The conversation was degraded by inserting Hiroshima (seemingly a "we're worse than them" reference) into the Pearl Harbor remembrance thread. NOT by pointing out it was wrong to do.

Great post sonic. Life would be so much better if we'd have just submitted, right? The we wouldn't have nitwits walking around with guilt complexes. My guess is charleskieffner's dad would have slapped you for this kind of commentery. By the way, if "the greatest generation" were graded on political correctness, they wouldn't grade out too high. Maybe there's a point there!

Also, Truman didn't bomb them, America did!

Hey Mule...don't read so much into my posting that comment and photo.... It wasnt meant to make a "statement" (though I can understand how it might look that way)...

What I was REALLY trying to show was the Closure to it all with the dropping of the A bombs several years following Pearl Harbor... and thats it, no political or social statements from me...just letting everyone draw their own conclusions.

I suspect Sonic was just making a declarative statement. I don't remember reading anything in his post condemning the US for our actions.

clairvoyant?

yeah man... I lean more towards "they started it, we finished it" as a Cause and Effect statement...

Normally....I dont condone dropping an A Bomb and I hope it never happens again...BUT from what I understand we gave the Japanese quite a few warnings before we did it... and the warnings were disregarded. In the movie "Hiroshima" they give a great reinactment of the events. Truman both stated directly that there would be great destruction if they did not surrender, as well as we sent a coded message to their military leaders which they acknowledged but did not heed.

I feel that it is sad, very sad that a quarter of a million humans died as a direct result of that hit, and then there were the fallouts... but I have to ask and consider the fact that they attacked us first and after we controlled the war, they did not surrender when they had a chance with warning.

So, yeah, I wasnt disrespecting Pearl Harbor in any way by posting that.... I was trying to show the end result of their attack.

OT, my father died at a fairly younger age from esophagal cancer....he was a non smoker, and at times I wonder if his 2 year exposure to post A bomb radiation could have been a factor.... Probably not, but I wonder if any studies have been done to the effects on Vets who were stationed there after that period.

Hey skip...just read your post above. As I stated I never intended anything remotely related to the conclusion that you and Mule drew from my posting that pic. Instead of "assuming conclusions" or stating agendas....sometimes it is important to post a relevant response and let everyone draw their own conclusions from it.

At the very least, my posting that photo has stimulated some discussion on it...but dont kill the messenger (me)... I stated my position above, but I guess at the time that I posted that photo last night it didnt occur to me that my posting something about my dad and how he saw the end result of that war, would be taken as me criticizing what happened and what actions America took. ok?

Sonic- Not meaning to kill the messenger. The post did "seem" to me to be making a statement. Even though it's apparent now that was not the intent of the post, I don't think it's unnatural for people to have thought it was a "we're worse" type of statement.

My problem is with people having a problem with people that have a problem with (as it seemed) degrading 12/07/41 with talk of Hiroshima. (boy, how's that for sentence structure)

re: internment... I was just speaking to one of my best friends (he was born on todays date).

He grandparents lost a very lucrative trucking business in CA when they were forced to an internment camp. His other grandparents left CA for another state before the deadline.

My history is spotty here... Was CA the only state Japanese were removed from?

My mother was in Japanese occupied China (Tianjin) and later in Japanese Occupied Singapore, she grew up suffering under the Japanese regime. She is thankful that the war is over, and oddly unlike most in her generation she has no hate for the Japanese.

When I was younger I asked her why she did not hate them as many do; to paraphrase her response 'that was war, the Japanese generation today did not fight that war, I do not like the bad things that happened to us but I do not hate the entire race for the actions of a few.'

It was all along the west coast. And I bet you didn't know the Canadians did the same thing on their west coast.

That's interesting, I know the Germans and Italians were pulled primarily from the East coast, though I imagine that was because that's where most of them lived.
