| SoCal Wild fires
Burning in Canyon Country a few miles from me. Wouldn't worry except there is a lot of open space between me and that fire. The sun has been blotted out by the smoke all afternoon. Winds are picking up as the sun goes down. One of my work buddies has been evacuated from Topanga Canyon in Malibu.

Stay safe, Hugh. Couldn't imagine having to deal with those fires.

Any progress on containment, when it was on the news earlier today, they said they had no success in containment. Hope they are making some progress in this respect. Stay safe!

The last 18 hours have been pretty scary. Around 5:30 I saw a little flareup and 2 subsequent water-drops a ways down the canyon I live in. There is nothing but fuel for miles and miles around here, and the wind is still blowing like hell.

Best of luck to all you Pelicans (and your neighbors) in Malibu/Canyon Country/etc. Must be a very helpless feeling right now.

To put it in perspective, the Aqua Dulce fire traveled down the 14 freeway 15 miles in a few hours, its a few miles from my house now. Yeah, I'll stay alert tonight. Noah, you live in Cape Cod? I absolutely love the Cape. Grew up outside of Boston and used to spend summers at Gull Pond near Wellfleet. Heaven on Earth.

The fire is on the left, smoke was blowing out to sea.

We have two fires currently totalling over ten K+ acres in eastern San Diego County. The areas are far from being as densely populated as Malibu. We can smell smoke from them on the coast. Just saw an emergency notification on the TV saying there was a manditory evacuation of one of the areas. Did anybody see the story 60 Minutes did on fire this evening?

Two of my friends in Malibu were forced to evacuate their homes early this morning. One lives on Malibu Crest, the other on Carbon Mesa. An acquaintance had his office next to the Malibu Presbyterian Church, which burned to the ground. As of about 8 this evening, the Malibu fire was 'zero percent contained.' Fingers crossed...

The news reports the winds are kicking up again. It's going to be a difficult night.

Whew looks like we dodged a bullet tonight! We had really heavy winds that finally got me out of bed only to be greeted with a bright orange ridgeline just 1/2 mile away. I got the wife up and we got the packing under way. Then the sky got really orange and I could see a couple flames but the winds were blowing the fire Southwest away from our property. 3 police cars were going up and down the streets calling for evacuation. That's when our kids got up and I had the car in the driveway ready to go. I just got back from hosing down the backyard and from my deck it appears the flames have countinued away and South...for now. Car is loaded with valuables so it's back in the garage and we're putting the kids back to bed now and the wife and I are up with first watch. I hear some structures in San Elijo may have been burned but details are sketchy at this point.

Hang in there...my family went through similar fires back in the 60's and 70's. We had our "fire plan" down. Best of luck.

Hugh any updates this morning? Watching fox right now in the coffee shop, doesn't look very good at all. Stay safe out their guys! A hurricane is just some wind damage, but man a fire would take it all to the ground! Water those lawns boys.

Wow- good luck to you all. Hey- in college, we used to build these 'booth' things for a competition. The long and short is, the fire marshall made us douse everything in this special flame retardant stuff you could buy in gallon jugs. Any chance a spraydown with this on your house and yard could help? I don't think it would stop a fire line, but I bet it would help with embers.

Daughter and I evacuated in Rancho Santa Fe - safe for now in Leucadia, but may have to leave here soon. Never seen it this bad. I left my bills and my Daughter left her homework at the house. Best, Kurt Last edited by kstar; 10-22-2007 at 07:31 AM..
