Porsche wave, WTF?!

OK, I know this isn't very technical, but I was sitting at a red light in my 996 this AM when an early 911/912 made a right turn and passed right by my open window. I nodded hello, and what did this little turd-man do? He gave me a disdainful look!! Son-of-a-biotch!

If you're out there reading this, you know who you are: green early car w/ a small, penis-challenged driver...

God, that got my goat.

Haha I have a 997 and a 1966 and its a world of differnce driving it. In the 66 everybody wants to wave to you and will nearly run you off the road doing it. In the 997 only 996 and 997 drivers will waive. Sometimes 993's. I personally don't always catch the waves so I feel bad about it. The early car guys don't like the later stuff because they feel like anybody can buy one of those but having a nice early car is a love, a passion and most importantly a sign of Porsche know how. Don't fret, your 996 would blow any early 911 away!

It is possible that if he was older, that look on his face was more of a "who is that, do I know him?" look. My dad and my 2yo nephew have that look sometimes. I doubt anyone would be disdainful to someone waving hello. Maybe he realized 996's say hello now and he will start saying hi too.

I don't always get the wave from 996 or 997's when I am in my older cars, and never get them from boxters. We'll see about the Caymans.

I recently had a boxster owner wave at me in my 911 ... actually, the first time I noticed anyone waving at me at all. I waved back (late though)...I didn't know Porsche folks had this Jeep-like wave thing. Not too many Porsches here in SE Michigan, so it rarely comes up....

I'm sorry, but I can't help think about this post and think that everyone ought to get a wave, no matter what model they drive.

1- '79-98 911's get an enthusiastic wave
2- '74-78 911's get a wave of sympathy
3- Boxsters get a wave only if they wave first
4- Cayenne owners get a hostile stare or middle finger
5- '99-05 911's - see Boxster
6- Pre '73 911's get a wave and salute
7- 356's- see pre '73
8- 914's get a nod
9- 924, 928,944,968 get eye contact
10- "special" Porsches (anything not covered previously)
Use your best judgement

These are meant to be a few simple rules- not the Ten Commandments. Be careful out there!

Why differentiate between '78 and '79?

Why get tweaked when a stranger doesn't wave...maybe it's just me, but it doesn't affect your life one way or the other, so why worry?

Maybe he was on his way to the hospital after getting a distressing report and wasn't really looking at you. Or, maybe he was constipated.

Funny...just the opposite for me. While driving my old car home from her final USA service? I got 2 thumbs up from other P-car drivers. First, a silver Boxster driver, also trapped in heavy Beaverton Oregon traffic. Second, a silver 996 twin turbo driver. Both rolled down windows, stuck arms out to give me a thumbs up. I couldn't help but wonder "why now?"...since I knew it would be my last time to drive this car:

The wave is pretty much dead. I gave up waving to 996 and up. If they wave I will gladly reciprocate. I do give extra efforts to 924's, 944's and 914's - I remember how bad I was dissed when I had my 914 back in the day.

I wave at anyone in another Porsche as long as I see them. I will give a nod to most any other sports car if I pull along side and usually get an acknowledgement. I have found that Cayenne's don't wave back much, but maybe it's just that they don't notice me from up there. If anyone knows a guy with a sliver boxster with the license plate "BUTZI" I got great amusement from the raised arm, third reich style salute I got back from him.

You guys are funny, and maybe I'm not as funny as I thought I was since almost nobody got the invisible wink in my post. Yes, the guy did not acknowledge me but I did not really get upset about it. I just thought that it made an amusing story.

Intersting thing here in Mpls., MN.; they have one of the highest MC per capita populations anywhere and yet every single bike that is coming down the road gives you a nod or wave when you are riding, no matter what brand you or they are on.

It's really friendly, but it took some getting use to. Like being in a new culture. I'm having a great time here this summer, maybe the old coot in the early car could not see all the way over to me. I was a good 10 feet away.

Wayne, on a side note, you keep saying the clone is faster than your 996. I'm curious what you've done with the clone (I just can't remember) to make it that fast - or is it possible you bought a total dog of a 996?

Paul, if I'd ever seen your car driving down the road, I would have waved, ogled, turned around to look some more, then hit a tree.

Sounds like you had the reverse experience of what is usually the case. Like we have debated several times before, the vintage owners (normally) are the more passionate guys with a more expressed sense of fellowship. We have previously argued that the newer (98+) cars are often purchased by wealthy people that want a cool car but does not have any real Porsche passion.

Maybe this guy in the older car had had too many experiences with guys in newer cars not returning his wave - thinking they are all posh turds and snobs. He thought it was time for payback, not knowing he actually met up with one the most dedicated Porsche guys on the block - disguised in a 996..
