Has there ever been a recorded successful suicide by slitting wrists?
Just saw a thing on actor Owen Wilson, who slit his wrists and took a bunch of pills in an apparent "attempt" to kill himself.
How come every time you hear a story about someone slitting their wrists, they never actually die? In theory, it seems like it should be effective. But in practice, never seems to work. Why? And has any famous person ever actually pulled it off? |

There's a way to do it for attention (across the blood vessels) that is repairable, and the serious way (along the blood vessels) that's for keeps.

Many suicide attempts are cries for help and are not intended to kill.
This is a good info page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide_methods and it actually supports your doubts that slitting wrists is effective. The fact that it can take many hours makes it likely that the person is found in time for help. George |

Remember, it's "down the road" not "across the street".

I think he just became uninsurable with most studios. The major insurance companies, notably Fireman's Fund, which is very big in the industry won't insure productions with a certain crazy young actress. And she became uninsurable because she'd call in sick after a night of partying. The production financial loses for one day can run hundreds of thousands of dollar.

So, you wanna tell me why I piss you off so much? Ohhh, how clever of you to ignore my question while not so subtly slamming the topics posted by others...

Cant believe that Owen Wilson would do that...he always came across as a laid back kind
of guy... I just saw one of his movies yesterday, the Big Bounce... not very good flick... anyway he seemed like one of the last people that would try this...but we all do have our dark sides. An old college roommate / guy I wrote some music with, tried the slit wrist method and then locked himself in the bathroom... his girlfriend called the fire dept and they broke the door down. He is still around, I suppose with scars on his wrists. If I ever off myself, its going to be in the 993 driving off a cliff somewhere...maybe Mexico. jk ![]() |

by the way, looking at Owen Wilson's career earnings...the guy was getting about $10-15 mil
per film and had earnings of over $50 million in his career. Guess money doesnt buy happiness.. but damn, with that kind of money you'd think that a guy could just go escape somewhere and get away on an island just to chill and enjoy the sun.... |

Saw a clip of that guy on...Jon Stewart, I think. Wilson was so STONED out of his MIND he couldn't even sit up straight.
Seems like the standard Hollyweird meltdown pattern, IMHO. A former neighbor of mine dove out of a moving car in traffic. That's not a cry for help...that's a hard-core way to go. Her next-door neighbor slashed his wrists in the bathtub and shot himself twice in the chest, to be found by his 12-year-old daughter when she got home from school. Must've been something in the water in NJ. |

You are absolutely right Wayne. As an actor, one would think that his
salvation could be found in creating his art... acting...writing...producing... directing...whatever. Most of the great ones, that have staying power end up going that route, in part because it helps them sort things out. perhaps for whatever reason Owen Wilson didnt have anything to really look forward too, to be working on or to accomplish. Perhaps it has become all too stale for him despite the fact that he is usually in a few popular films every year. So, yeah I generalized about the money angle...but if he was smart he could use that money to generate something creative for his life...some outlet to get him going in a new direction...perhaps producing and directing a film like his brother Luke just did ..... or fall in love with something other than a Hollywood starlet.. get back to reality. The money really is just a tool anyway...whether it be to lay on a beach and forget for awhile, or to use as a vehicle to help one reconstruct the life and give it new meaningful direction. |

My guess is it's about a woman. Men do really stupid stuff over women
![]() I have a nurse friend who drug a Rice student who tried to kill himself out of his hospital bed, down to the cancer ward, and said, "Look you little egghead, these people have real problems. You loosing your little egghead girlfriend is not a "real" problem. Get over it." It was harsh, but I think he got the point.

Owen Wilson has to listen to himself whine all day. I would have to commit suicide too....plus the studios probably made him go to all of his premieres and watch those terrible films he made.....
