Shredding documents en masse?

I am looking into getting rid of a lot of documents I have been holding in storage dating back many years. These are mostly redundancies of everything we have electronically.

I am tired of storing them carrying them around and want to dispose of them all at once.

We are talking about 5 filing cabinets full of documents. I want them shredded because if a competitor was to get hold of them they would be beneficial to them.

What can I expect cost wise and is there any company I can look for that specializes in this?

I purchased the biggest shredder I could get I the local office supply store and it is still too wimpy for the job.

try www.shredit.com. Coincidentally, Moses's buddy Greg Brophy who died in the plane crash was the CEO of Shred-it.

I had a similar problem when my father died. He had owned two business and had pay stubs going back to 1969.

At first, we had my wife shredding paper in the storage space. My dad had two shredders and each only lasted for 12 hours of continual use before it died.

Then we took 200 lbs. of paper home. Burning it was too slow and too much of a mess.

I was between getting a commercial shredder (they start at $500) and getting a wood chipper (they also start at $500) when I decided to call Iron Mountain (document management company). They quoted me $0.10 per pound as long as I did the drop-off. So, for $20, I was rid of the paper and had a certificate from them. They are bonded, so they are liable if a document you turn over to them is mis-used.

Yeah, they have these trucks with built in shredders. Will show up and do it all in front of you.

That or a giant bonfire in the parking lot.

There are any number of companies that do this, and I bet you will find several local ones. Law firms use them all the time to get rid of outdated files they no longer need. Company comes by in a truck and shreds them at your location.

What Kurt said. Any number of companies offer on-site or drop off shredding at reasonable prices. Just check the yellow pages under document management or shredding.

A bonfire doesn't work well because unburned documents get pulled up bu the updraft and land intact all over the place.

I found one and bookmarked it. I am calling in the morning. We are moving the office in about a month to a much smaller space and I really do not want to take these 5 filing cabinets with me.
