The widget works!!
A couple of days ago I bought a 6 pack of Guinness Ale, I felt it would go good with the steaks and twice baked potatoes I got from the market.
When I opened the first bottle and poured it out, I was sure I had a defective bottle. Something was rattling around inside after the pour. I read the side and it only says there is a widget inside to help give that fresh from the tap taste. So I am sitting a bar and grill this evening grabbing a bite to eat and notice they have Guinness on tap. You know what I ordered. I ask the bartender if he knows what is up with the widget. He says it releases nitrogen into the beer when you pop the top so it charges the beer the same way it come out of the tap. So when I get home I pop a bottle with my ear next to the neck. He is right, right after I pop the top you hear the widget releasing the nitrogen into the beer. Very cool!! Just thought I would share.

Actually the widget isn't that hi-tech. I did some consulting work for Guiness several years ago and asked them about the widget, being a die-hard Guiness man m'self... (I have a t-shirt signed by Fogel the brewmeister)... The widget is a hollow device with a VERY small hole in it. When bottled, some beer and pressure is forced into the widget though this hole. When you open the bottle or can, the pressure differential allows that pressure inside the widget to escape. The stuff escaping from such a small hole makes the very fine foam head. Now the hi-tech part? They told me the little hole is made by a laser. I never figured out if they were pulling my leg on that one, I think they were serious. Long live the Guiness!

The only problem with the widget, is you have to drink Guiness to try it out......

I guess I am a little behind the times. I had no idea they had addressed the issue. I never said it was high tech, I just thought it was cool. I drank a couple of drafts last night in the bar and grill and came home and popped on open and the quality was virtually the same. Sometimes, little things if life get me excited.

Yeah, I actually prefer the Extra Stout. It's got no widget.
