept the longest and put the most effort into. I'm NOT bored with it, I'm just ready to move to a different phase in my Porsche ownership.

New cars suck....

3.6 conversions, in many cases, render a 911 more suitable to racing hot-rod Cameros than other 911's. Not all, mind you, but there is a lot of other work required to keep them well-balanced that does not always get done.

Interesting, I've been tempted to sell mine. My car has evolved into a full-on track car, and while it's very streetable and as fast as all get-out, I hardly ever drive it.

Also, POC (or is it PRC?) has a new racing class specifically for 3.6L converted cars.

Pretty much why I decided not to swap mine. I can get into enough trouble the way it is but I may re-gear the trans when it needs a rebuild for more lower end torque. I don't need to go 120 but it would be nice to have the torque between say, 20 and 70.

I think that you are imagining things, there are lots of cars for sale every day, most you never notice.
A properly done car is a ball, but even a stock 911 isn't the best daily driver out there.

+1

2 years ago there were very few 3.6 around so even fewer came up for sale.

Now as it became easier to do a swap they are more common and so you see more for sale.
