RANT: Sick of idiots on the road!!!

This is really a pointless rant other than just getting it of my chest.

Yesterday was my birthday. My parents offered to watch the kids so my wife and I could go out. So, after dropping them of we jumped into the 911 and went cruising through the back roads in our township. It was really nice. With a three year old and a 2 month old we have not had a chance to spend much time alone recently.
This car pulls up behind us. Starts to rev its engine, turns his lights off and on...you get the idea. Fine, I just get going. He is riding my bumper. I just keep going. After the next stop sign, I take of a bit fast. Nothing crazy, but I get up to speed limit (55 mph). There is a SUV in front of me doing about the same. I maintain a good distance. The idiot behind me passes doing about a 100. Passes the SUV and barely misses the car coming in the other direction. His passenger (another idiot) learns out of his window and mouths "oh yeah" with his thumb pointing toward him as they pass. So these 2 fools, not only risked killing themselves but also risked my wife and I and the people in the SUV in front of us and the whom ever was in the car in the oncoming lane. I am sure they recounted their story of how they blew away a porsche to anyone who would listen. I wish I had got the plates, but as they were passing I was braking to avoid the potential accident. My focus was elsewhere.

So, in case you are wondering what "blew away" my 911. It was a chevy cavaliar with -count them 2 racing stripes and one of those noisy mufflers.

There...that feels a little better. Thanks for listening

Mike

In car video. I have it recording everywhere I drive.
Archos makes a good little recorder.

I just got the Archos 404 camcorder version - and in car video was one of the reasons why - track day video and idiot capture. I wish someone would bring out a 4 way setup which automatically recorded every trip - front, back, left, right. I'd buy it in a snap - just to get the tailgaters.

A beat up Civic just had to pass me in my Cab last weekend, the car was blowing so much white smoke I swear my shirt smelled of oil when I got home.

Do they actually think they have accomplished something by passing a Porsche on the highway?

I like to make a point of going slower in situations like this. Just make it really obvious that you're not playing. Try to be as slow as you can away from the lights, cruise carefully up to the speed limit and stay there, follow the car in front 10 yards back, if they sit on your arse move as far over as you can to give them room to pass, etc.
Sure, they'll pass you as soon as they can but so what? Let them go and give them their moment of 'glory', not everyone can overtake a 20 year old car.

Last person to cut me off, in blissful ignorance, was a mommy driving an Explorer, talking on her cell phone. And smoking. And I assume she had a latte or a diet coke in the cupholder for her 'spare moments'.

Happy Birthday, Mike!!!

I had a similar situation this weekend while out in Bay City with the 911. A couple of a$$clowns in a DIESEL Chevy pickup were next to me on a divided highway, speed limit of 35. In my car, you are basically at wheel level to most trucks as well as the lovely disel sounds those motors make. i could hear the driver revving up the engine and "jumping " ahead. I just ignored them. I have been doing what Aerkuld suggested, driving slower and giving them room to pass. I just don't need the aggravation anymore.

Same day, different road. Two lane highway, 55 MPH limit. I notice the Intrigue coming up on the cars behind and passing them. I just watch until "Jr Paris Freakin' Hilton" gets to my bumper. I have a minivan in front of me and we are doing roughly 60MPH with about two cars between us. This girl behind me keeps poking out into the other lane to check traffic so I keep to the right of my lane so she can see around. She finally takes a chance and roars off around both me and the van. I slowed down as I couldn't see if it was clear and wanted a path , just in case.

While nothing happened this time, I envisioned her coming up to the next intersection, known for fatal accidents and crashing. I imagine her Dad having to see his little girl in a bad way. I started to tear up thinking about it. My little girl is just 1 but she will HAVE to drive someday.I just hope that she is not that girl someday.

I have idiots on the road around me most days. I really try hard to not let them bother me anymore.

I was coming home from Homedepot with a few 2x4s on my roof racks. I normally drive fairly conservatively in these situations and try to keep distance between the car in front and back of me. A Cavalier decided to ride my bumper so i tapped the brakes. The Cav proceeded to lock his brakes up, I figured this was the end but not 30 seconds later he was back tailgating me. If I could I would have loved to release a 2x4 through his windshield.

Green Left-turn arrrows light up and she proceeds straight through the red light almost hitting two cars

I'm often tempted to do this when I have some moron riding my back bumper. I always think about the potential for a huge pile up when the guy does lock up, loose control, skids across three lanes taking out the minivan with the kids in it, and having to watch in the rear view mirror as the 10 cars following plow into the wreck. Maybe I have a vivid imagination, but that always stops me from doing it.

I get it all the time... Only this last incident left me driving away with the biggest smile on my face after LMFAO!!!!

Recently had some Nice'n (Nissan) 4 banger 'rice' following closely behind with obvious intent of letting me know he was back there. I tried ignoring him at first, didn't work So, in somewhat heavy traffic I managed to gracefully weave through just in time to skip under a RED light leaving him stopped there. However, it ended up that I caught the very next one a block away. Knowing what was about to happen next, I noticed that my next turn was onto the 75mph freeway. He gets out of the hole on the green light first and roars to speed. I get the green a few seconds later and OFF I go toward my left hand turn at about 50 mph. What happened next was pure freakin enjoyment.

I make the turn without a hitch and on to 3rd doing about 80 mph when I look back in the rear view at rice boys attempt (failing horribly) at the same cornering maneuver. The understeer of his rice leads him right off the road and into the dirt for a complete 180 degree spin at the on ramp. I'm in a complete ball of laughter at that point. Best part of all is when he gets that heap back on the road and tries to catch up... by that time I had already hit 130 and settled back down to speed limit. He was nothing but a dot on the horizon.
For all those ricer and road idiot moments, this one moment made up for them all.

I nearly got hit the other day by some idiot changing lanes into me. I slammed on the brakes and was able to get out of his way, then rode the horn until he realized what he had done. He wasn't on a cell phone, wasn't elderly, wasn't a "ricer," wasn't even an asian* woman! He was just another guy not paying attention.

Our roadways are cluttered with idiots. People have no comprehension of the laws of physics as they apply to their cars, no comprehension of how ugly a freeway speed accident can be, and no clue how to drive.

But complaining is useless. How do we fix the problem? More police aren't the solution -- they just ticket "speeders," and seem to always miss the important problems. Can we push for legislation to make licensing more challenging? Who do we push, and what lobbying organization to we get behind? There must be some way to repair the roads...

Dan

*The "asian woman" comment is actually a reference to another thread. If you don't get it, you may possibly have a life, because you're not reading enough Pelican.

I tend to get a kick out of aggravating these idiot drivers. I know that a lot you guys just ignore them or make it easy for them to get out of your hair. I love to toy with them. If someone tailgates me, I love to slow down way below the speed limit. If they try to change lanes to pass me, Ill just move over with them. This usually goes on for several minutes then I give up.Its not really that dangerous and it puts one big grin on my face for miles.
