How many toys can a kid eat...

before he dies of lead poisoning?

Now I realize lead in bad for you. Did you know the term "Plumb Crazy" is from plumbers inhaling the smoke from leaded solder and acting a little wacked out.

The media has to have something to report on...

I'm not sure "plumb crazy" fits into the same idea as "mad as a hatter", where mercury poisoning DID make the hatters goofy. Lead poisoning usually manifests itself as lethargic at first. Then aches and pains. It's hard to rid the body of lead if it goes away at all. So, it's still bad stuff and it doesn't take a whole lot if the exposure is constant.

All of us older guys grew up with nothing but lead paint all around us and we used to rob the mercury out of oil field gauges to play with it. I washed parts in gas and bathed in acetone when I did fiberglass. I'm still here at 62.

I see a lot worse environmental issues than these toys and there have been many that have been addressed, like asbestos. However, the toys must be collected and disposed of.

So, we should be collecting all of the old toys in the world, and disposing of them?

I see your point. But, allowing a child to come into continuous contact with a known source of lead would be negligent, no?

I have lots of "collectibles" that are probably not suited for infants or children.

The title of this thread reminds me of the Monty Python movie where they talked about all the gold they could eat.

Its also where the term "plumb" as in level and plumb bob come from, the latin word for lead and the periodic table notation Pb or plumbum. If you smoke, try soldering and taste the sweet taste of lead while you do so (assuming you can still get lead solder). It doesn't take much lead to cause developmental brain problems from lead in little kids. A few chips of lead-based paint from an old window sill ingested by a kid can lead (not lead as in Pb) to serious developmental problems.

Lead dust used to be a sweetener in desserts. I think the biggest problems were in begetting heirs.

I ran with scissors and never once wore a helmet while bicycling. Never had stiches, never broke a bone. I made it.
