I picked up my new 10/22 Carbine last night.

I got the carbine because it is the least expensive model, and I expect to do extensive customization--I didn't want to spend a lot of money on parts I might not ever use.

First, I'll probably get a scope. As this is a .22LR, I don't plan on spending over $100 on a scope and rings. I don't need something that will outperform the rifle.

Next, I'd like to get a bull barrel. They seem to range in price from just over $100 to over $300. I'd like to keep the stock stock, but it will have to be modified to accommodate a wider barrel. Any tips on how best to widen channel for the barrel? I was thinking of just using a curved or round file or rasp and working it until the channel is wider.

I'll probably pick up some hi-cap mags and some after market internals, but I'll see what I do like/don't like about it before making those choices.

Re widening the channel in the stock, I think I have the Brownell tool you need. I'll check when I get to the shop.

This will get you started when you come up with a tube. The barrell rasp is 3/4".

BTW, the Remengton barrell has the cant. mount, is matte finished like the Special Purpose.

What are you looking for for the rasp?

I'm probably going to hold of on getting an 11-87 barrel until I have an 11-87. (I'd hate to end up getting a different model and getting a barrel that doesn't work. Besides, I'm a firm believer in Murphy's Law--If I do buy the barrel now, I won't end up getting an 11-87.

I once bought a nice Bianchi (sp) 4" N frame holster in hopes something would show up to put in it. It happened.

Nikon scopes are a lot for a little money. I think Leupold and the likes are over rated and WAY over priced. The older Japanese Tascos are good too. Don't buy used!

Interesting. I would not buy any scope other than a Leupold. I have had a couple of other brands fail in the field over the years and essentially just had to throw them away. I have had one Leupold fail and I got it rebuilt for free.

I bought this scope used at a gun show about 20 years before it failed. It was at least that old when I bought it. A buddy told me to send it in and Leupold would fix it. So I did, with a letter explaining that I had purchased it used some 20 years earlier. I mailed it on a Monday, and had it back that Thursday. Four days later, I ***** you not. Completely rebuilt; for free. I called the number on the invoice and talked to a very nice lady, explaining how old it was, how I came to be in possesion of it, and all of that. She told me it was a Leupold scope that didn't work; end of story. We don't care about the rest. Have a nice day.

My buddy that told me to send it in then recounted his own story; the reason he told me to send it. His son-in-law was elk hunting in Oregon and managed to roll his Bronco ass over teakettle down a hill. Everyone was fine, but the rifles were in a side window rack in back. His Leupold scope was bent like a banana, with both lenses popped out and the turrets cracked off of the tube. He drove over to the Leupold factory, hoping to get one just like it. Not knowing exactly what model it was (purchased used at a gun show...) he brought it along. The guy behind the counter looked at it, listened patiently to his story, and told him he didn't think they could fix it. Threw it in the wastebasket, went in back, and came out with a new one. Handed it to him and said "have a nice day". Mr. son-in-law asked what he owed him for it. Same reply; "it's a Leupold scope that doesn't work. While that was a great story, it really doesn't matter to us why it doesn't work. No charge. Have a nice day".

About the same time frame a buddy has purchased a Burris scope brand new. Still under warranty, he knocked the rifle over one day and the horizontal cross wire broke. He sent it in under warranty and started a 3 month pissing contest with Burris, who refuse to fix it because knocking the rifle over on it constituted "abuse" and was not covered. They fixed it and billed him a hundred bucks. Without paying the bill, he sent it back with copies of my original letter to Leupold, and their invoice for my repairs. He noted shipping date and return date, and reiterated what I said in my letter - it was purchased used about 20 years before I broke it. He made sure they knew there was no charge. He politely told Burris to pack sand, and that they had created another loyal Leupold customer.

Here I am, still telling this story 10 years later to anyone thinking about buying a scope. The customer service at Leupold has won me as a loyal customer. Try that with anyone who offers a "limited lifetime warranty" and see how far you get. Leupold does not even mention a warranty; they don't feel they have to. Buy one and you have a scope for life. Nowhere else will you get a deal like that.

I agree with you about the warranty Jeff, but he was looking at a buget scope. I am always apprehensive about buying used optics. I have seen a lot of old Leupolds, Redfields, and the likes at gunshows but they are still more than he wants to spend for glass.

Yep, there's no point in my opinion to get a top-of-the-line scope for a .22.

Now if I get a .30-06 or .223 someday, Leupold will certainly be considered.

I've got a CZ .22 that is the best out-of-the-box .22 I've ever fired. I have had great luck with a RedHead scope, believe it or not. If there's at all a budget for your project, save a few bucks on optics (that don't need to be better than the rifle -- or the ammunition). I liked one of the Nikons I looked at as well.

If you need to spend a little more (a syndrome with which I'm innately familiar) I'd heartily recommend a Millet scope.

Sorry, I missunderstood. That was more of a response to I think Leupold and the likes are over rated and WAY over priced. Leupolds are neither. That said, I agree that if you want an inexpensive, quality scope for some plinking fun, Leupold does not fit the bill. They are rather spendy, but you do get what you pay for. In some situations, you don't need what you are paying for with a Leupold.

I've heard good things about the newest generation Weavers. The guys I know that have them are very impressed. I would caution against putting a "cheap" scope on it just because it is a "cheap" gun. Spending a bit more on optics is never a mistake. The Weavers seem like they neatly split the difference between the extravagance of a Leupold and the el-cheapo Tascos, BSA's, and the like.

Yes Jeff you're right i did put an "I" in there and it was misleading.
That said, I like my Tasco world class scopes. I have a 6-24 on my Browning 25-06 and it works perfectly.
Also on the subject of CZ's I have a 550FS in win. 243 with a Tasco 4-16 on it and it works quite well until the gun heats up. Then the full lenght Manlicher stock has a mind of it's own. One of my winter projects.
