Thanks guys...looking like we have it pretty well covered. Just back from town where we bought a few more supplies. Johnco? You eating yet? Singled you out because I followed one of your tips...made a stop at the local liquor store.

Nostril cheese? This is a BIG one...if it comes in, it'll hit Portland as well...look for roads to be blocked by fallen trees, and watch out for live power lines.

Last big blow I experienced here was Columbus day, 1962. I tell ya, if 100 mph winds howl up this valley again, it's gonna be a mess! I have plenty of fresh chain saw fuel for here, and I'm glad I had 5 large trees removed here a few years ago. I was worried that a blow like this could knock 'em into a neighbor's house. These storms usually hit out of the southwest...so our house clear of trees falling north or northeast.

Oh well, we're about as ready as we can be. So, I hope it holds off long enough for me to watch the Beavers beat the Ducks tomorrow.

Good luck to all in Oregon come Sunday...as usual, the coast will get the worst of it, then the valley.

OR..it could all be a false alarm. These things do what they will out there in the mighty Pacific....might blow itself out offshore. I hope so.

Bend over, put your head between your knees and.....buy a generator.
Hope your life doesn't get too interesting.

i suppose i'd consider flooding issues from heavy rains. maybe have a generator (be aware of where the exhaust is routed). otherwise i might lock the storm door.

honestly here we don't even miss work over most hurricanes. sometimes certain restaurants might not be open which is a bummer.

You know, I've thought about a generator...but power outages usually don't last long here. Our longest in 30 years of living here was 7 days...we did fine "camping out" at home. I figure we're set for 2 weeks right now...

flooding I'm not too worried about. Although we live about a mile from the S. Santiam river, there are 2 "flood control" (also power producing) dams upstream from us...both currently at low level, usual for this time of year.

I usually get the cars out of the yard (where big trees could fall on them) and park down the road in a treeless lot. The last moderate hurricane, Bob in '91, brought down every tree on my street and we were stranded for 5 days before they cut a path in. Fortunately my neighbor owns a restaurant within walking distance and we had to eat all of the lobster (on the Weber) before it went bad. He also had a walk in cooler full of beer, which eased the pain. I suggest that you think of it more of a party than an inconvenience.

If this doesn't work for you try my wife's technique, which is to stand near the chimney mast and hyperventilate.

Good luck.

Hoot! Cindy a bit like your wife, Jim...whenever a storm approaches, she heads for the kitchen, cooks up a storm. All laundry done, all dishes washed, the list goes on. My mouth is watering as I type...a ham in the oven. Hell, we can whittle on one of those for days. !

I live in Portland too.

We have a freezerful of meat that I would not like to lose. Perhaps I will buy a generator (though I bet everyone will have thought of this and cleaned out the local Home Depot). How big a generator do I need to keep a freezer and a refrigerator running? Will a $400 1850 watt portable model do? Any more (expense), and I'd rather lose the meat. Can I easily connect it to power the house, or am I limited to running extension cords to just those two appliances?

Also, I am supposed to fly out of PDX to SFO at 8:00 PM Sunday night. I can cancel the trip if really necessary. What do you think - take my chances on the plane and leave my family to the storm, or stay home?

Let's see. Batteries, check. Charge the cellphones, check. Gas up the cars, make a note. Food, we always have plenty of that.
I guess I need to stop by the local sporting goods store for some ammo too. Getting a little low.

Have some big trees to the north and east of the house. Well, too late to do anything about that. I had them trimmed well this summer, dangerous branches removed and generally thinned out. I'm hoping that will be enough.

JYL, you don't want to "backfeed" your house with a generator, unless you have a transfer switch. Others can explain it better than I can. Use dropcords to power the fridge, and freezer. You don't have to run them constantly, probably 30 min. every 5 hours or so. Just don't open the doors on them unless you absolutely have to. Our neighbor ran his generator during a hurricane. He put a piece of plywood over it to keep it dry. The resulting fire almost cost him his house. The Fire Dept here won't respond after the wind gets to 40 mph.
I can't stress enough to have plenty water on hand. Fill the tub, or washing machine. My wife keeps wedding , and family pictures in a basket, ready for evacuation. Some of that just can't be replaced.
Fill your vehicles with gas, and power inverters are very handy.
During the last hurricane that passed through here, we lost power for 1.5 days. We were lucky, (the county manager lives on our street.) Further inland they lost power for 10 days. When the power went out, so did the cable, then we had no idea what was going on. A battery powered radio would be very handy.
Good luck to all of you out there. I will be thinking about you all.

Good luck with this!! I feel for you.

We were down in a beach cabin on the Oregon Coast (Cannon Beach) a couple of weeks ago when winds were gusting at 85mph (that's 136 kph) for the better part of a day and night - and it spooked us completely.

We thought the whole friggin cabin was about to fly away - I have never heard wood make so much noise! And to look out at the foaming surf just outside the window and contemplate that there is nothing between you and Japan - well that really concentrates the mind.

The only thing that saved us in the end was a bottle of Woodford Reserve.

jyl, try to fill every available open space in your freezer with jugs of water. the frozen water will help keep the temps low and you'll have plenty ice if you need it. one hurricane long ago, an avid hunter friend of mine had every duck, rabbit, piece of deer meat defrost when the power went out. he had evacuated out of town for a few days and by the time he got home, all the blood from the rotting meat had dripped out, got into the walls and insulation. wasn't very nice when he got home. wasn't nice for me either as I was the one that had to rip everything out and replace it

Hey! I have one of those. Saving it for "special occasions". Such may happen (or not) in the next week or so...

jyl may have not learned this yet..any empty space in the freezer? Fill it with milk cartons full of H2o, because in a long power outage, it keeps the contents cold longer. In the summer? Hit the carton with a hammer...free cooler ice.

Sheesh! City kids...they never learn.

Err . . . there is no open space in the freezer. I was just complaining about that the other day.

Wife headed out tonight to buy batteries and a few other things. I am passing on the generator, found out that would have to spend too much to have enough watts to start compressor on the freezer. So, its just water, gasoline, and ammo left to get.

And whether to cancel my trip. Am seriously thinking about that. Will feel pretty bad if, say, a tree comes down on the house and my wife has to deal w/ that alone. Wonder if will be able to fly out of PDX anyway, Sun night.
