I actually downloaded a small windows app in college that was a "random error generator". You could set it to pop up a window with a random error every so often, and set the severity of the errors. I would run it when I let my friends use my computer.

It would generate errors like: "User Error: Replace user and reboot."

Running Xenix on Radio Shack Model 12's back in the very early 80's the systems would occasionally freeze while displaying the message:

"This device is not a typewriter"
