Average life of 911 interest?

I know there's a lot of you who have been Pelican's for years. I began a short while ago. What typically happens to us over time and where do we go from here? What typically happens to the air cooled 911 enthusiasts, trading up to a new(er) 911? Leaving for a BMW or MB? Keeping the same ride, or always on the lookout for the perfect one going later or earlier? I just can't see ever selling my 911, I love it, and I'm not sure if there will ever be a car again like it.

Gee, I dunno...wild guess? 40 years or so...at least for me. But now..turning the page. I used to think I'd never want to be without one, but attitudes change, I guess.

Are you refering to air cooled cars, or all 911s?

I had my air cooled car (82 targa) for about 3 years. I bought a boxster, and was driving the 911 less and less.....just seemed time to part ways.

Would I buy another one(air cooled car)? Probably not. I LOVE air cooled 911s, they are works of art. But there is something to be said for modern engineering as well.

Most likely next Porsche will be a 2005-6 997, but thats a long way off. I am very happy with my Boxster, and plan on driving it for many years.

I bought my first one almost 30 years ago and am currently on my fourth. There have been periods of non-ownership, but I always seem to succumb to the Porsche bug.

Kinda like automobile herpes, once you catch the bug, it's always returns

Bingo! Despite only getting my '87 three and a half years ago I cannot ever imagine being without it. That was bad enough, but when I got the 944 and started using that as a daily driver I realised how spoiled I was. It was such a good car to drive that I couldn't imagine driving anything other than a Porsche ever again, so when my girlfriend suggested I got something a little newer and more reliable (not that the 944 has ever left me stranded) it just became a question of which Porsche, not which car. As being as I needed back seats for my boys a Boxster was out of the question. I have never really liked SUV's, so no Cayenne. It was a fairly simple choice.

So I think that might be one answer - you will just accumulate them.

Doubt that I will ever sell my current 911 but if I found a nice '72 model might be tempted.

Do not believe that I will ever be without a 911 in some form in my life. Started in the P-car world in high school helping a friend restore a 356, and almost 40 years later the feeling is still the same.

I think most folks who buy an air cooled 911 (60's-80's) are buying their dream car/time machine. Some of them will have expectations that cannot be met regarding performance and overall liveability. Those owners will turn the car within 5 years and move on to something more current in the manner that HardDrive describes above. It's kind of a bummer when you idolize the 911 for so long and then once you get one realize that it's just a tick faster than some the newest mini-vans you find clustered out front of the local elementry school.

My mistake was using my '86 as a daily driver which was 70 miles RT each day on the I-15. With a black exterior and barely there AC the summer months were uncomfortable. Stop and go traffic was no fun. No cup holders... What I should have done was keep a cheap commuter car handy, or bought my motorcycle at the same time, to break up the commuting duties. Now I'm lucky to be able to work from home and pick the hours I choose to commute (late in - early out

). I'm spinning a plan to get another 80's 911 into the garage sometime in 2008.

I just wish I had been smart enough to get my first 911 in my early twenties. One of the big mistakes of my life. I drew them on my Pee Chee folders in grade school.

Finally picked up this SC in my forties. Hard to imagine ever being without a 911. In recent years, it has seemed increasingly clear that I need more than one. One loud uncomfortable monster that weighs about a ton, and a quiet comfortable thing that weighs under 1.5 tons.
