"They hate us for our freedom" - Epiphany

The Bush administration keeps telling us that the terrorists "hate us for our freedom," while at the same time, stripping away our freedoms. It never made sense. Suddenly, it dawned on me. I get it now: once we have lost our freedoms, the terrorists won't hate us any more! This guy is a genius!

In other news, a man "died of fright" after being caught by religious police in Saudi Arabia. He was washing his car at a carwash, during a designated prayer time (gasp!). Died of fright = beaten like hell? Considering that our "friends" in Saudi have a group of 5000 men dedicated to enforcement of Islam law, I don't think we're that bad off. I don't agree with the direction our govt has taken in recent years, but we're a long ways from that hell.

Ba-dup Chiiinnnngggg very well done, Shaun. Okay, the whole "getting groped to get on an airplane" is a bit over the top (esp in the light of flight 93). But that aside, what are the big freedoms we have lost? --- key word "lost" ...not suspended, but lost.

The failure to uphold and blatant erosion the Second Amendment at all levels of government, and the pushing of more dependence on government for basic needs is a far bigger threat to individual freedom than any crap people are whining about on this thread.

Exactly, and the same rationale used to take away personal privacy and freedoms will be used to take away our guns.

The trend towards a dependence on govt is the biggest threat facing our society in general. When the majority of us depend on mother governement to provide such basic things as food, money, and health care, we are all in big trouble. This sort of lazy, apathetic attitude is not only prevalent, but being promoted by many in our government. These various entitlement programs are ruining lives and ruining our country.

And to be perfectly honest, I'm not to concerned about the things people mention on this thread. These things are being watched like a hawk and Pelosi/Reid will be all over any movement a millimeter in the direction of restricting freedom. It is the restrictions that they agree with and the press silently ignores that are the real threat.

Bin Laden is a tricky situation. We could charge in, a la Barack Obama (which I find ironic because he decries doing exactly that in Iraq), and get him in a few weeks. That would also probably lead directly to the overthrow of Musharaff and the instatement of a Taliban-style government in Pakistan. We could do what we've been doing, which is the uncomfortable compromise between keeping Musharaff in power and not getting Bin Laden--hoping some sort of opportunity will present itself. Or we could give up. Obviously, it would be much easier if Bin Laden was in a more stable country, but he wouldn't be hiding in a more stable country...

Bush's statement is wrong. They want is dead 'cause we're infidels. Freedom doesn't have a damn thing to do with it. Open your eyes while you still can.

Received by email this am. Written by an Australian Dentist To Kill an American You probably missed this in the rush of news, but there was actually a report that someone in Pakistan had published in a newspaper, an offer of a reward to anyone who killed an American, any American. So an Australian dentist wrote an editorial the following day to let everyone know what an American is . So they would know when they found one. (Good one, mate!!!!) "An American is English, or French, or Italian, Irish, German, Spanish, Polish, Russian or Greek. An American may also be Canadian, Mexican, African, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Australian, Iranian, Asian, or Arab, or Pakistani or Afghan. An American may also be a Comanche, Cherokee, Osage, Blackfoot, Navaho, Apache, Seminole or one of the many other tribes known as native Americans. An American is Christian, or he could be Jewish, or Buddhist, or Muslim. In fact, there are more Muslims in America than in Afghanistan. The only difference is that in America they are free to worship as each of them chooses. An American is also free to believe in no religion. For that he will answer only to God, not to the government, or to armed thugs claiming to speak for the government and for God. An American lives in the most prosperous land in the history of the world. The root of that prosperity can be found in the Declaration of Independence, which recognizes the God given right of each person to the pursuit of happiness. An American is generous Americans have helped out just about every other nation in the world d in their time of need, never asking a thing in return. When Afghanistan was over-run by the Soviet army 20 years ago, Americans came with arms and supplies to enable the people to win back their country! As of the morning of September 11, Americans had given more than any other nation to the poor in Afghanistan. Americans welcome the best of everything...the best products, the best books, the best music, the best food, the best services. But they also welcome the least. The national symbol of America, The Statue of Liberty, welcomes your tired and your poor, the wretched refuse of your teeming shores, the homeless, tempest tossed. These in fact are the people who built America. Some of them were working in the Twin Towers the morning of September 11, 2001 earning a better life for their families. It's been told that the World Trade Center victims were from at least 30 different countries, cultures, and first languages, including those that aided and abetted the terrorists. So you can try to kill an American if you must. Hitler did. So did General Tojo, and Stalin, and Mao Tse-Tung, and other blood-thirsty tyrants in the world. But, in doing so you would just be killing yourself . Because Americans are not a particular people from a particular place. They are the embodiment of the human spirit of freedom. Everyone who holds to that spirit, everywhere, is an American.
