First slicks shod car pic - F1
As I understand it, the FIA just recently decided to push back by a year the re-introduction of slicks to F1, to 2009. However, Bridgestone rolled out some slicks for recent testing, and this article shows the first pics that I know of running slicks. Is it just me, or does the car look so much better with slicks?
http://www.itv-f1.com/News_Article.aspx?PO_ID=41390 ![]() I still think this is the best looking F1 car, though (Ferrari 643 from early 1990's, I believe)... ![]()

Lest we not forget what happened when slicks went away:

I got used to them. Then, I realized it wasn't but about 2 decades before that F1 cars had some tread. Or was it 3 decades? Maybe I'm getting too old.
What's the big deal? As long as they keep running on 13" wheels, they are a different breed anyway you slice it. |

They are certainly a different breed, I agree. I started watching F1 in 1980 at the age of 5, slicks were all I knew. I love the earlier machines, but to me, modern F1 is slicks. I still think the cars of this new century are the ugliest, with their high noses. I just hope this signals a return to mechanical grip, and a reduction in aerodynamic grip. With no traction control and a proposed return to manual gearboxes, I think the racing could get quite interesting.
Mind you, the finest F1 machines predate F1, I love the old GP machines of the 20's and 30's. Maybe it's just me, but a Bugatti T35 can keep me captivated for hours. I went to the Canadian Automotive Museum on the weekend, and they had a black T37. Just gorgeous. Everytime I run into one of these cars, I can't tear myself away. ![]()

I wonder what the braking performance would be like if they went to 15" wheels, not to mention cornering.

Well, if we are to wax reminiscent, the cigar Lotus and Brabhams were some of the coolest looking cars since the Autounions and Mercedes.

I love the old open wheel Lotus cars. The Canadian Automotive Museum has a Lotus Formula Junior chassis hung from the ceiling, it's gorgeous.

Here is Sir Jack hisself in a Cooper, another fine looking race car. In fact, race cars will never be as clean. Too bad.

What would larger wheels buy them? Other than cooler tires?

Is that your signed pic, Milt? It's a great photo. Those guys were true heroes. I never really understood until I watched the movie Grand Prix with James Garner. To see the tracks with drop offs and buildings built right up to the circuit, only then could I grasp what heroics were involved even getting into these machines.
I read a biography on Tazio Nuvolari, too, that shed some light on what it must have been like in the 30's. Interesting to think more women raced then, then at any other time in racing history. Another favourite, Ferrari 156 ![]() ![]()

I think he was hinting at a larger brake setup.

When Zanardi went from Cart back to F1 he commented on how difficult the cars were to set up with the grooved tires, as if the suspension changes weren't changing anything. I think this is one of the few good decisions F1 has made in a long time.
