Hey nostatic, this thread brings a tear to my eye. I think most of you are missing what hes really trying to say. This woman did not hold a U.S. drivers license. Ive seen this before. Asian's often like to stop at the entrance to the freeway and wait for all traffic to clear....... This verbatim causes two scenarios. #1 the accordion affect. #2 a missive pile up. I've seen both. I think the only thing easier than entering this country is getting a drivers license.

Everyone knows it's female Chinese chemistry grad students driving chalky White Corollas.

Hey, anyone notice the truely worst drivers are old white men under hats? I think they either like the sound of a seatbelt dragging on the pavement, or just think the door jam is a handy place to store an unused seatbelt.

Oh, wait . . was that not PC? ...seatbelts should always be worn. (better?)

A few weeks ago, the lady and I were on I-66 on a Sunday morning, which is often just as much a parking lot as on a Monday morning. This time it was a total parking lot. A Korean lady was standing in front of her minivan on the left shoulder, flagging cars down and no one was stopping for her. So I pulled over, walked toward her and yelled, "Do you need any help?" She waved me off. So I got back in my car. She was actually trying to stop traffic to let her husband pull back onto the travel lane. Now I won't stop for anyone but Porsches and motorcycles.

Since reading this thread, I decided to do my own survey of bad drivers I encounter on my bicycle commute to the office...

Monday afternoon- Red Subaru, White woman, almost runs over 2 bikers at an intersection turning right.
Tuesday morning- Silver Olds, white male with goofy gotee, turns left and almost runs me over, I am in the bike lane.
Tuesday afternoon- Black Ford, white male in tie, turns right without looking, almost takes me out, I am in the bike lane.
This afternoon- Green truck with trailer, white male decides to gun his truck right in front of me turning right so he could cut off the on coming car.

I do not ride fast, weather is fine, broad daylight in a highly used bike path. There is no shortage of Middle Aged Asian women where I commute. Does this mean that all white people are bad drivers?

Nope, I certianly do not think so, I would be an ignorant fool to make that stupid of a conclusion.

island911 07-19-2007 07:05 PM

Don't even get me started about Asians on bicycles. ;)

Rick Lee 07-19-2007 07:07 PM

Yeah, when I was in China, the only time I ever got hit by a bicycle, it was by a Chinese dude. Big surprise, eh?

alf 07-19-2007 07:17 PM

Rick, Island...I must add that I was not riding blind folded by a piece of dental floss :)

For the 4 bad drivers, there were 100s more good ones of all races, gender and car makes.

We should all do our own little one week survey and notice the make of car, gender and race of bad drivers we encounter on the road.

island911 07-19-2007 07:20 PM

Exactly! Who have the most bicycle accidents? huh? huh? ;)

Old people, yes, they rank way up there:eek: How many have run into crowds, driven off boat ramps, ect. On another board, someone took a count of how many single car accidents involved those over the age of 65, WOW you couldn't make up the stuff that showed up:eek:

Nope, no 7/11s. We miss out on the friendly Indian purveyors of the mighty slurpie. Hey look, another stereotype!

Are you sure that the problem isn't you? I see a lot of bicycle commuters riding like twats, trying to "assert themselves" against other vehicle traffic. I always want to blow the horn so close to them that they schit in their spandex pants, but of course I don't. (I'm actually pretty courteous on the road).

I apologize if I'm way off-base, but I never have any problems riding my bike on city streets. Even in NYC and L.A.

P.S.: I triple-dog-dare you to ride your bike around my neighborhood in L.A. sometime. You really have to be careful. People drive with their eyes closed and their thumbs up their ass. L.A. drivers in general are OK, though.

alf 07-19-2007 08:03 PM

Speeder,
I have not been back on the bike for long so, it might very well be me :) Maybe my sense of space is not adjusted to a bicycle yet. Red Subaru and Green Truck were definately either clueless or reckless.

I do not wear spendex.

MotoSook 07-19-2007 08:06 PM

Alfred, you just aren't coordinated enough to ride a bike, or drive or anything besides doing math and science home work. It's an Asian trait...didn't you know? Geez! You must be stupid as the white man.

It's rarely the cyclists fault, at least here in Boston. I used to do well over 150 city miles a week for 5 years, and 99% of the time, it's the driver. And now I watch cyclists and drivers, and it's rare that cyclists aren't in line, but with everyone on a cell phone, it's always hte driver that's the dick. And knowing the little I do about Alf based on his posts, I'd say he's a good cyclist in terms of road manners.

Some of my own experiences:
1. Woke up in a pool of blood. Pinnarello demolished. To this day I have no idea what happened. 21 stitches over left eye.

2. Guy runs a red light, but not just any red light: crosses first perpendicular 2 lanes, then crosses T (train) tracks, then enters my 2 lanes. I'm going 25+ down a hill, I see him, he sees me, the light has been red since he entered his first two lanes, my light has been green for 5 seconds. I'm thinking there's no way this guy is going to go, he hesitates, I keep going, but then he tries to make it through my 2 lanes, I broadside him and land 20 feet away. Ciocc demolished.

3. I'm wearing a super bright race jersey just tooling along. Guy sideswipes me, pushing me into parked cars. Doesn't even notice. Catch him at a light. He's eating KFC while driving.

and the list goes on.

LOL! Lu made it to her office and back on her bike early this evening. No carnage to her or others. She somehow must've developed some white genes from being married to me. :p

Sir, you are correct, just this past weekend there was a ride to honor a rider who was run down last year because someone wasn't paying attention, a few years back, someone plowed through a group of 20+ riders on a country road, early Sunday morning, ONCOMING:eek: I myself have been run off the road more than once, bled from beer bottles being thrown at me (still have the scars too:( ) so I'm with Shaun on this (btw, I have the H1 in the burb, just need to take the pix Shaun) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1184903439.jpg

Denis, cyclists have just as much right on the street as cars do, and have to 'assert' their right in the lane they are in to avoid being plowed over by a driver who thinks cars are the only ones allowed on the road. Do not think for a second any cyclist wants to ride on the gap between parked cars, where a door can open at any second, and the lane next to it where a car can 'assert' itself and push the cyclist into a parked car.

speeder 07-19-2007 10:01 PM

I understand that cyclists have a right to use the road, but common sense would dictate that you do not "assert" your place in the road when it means holding a car or truck to 10 mph on a 40 mph road.

I should add that I go WAY out of my way not to pass bicycles closely or harass them or make them feel unsafe in any way. If anything, I worry about their safety every time I see one on the street w/ cars. I'm in Mpls. right now and it is a heavy bike commuter town, so it's an everyday issue. People in cars are not paying attention to bicyclists generally speaking, and there is no ethnic component to this equation.
