I like to think that the bad Asian drivers we have here learned to drive in their home land. I am not sure how many of you have been to Asia, but out of the countries I have been to (Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea, and mainland China), Chinese are by far the worst. I was completely appalled by the lack of courtesy the drivers have in the metropolitan areas. If somebody wants to change lanes and there is someone next to them, they just honk and turn right into them expecting the other person to hit their brakes... I **** you not. The scooters are also suicidal and will cut right in front of your car as you are turning etc. There is also practically no traffic control, which makes the roads essentially every man for himself (whether it is running read lights or turning right into someone). So is it a stereotype that they are bad drivers? I don't think so, by our standards at least. I believe they just have a different style of driving, which by American standards is rude, dangerous and "bad". Would I prefer to drive in a car with someone from China or America? America any day...

I think Rob is back pedaling and he's not smart enough to do it well enough...I don't see any tongue and cheek in his posts.
|
Becides, we all know its OLD folks who drive bad.

".....a white Corolla(Ithink a Corolla) came from the right turning right...."
So, what do you have against white Corollas? Sherwood |
Souk,
I apologized..You took this way too personal. Again, as a reasonable man... I take it back... Bob :) |
Re: Asian Drivers WTF? Are They Thinking?

I know for a fact that you are wrong. I know alot of middle aged Asian women that are neither well educated nor diciplined. My sample size is statistically significant on this one to make a scientific call. ;) BTW Nothing wrong with being Right Wing or Conservative, no need to apologize there. This is a free country and I will defend your right to have your opinion. BTW I think our host's wife is a middle aged Asian woman that used to drive a BMW. Wonder if she might want to chime in on this. |

Rob, if I and/or some other Asians was in a room of people, the first room you walked into where you could vent...you probably would not have made the statements you made. Yet, you felt it was fine to post it on a public forum where you can hide behind a screen and keyboard. Now, you've apoloized and expect that folks will have sympathy for you or allow you a free pass. That might work for some folks, but "I'm sorry" gets used too often these days, and it carries little weight with me...and perhaps a lot of self respecting members of this forum.
I've nothing against conservatives or liberals. I could care less what what side of the issue someone is on, and I could care less how old someone is. The internet is too often used by folks to dump their mental trash, then they think they can clean it up with a few key strokes. |

but of course you won't catch any **** for this here because there are not likely many black women under 30 who are Pelicans. the initial post was way out of whack and very 'knee jerk' in the way it was written. but i don't doubt that if i lived in his area i'd eventually find myself wondering if poor driving was typical of asian women or if the poor driving i was witnessing was just typical percentages applied to the local population which may be heavily asian. nothing wrong with this. |
I take racial stereotypes "personally." Sorry Robert, I don't think you're consciously a racist. But frankly I think you lack empathy and really don't understand other cultures or what people have been through. You make statements that you proudly proclaim are "not PC" and that it is all based in fact, and we should lighten up. But then I make a comment about 930 owners and it becomes "personal"?
Anyone who knows me realized the angle of my post (tongue in cheek, and to illustrate a point). Sadly, many here also realized the point of yours, which while you believe it to be "not racist", evidently others see something different. |
Souk,
I would tell that to your face, and then ask what we can do as reasonable people to correct it. I like Asians, why do you keep insisting that I don't. I would probably like you, You could teach me some great driving techniques and I can offer to help you design and build an airplane. Isn't that diversity at its best. Again, My objective was not to alienate pelicanites. :) |
Our heritage is an "accident of birth" We have no control over our race and country or continent of birth and, in the main, no control over the culture in which we are raised.
It would do us all a bit of good to remember this before making generalities. |
right.

Oh for god sake....
YES, many asian women AND men who learned to drive abroad are poor drivers. Note that 'asian' would include Indians as well. There is nothing wrong with stating this FACT. Anyone who has traveled in Asian knows why. Driving in many developing asian countrys is a madhouse. There is not drivers training, and virtually zero traffic enforcement to speak of. Racist? Come on guys..... Blacks are great athletes. Am I a racist? |
I wanted to jump in here just to irritate Nostatic, but it looks like that was done well before I stumbled upon this one. That said, even the bleeding hearts here know there is a grain of truth in most stereotypes. Deny it all you want.
|
Yup. It's true......
and each stereotype has others it likes to stereotype. I wonder if there is a scientific term for this? |

We just breezed through it, everyone sort of diving this way and that going around each other. Only scary part on the entire trip was the 2 lane road to Bangalore. the oncoming buses passing trucks have a serious death wish...for you! Can't wait to go back in September. |
Slakjaw, you are wrong, bad drivers drive badly.
Counter point to the poor driving in Asia. I was travelling all week in China with a couple of my collegues, both white males. One is a motorcycle race instructor. They made some interesting comments about drivers in China. They actually thought that people there drive with great precision and are very very aware when they are driving. While they might not be courteous, they actually pay attention while driving and do not get road raged. I do not complete agree but there is some truth there. I would have a hard time driving a block without hitting someone ;) |
