Road tax cheats!

People who use electric vehicles are cheating all of us on the road tax. They are not paying it. They pay NOTHING to support our infrastructure. They are cheats and must be reigned in. I propose that owners of electric vehicles pay a road tax equal to a gas engine that gets 20 MPG. In CA thats about $0.60 per gallon or $0.030 per mile. I propose that all electric vehicles submit, at tax time, the miles they drove and pay the gas tax at that time. Nothing less is fair. ;In fact I DEMAND that the taxing authority start to enforce this, now!!

Owners of hybrid vehicle need to submit to a gas tax of one half of the electric vehicle or $0.015 per mile.

and since hybrids can use the car pool lanes they should be subject to twice the rate, ie $0.030 per mile, just the same as everyone else.

Note 20 mpg is the actual rate of mileage a real hybrid achieves.

They are exempt for a reason...the gov't is encouraging people to purchase more electric vehicles. What's wrong with that?

I agree with Snowman. Honestly, I've never really thought about it, until you started this thread. Our gas guzzlers are paying taxes for new roads and maintenance that electric or hybrid cars don't, but they are using the roads just the same. I think that is wrong.

Get an electric car and laugh at all the gas guzzlers...

Nonetheless, I'll stick with my gas-hogs until the very last drop of gasoline drips from the hose. We only pay $35/yr. here for registration/road tax.

Not all hybrids get to cruise int the car pool lane. They do run on gas as well and are not as fuel efficient as touted to be. Lexus 400H only gets a couple more miles to the gallon and the electric motor really is only there to give some extra power to the wheels. Don't the Maserati 4 door, that only gets 12 miles to the gallon even things out?

No, you pay a percentage on every gallon.

Oh, I thought he was ranting about the "gas-guzzlers" tax in California.

Doesn't matter. I hope gas goes to $7/gal. so there will be less traffic on the road. I'm tired of dodging rusted Camry's (the National Vehicle of Haiti)...

Have no fear. When there are enough electric-only vehicles out there (or if the avg mpg gets too high), the gubmint will find a way to tax you. Was there ever any doubt?

So by getting worse mileage I'm actually helping the country's infrastructure.

I've been waiting for a hybrid or diesel half ton truck to come out, but I may just go ahead and get the 6.0 liter GMC or Chevy I've thinking about. And no, this is not sarcasm.

If you want to rant, how about ranting about the people who buy fuel, then put it into something that never sees the road?! Every gallon of gas you pay a "road tax" and if its used in something that never sees the road, in the old days you were eligible to get a refund.

Lawn mowers, off road vehicles, boats and even airplanes all pay the "road tax" yet are never on the road. Kinda unfair IMHO...

Joe... IIRC, there's a form to get tax credit on that.

Another tax cheat: People who run WVO in their diesels. This year a NC man using WVO in his old Merc was convicted of tax fraud and fined. http://tinyurl.com/2r3k6n

Not to worry, though.... Joan Borucki (former California DMV Director) had the answer way back in 2004!

I self-assess my road taxes quarterly @0.17/liter (gasoline is 0.14/liter).

I use the same forms farmers fill out if they use "farm" gas/diesel in their road cars.

It's well documented that some of the state and federal problems with road funding traces back to higher milage vehicles. We are running more miles than ever before, but with more fuel efficient vehicles, the revenue raised by gas taxes hasn't kept pace. So go figure.

The thought of getting a Tesla Roadster is getting more and more appealing. . . It'd be really nice if I could have supercar performance AND get a tax credit for it. Of course, I'd have to sell all the other toys, including the 911. . .

It is tempting to explore the option though. I'll do some more research. Maybe that's the way to go.

Get serious. The number of pure electric vehicles on the road is so miniscule that this proposal is pointless. The govt would spend more to administer and collect the tax than the tax would bring in.

I agree that, when electric vehicles become common, they should be taxed to support road maintenance.

As for hybrid vehicles, they already pay gasoline tax, since they are fueled with gasoline. So are we going to penalize a hybrid vehicle simply because it gets good gas mileage? Wouldn't we prefer to encourage better fuel economy and hence lower oil imports and less pollution?

Taxman!
