Geez......I don't even want to think that way, but I'm looking at what SC targas are going for, even in great condition. Solid 3.0, fuchs, 915 gear box, targa top.....it adds up.
It would make me sick parting the car, but if I can't sell it for close to what I paid for it......... ![]() |

Counting just dollars, absolutely, you could get probably double if you carefully parted it out and marketed all of the parts on places like eBay to get top dollar for each little part.
That's a lot of parts. But that's also a lot of eBay auctions, disassembly, dealing with flaky buyers, actually collecting the money, cleaning, packing, shipping, storing a non-running and immovable partial car, etc. etc. etc. What do you think the car will fetch as a whole? Some rough and very conservative parts numbers: Engine: $5000 Trans: $1000 Interior $1000 total Wheels:$500 Doors: $300 Front suspension: $500 Chassis: $1000 That's roughly $10K for the major parts. |

i recently broke up a 3.2 coupe
some parts just are not in hot demand others were not usable the engine parts were all in perfect shape it had 7's and 8's fuchs 915 with oil cooler sports muffler leather seats in primo condition fetched about 10 grand , euro's for it still have some crumbs left, but nothing major i wouldn't assume that you can translate the exchange rate towards fetching the same as i did , exchanged to dollars parts that cost 10 euro here, usually cost 10 dollars where you are ... at least that's what i would base my calculation on, since it's on the safe side, never aim to high with part out, cause it's a lot of work dealing with all the shipments, and everybody want's a bargain deal SC's or 3.2's are not early 911's, there are plenty of parts in the market...

I'm trying to sell a 78SC coupe with high mileage. Based on the response so far, I may end up parting out the car, as well.

SCs are getting pretty old, and it seems are getting a lot of price pressure from Carreras, particularly the pre-87 Carreras.
The G50s seem to be doing a bit better, because they are for many potential buyers not in competition with the 964, so the 964 doesn't put as much price pressure on them. Higher mileage SCs do seem to be a tough sell these days. But unless you want the major hassle of parting out a car, I think I'd just price it and sell it. Once you get below $10K, you have a completely different market and pool of buyers. It doesn't necessarily make sense, but you can price it at $12.9 and get no calls, but price it at $9.9 and sell it in a day. |

Sadly, all cars are worth more in parts than as a running machine. I've never been comfortable with that fact, but it has always been true.

I parted out my 245K 84 Targa with a 103K motor and came out about $15K when I delivered the shell a year after I started. Had $20K into the car total with an excellent suspension upgrade/refresh and repaint, but was parking lot tapped here and there.
Taking a car apart is not difficult. What's time consuming is boxing and shipping. If I could have gotten $12K for the car, I'd have taken it given everything. Problem was no one was going to give me that. ![]() It's a good time of year to sell a targa. unless you are in a hurry, eBay, Craig's List, AutoTrader.com, Pelican...someone is bound to come along in the next 2-3 months who will appreciate your and John Walker's care. What would you like to get for it?

I don't see why you can't get that if it's a nice, well-kept car. I know someone who bought an "$8500" SC for $13K and then dumped $12K into it.
$11K+ seems like a good price for a strong, no-issues SC targa

I looked at this car awhile back when I was hunting for my '85. It's a nice car, but wasn't "mine" so to speak.
![]() HDD, you should know that many (almost all, actually) of the cars I looked at during my search are still on the market, two months after I bought mine, and after seriously looking for over a month....and a couple months of "so-so" looking. Someone will buy it.

I agree with some of the other comments on the SC vs. Carrera. The 84-86 Carrera prices have dropped enough that I think they are squeezing the SC's out of the market. Hell my '86 has a completely rebuilt engine with upgrades, and fully rebuilt suspension, paint and interior in good shape and I would be amazed if I could get much more than $14K in this market.
