I didn't say the Mustang only won because the WRX missed a shift. I merely made an observation that the driver didn't seem to know his cock from his clutch. Surely we can agree on that?

Well, I'm off to the bars, it's that time:) We'll continue when I'm back, and drunken.

Take care guys@!!

Dude, I have one. 87 is the only year S4 with a stick. 88, 89, 90, 91 s4=auto, GT=stick. And that's not the only reason it's not faster. Very high gearing for ultra high cruise speeds is another. Remember, 928's had the fastest top speed of any Porsche every year they were produced.

Chuck Beck's son told me a great quote at a track event a few years ago while testing the 904 project (a very fast car too)

The Japanese rate horse powder by Shetland ponies, Germans rate HP with Clydesdale's
Cool guy but he would walk away from everything on the track in that 904 prototype:eek:

Well said.

Admittedly it's been a few years but I seem to remember that back in the late 80's or early 90's Audi's with AWD running their turbo 5 bangers handed the Mustangs and Camaro V8's in Trans-Am and some IMSA classes their collective rears. So bad that they changed the rules to effectively outlaw the Audi's. The V-8's put out a lot more HP and were faster on long straights but couldn't touch the Audi's handling wise in the corners. The Audi's could go places on the course the RWD cars wouldn't dare go.

Mule 10-29-2007 08:21 PM

Agreed. Those Audi's were targeted to take advantages of specific opportunities in the rules of the sanctioning body & rocked. I think one year they won every race. Not quite the same as what we're talking about.

Mule I am with you and would never ever buy one of those...

I bought what I believe it's the pinnacle of the American car engineering.

And I do not care if I get spanked by a Japanese import with 1k HP under the hood....

But it would be foolish to think that they cannot build good cars...

onewhippedpuppy 10-30-2007 03:34 AM

Matteo, you own a genuine sports car, not a muscle car. Not only a sports car, but one of the most attractive sports cars ever made. No apologies necessary for your decision.

911teo 10-30-2007 04:00 AM

Matt my point is that there is always going to be one guy that is faster in a cheaper car.

There is always going to be a car that bests what one is driving in some areas.

For me the Japanese cars are not that attractive and do not stir the same emotions like a 911 or the GT.

But I think Mule's point of view is too simplistic and narrow.

The Evos, Scoobies and Skylines are wonderful cars that put to shame not only the 'Stang, but the best of the European crop (M3s, AMGs, Audi S-lines) in stock form.

Saying that their engines would not sustain the abuse for more than a couple of hours is also wrong.

The video above is a testament of what can be done to an old R33.

onewhippedpuppy 10-30-2007 04:22 AM

Totally agreed Matteo. Many of the Japanese budget supercars can show their tail-lights to the best the world has to offer, but they just don't have the same soul. They may be able to go faster, but they won't be having as much fun.

I watched the video. Notice no time from the 1/4 mile run. Either Jeremy was scared to death or that's 1000 miniature hp & a number of them were killed by pit bulls. I doesn't look like 1000hp or sound anything like 1000hp. Jeremy pegged the needle on the BS detector. Want to see what 1000 real hp looks like, click here. See if you think this car is more powerful! http://videos.streetfire.net/video/9e21b566-0976-4929-a884-98af011c130d.htm

Matt, you have without a doubt one of the finest sports cars available. My point is not that this is faster or that is faster. My point is that in order to make big powere with a 4cyl, they have to be heavily stressed. Heavily stressed pieces break. Nothing more, nothing less. 700hp in any fwd 4cyl anything is undrivable and about to blow up. 700hp in a rwd V8 car can be streetable & reliable. Taht's it.

I have no objections to this statement.

The Jeremy Clarkson's vido was just with a bit of tongue in cheek... these days you can find anything on the web to prove your point.

Last notes
- I never even considered any 4cyl FWD cars to be part of the debate...

- The latest EVOs put out 405hp in stock trim....

- The real Japanese car to deal with has always been the Skyline (6cyl 3.0 4WD)

Look at the difference in Jeremy's face behing the wheel of this 700hp Ford GT.

I referred to my RX7 at the beginning of this thread and in all honesty I have as much fun if not more fun in it than I do my 911. Getting out of one and jumping into the other to compare them has always been a lot of fun to me. But, to be honest with you, there are many times I am in the 911 and think, man, this would be way more fun in my RX7.

The "soul" of my RX7 is the Rotary engine, no one else has one on the road, yeah, you could say a 911 is unique because its, air cooler, rear engined, etc.. but when you boil it all down its just another boinger car. :D

I alluded to it earlier as well, my RX7 is lightweight, 2400 lbs in track trim with A/C, a stereo including a bazooka tube, and full interior, it used to put 400 to the wheels and with the new turbo and fuel we are expecting closer to 500 to the wheels. The car will flat out make you crap your pants at full throttle.

I brakes like it threw an anchor and corners like it is on rails. Its a total blast to drive, it does not matter if I am carving up a mountain road, setting FTD at a local AX or shocking 100K+ car owners at a open track day, its a total blast.

The best part about it is no one expects it at all. The snickers and silly grins in the paddock before a track session usually end up being visits and a million questions after.

Mule 10-30-2007 05:17 AM

I bet these guys are scared to death the 4cyls will show up.

I remember seeing the TT-GT in Car & Driver. Very cool, but not cheap.

Ford GT ($160k) + Twin Turbo Kit ($35k) = 1000 HP ($195k)
