Seriously, violence is a big part of life and is necessary for survival. It is a very useful tool for tellnig the story of good vs. evil.
Nudity on TV or in movies does one thing, promotes lust.
You see boobies, you feel lust. If you didn't you wouldn't really care about seeing them so it would be a non-issue.

Watching violence does not necesarily make you feel violent, but nudity makes you feel lustful.
Lust is one of the 7 deadly sins, violence is not.
Violence is in fact included in "Wrath"

Wrath (Latin, ira)

Main articles: Wrath (anger, hatred, rage)

Wrath may be described as inordinate and uncontrolled feelings of hatred and anger. These feelings can manifest as vehement denial of the truth, both to others and in the form of self-denial, impatience with the procedure of law, and the desire to seek revenge outside of the workings of the justice system (such as engaging in vigilantism) and generally wishing to do evil or harm to others. The transgressions borne of vengeance are among the most serious, including murder, assault, and in extreme cases, genocide. (See Crimes against humanity.) Wrath is the only sin not necessarily associated with selfishness or self interest (although one can of course be wrathful for selfish reasons, such as jealousy). Dante described vengeance as "love of justice perverted to revenge and spite".

Again, you're wrong.

*sniff* brings a tear to my eye.

The "sanitization" of movies is quite chilling to me. Here you guys talk about "freedom" but you think it is ok to change/censor art?

If you want to track the downfall of civilizations, look at how the government dealt with art (yes, tv qualifies...broad definition).

The censorship has deep roots in the puritanical nature of this country. And fear. Lots of fear. And guilt. Sex is great for guilt which is great for controlling people. I wish there was the same amount of guilt around violence...

I'd say tv regs have only gotten looser with time. Imagine watching Law & Order or Married With Children back in the days of The Fugitive or Leave it to Beaver. Desperate Housewives in the age of Father Knows Best. Unimagineable. It's gotten a lot easier to get away with stuff on tv since those days.

The regulations were getting looser and looser until NippleGate, then all of the sudden, you could not show a chick's naked butt on network tv any more. It doesn't make sense.

Fondle a naked breast in a Movie = NC17 or X

Cut off naked breast in a movie = PG13 to R

Sad but true.

Nudity is so taboo in this country and extreme violence is just dandy.

This has been discussed before and someone made a great analogy. Which would you prefer your kid to see in real life, a naked breast or even one further seeing to people have sex or someone being beat to death or cut to pieces?

I myself prefer to see the nudity/sex over mutilation murder and I think I would want my kid to see the same.

I am sure some one will blurt out the answer neither!!

NippleGate got fined because it was specifically planned during primetime, when everyone involved knew it would not have been allowed if it had been announced beforehand. Why would anyone wear a tassle over their boob if they weren't planning on showing it off? I'm far more outraged by what the Superbowl calls halftime entertainment than anything else. Do diehard football fans also follow Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake? You might be able to drag me to a football game, though I would hate it. You absolutely could not drag me or any football fan I know to see Janet and Justin perform.

Why is everyone saying the answer is to allow anything on TV? Why not do the sensible thing and cut back on the violence?

Personally my kids don't watch TV at all, at least not live. We tivo shows for them on Noggin or the Disney Channel and that's it. If they want to watch a DVD movie it gets previewed first. You seriously just can't risk having the TV on at all, who knows what is going to flash on the screen at any given time.

I was watching Cheech N Chong movies (amongst other films) when I was 9 or 10 years old. But I had my parents right there to explain anything. I knew it was "dirty", but it wasn't hidden from me. So I was never over curious and trying to sneak things.

You're a good parent for watching stuff with your kids. Good for you. I wouldn't be afraid when a sex scene pops up, kids are smarter than most of us give them credit for.

Now for the stupid nanny crap state FCC, screw them.

Oh please everybody. Get cable or go rent some porn. The FFC some puritanical, controlling organization? Just broad community standards, loosly applied. Still not happy? Go Brazil for a year. Plently of sex and violence and all the rest.

Lets try to keep it on topic, in that this isn't an FCC bashing thread per se, but rather a question of why its ok to show someone get their eye shot out, but not show a naked chick riding a horse.

American TV is crap. The use of sex is stupid and the use of violence is stupid. Puerile and banally tritely pedantically boorish. "Oooh look, Dennis Franz' bare butt, how cutting-edge." "Oooh, a swear word, how gritty. Great writing." It all sucks.

It's not about wanting to see sex on public TV. It's saying why is it OK to have mutilation, rape, murder, etc. But not OK to have breast.

My vote is for taming the violence. Sorry, but I have a 3 and 5 year old. How do I explain violence to them when they see it. And don't say, you can just turn it off. You can't. It's everywhere. Friends houses who don't have kids and don't get it. Department stores. Everywhere. I don't want to shield my kids from the world. But I do want to introduce them to concepts at a point where the brains can comprehend, evaluate, and understand.

If you had kids and saw them act out something they just saw on TV, you would get it.
