2 questions about "Big Bang"

I understand the Big Bang to be the most (don't get hung up on "most" if it bothers you) prevalent theory for the origin of the universe, then
1) where did the "chunk" of matter come from that expanded after the bang?
2) what set off the "bang" which is attributed to the subsequent expansion?
I don't know why I'm even going to bother to say this, but...let's try to keep this on topic.

I have heard the "chunk" was Russian and the "bang" attributed to someone pushing the wrong button.

Anyone with a theory that prove otherwise, please let me know.

It all started with the airbox on a CIS equipped 911, Bill.

one theory is that the original 'chunk' originated as a 'virtual particle' from yet 'another universe'. it was infinitely hot, infinitely condensed and expanded rapidly - initially faster than the speed of light, accounting for why there are parts of our universe where light hasn't had time to reach. as the expansion rate slowed, matter began to condense, initially as hydrogen, next helium..then more elements. they began to combine and form giant stars. the giant stars were so great in size that they collapsed under the 'weight' of their own density (faster than they could grow outward). once they collapse, they leave a black hole and throw chunks of matter out once again, forming new stars and planetoids. at some point, a smaller star - one which was more stable (billions rather than millions of years) - formed and a number of planets formed around it. you live on one of those. gradually, an atmosphere formed and 'life' began from more complex aggregates of elements in the sea until something walked out of it onto land. 'it' evolved into a land mammal and eventually you came along.. or something like that..

Bigchillcar explained it pretty well. I also think dark matter is partly what slowed down the expansion. We can't see it, but its effect can be measured. What really blows my mind is how many of the stars we can see at night actually burned out long ago, but whose light is just now reaching us. And people still think the Earth is 6500 yrs. old.

And if you really want to know how small and insignificant we are, check this out:

People believe the world is 6500 years old? Any idiot who's done the match can tell it's much closer to 7,500.

String theory is creating more questions than it's solving. The deeper we dig, the deeper the hole gets, it seems.

How bout this one....We know Human exist in 4 Dimensions...Height, Width, Depth and Time. Why isn't it possible that Humans exist in more Dimensions then we are aware of, perhaps our physical beings keep us from being aware of that existance.

Stephen Hawking talks about plenty more than four dimensions in "Black Holes and Baby Universes".

Oh, oh I have a distinct notion were this thread is heading. Science vs Religion in another dreary twelve page shoot out.

Let's all have another hit of acid so we can really dig into this.

Right. Those two simple questions solved.

Next question: What´s beyond the Universe ?

Trying to dig into such concepts really highlights how utterly insignificant my own person is. I make less difference than a retired, blind, Alzheimer struck ant in a gigantic anthill. I am not sure I make more sense either.
