Interesting about the T-Mobile WiFi Hotspot phone. I would go for something like that. Ditch my Vonage account, and just use a cell phone. I remember one of the old analog cellular companies had something like that... but it used a cordless phone type base station to connect to a regular phone line.

I could have used something like that when I was in my previous apartment - I got HORRIBLE cell reception there... which is WHY I went with Vonage for a home phone.

Latest Rumor Update

At 8:16 PM, EDT, a user on Howard Forums reports knowledge that late today Apple has signed a licensing agreement with MS today for ActiveSync on the iPhone. This will allow the phone to participate in the Push Email game. If true -this is a rumor as of now- the phone suddenly has to the potential to replace the Blackberry as the corporate status symbol. This would be a huge win for both Apple and MS. This almost makes too much sense to be true.

Unfortunately that also means that the inventory already in stock will have to be flashed with a new ROM to work. That probably won't happen before Friday.

At $500 it's pricey, but I understand one Nokia model costs $795. Wow. Can the thousand dollar cell phone be too far behind? I'll name it, "iGIVEUP".

AT&T's long-term strategy must be sound. But it's a risky move on Jobs' part -- AT&T's sub-par (for now) network could turn a significant number of early adopters off the device until the network catches up with it, but by then there could be too many rival devices for an iPod-like share of the market.

The iPhone is arguably the best product that Apple has ever produced. It would be incredibly ironic if arrogance ended up preventing it from revolutionising the way in which we entertain ourselves and communicate with others.

Jobs says he can sell 10M iPhones

10M * 600 = $6B

AT&T locks you into a 2 year contract @ ~$100/month or ~$1000/yr

10M * $1000 * 2 = $20B

Who is the really big winner here, if Jobs is correct?

Well the big winner is the Apple fan.

See, by buying an Apple product they will be part of the counter-culture . . . not part of that other culture of supporting big evil corporations.

So WHat if they max out their credit card, and are locked in to a two year money extraction plan?. . they get to stick it to the man.

oh, wait ....

Interesting new article from the WSJ... their personal tech writer had the chance to put it through its paces for 2 weeks.

Sounds promising to me.

... 146,000 iphones going into service, in the first few days. The article doesn't say how many were bought (but not activated) by ebayer types.

Apple should do well too... rumor is that they get $200+ for each activation and between $3 and $9 per month from AT&T. Multiply that by 10 million and they will get a nice boost too.

Wow, Apple snags another $200+ above the selling price!?

That kinda paints Steve Jobs as one seriously greedy guy.

10M * 800 = $8B

. ...billion . . .. with a "B."

I don't think that Bush's Oil Buddies would have him.

Nearly 1.4 million iPhones sold to date. iPhone is reportedly the 4th best selling cell phone in the U.S. Introductions in Europe and Asia are coming up.

I guess 'doomed' was a bit pessimistic.

Some Enron accounting going on over in Cupertino...apparently 18% of the iPhones sold were never activated?

http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/articles/djf500/200710231246DOWJONESDJONLINE000592_FORTUNE5.htm

The San Antonio telecommunications giant reported a net wireless subscriber addition of two million - more than half of which signed long-term contracts - to bring its total base to 65.7 million. It also reported activating 1.1 million Apple Inc. (AAPL) iPhones since its launch in late June.

(...)

AT&T has an exclusive deal with Apple to provide cellphone service for the iPhone in the U.S. Apple said late Monday it sold more than 1.1 million iPhones in the latest quarter, putting total sales at 1.4 million since the product's launch.

Those would most likely be people who bought hoping/waiting for the sim unlock.

Last time I checked, a month ago, it was working in 90+ countries and nearly 50 carriers other than AT&T.
