Dilemma - regarding honesty

Hi!

This evening, I am doing one of the most dreaded bachelor duties - laundry. I live in a Town Home complex that also shares property with an apartment complex. We each have our own laundry facilities, but I know that some of the people on my side will do laundry on the apt side, so I can only assume that the same is done by the apt side.

I opened one of our two driers and found a folded up $20.00 bill. First thought was to post a note next to the womens underwear that is hanging in the launry room, but then I realized that anyone could lay claim to it. "Yeah, it's my 20, it's green and has the number 20 written on it."

One idea, was to put a note in the laundry room saying something like:

"Object found in drier #1, on 11/20/07 at about 9:30 pm. Anybody missing anything?"

What would you do?

If it were a cell phone yes, a $20. bill? No.... Whoever lost it probably doesn't even know it is missing and probably couldn't account for it..... But your idea of the "Object found" note is probably the best bet to try.... if the owner comes forward in a week or so then your a hero if not then you're the one buying pizza....

Depends on the size and style of the women's underwear hanging nearby...sounds like a great way to meet someone even if the twenty wasn't hers. Think about it...if it is hers she'll think you're a great guy. If it isn't you two can share it over a pizza and beer

If they're granny panties, keep it

I say just pocket it. A 20 today is like the quarter of yesterday.

Keep it. Spend it. Forget about it.

I love reading stories about people who lose large amounts of cash and some sucker finds/turns it in. If you're too stupid to keep track of a giant wad of frogskins, you're too stupid to have it back.

I can imagine that they belong to about 3 of my neighbors, but they are all spoken for. Two are wayyyyyy too high maintenance for me, the other, legal, but too young. There are a couple others that may own them, but I don't want to go there

I agree. Heck, I don't feel that guilty about it! If I did, I could always go to Fry's, they are always there.

On a separate note, I misspelled 'dilemma'.

Maybe I should have made this into a poll .

Personally I would go door to door asking everybody if they lost a $20 in the laundry. Hey wait a minute I'm short a $20...its MINE.

Personally, I wouldn't. Everyone would claim it as theirs. If it is really yours, I'll gladly give it back to you, for a finders fee - maybe a rare spoon?

Dave, you are displaying a level of honesty I thought long gone in todays society. Good for you. You may now keep both the money and a good conscience.

$20 can be very little money, or it can be a great deal of money.
If you keep it and don't try to give it back, then that $20 just cost you your self respect and that is expensive.
if you try and find the owner, you get to look yourself in the mirror and see a person of morals, a good person. In that case that $20 was cleap compared to the reward.

Post a note that says "found, a certain amount of cash".
If someone responds and says "I lost a $20 bill" give it to them.
If no one can describe exactly how much was lost and what the denomination of the currency was, then you get to keep it with a clear conscience.

If that happened to me, I'd probably just wonder where my $20 went. It probably wouldn't occur to me that I might have lost it in the laundry.

There was a story in the paper here about a guy who found a zip-loc bag with $20,000 on a bus and phoned this in to a popular radio station to help locate the owner.

The station got more than a thousand calls from people claiming to have lost this.

If you see this as a "dilemma" you're obviously an honest man and will do the right thing as best as you can decide. Otherwise your conscience will bother you, right? You don't really have a dilemma right? Good on you!

Get a case of beer and invite your neighbors over for a small party.
