What's the best guess on the biggest money miscalculation in world history?

Note: Michael Vick's passion for dog fighting in not eligible but everything else probably is in play.

P.S. Correct answer will be available later.

Well, my answer was what Larry Lindsey disputed. Larry was dumb enough to suggest to his boss Mitch Daniels and to Team Bush that their estimate of the cost of the Iraq war might be a tad low. They were saying $50 billion.

Poor ole Larry promptly got fired. Mitch got punished by getting elected Gov. of Indiana. They must have some sharp cookies in the Hoosier State!

Now, the total cost of the Iraq conflict is estimated to be as much as $2 TRILLION including the long term health costs of our Iraq troops. So that's an approximate miscalculation of around $1,950,000,000,000.00...unless it goes higher. That works out to about $50,000 for every American family...yet our brain trust in Washington has not even attempted to pay for the war. Good deal for us...terrible deal for our kids and grandkids. But they don't vote.

Seems the first guy who posted (teenerted) came to the same conclusion as I.

I would disqualify (I am running this particular show) the inflation of the dollar and the Japanese thing since they were not true miscalculations per se.

But now that I think about I would have to take a closer look into Eric's choice of the Alaska purchase. Man, Russia blew that one!!!

Chinese economy "overvalued"......

I thought that it was exactly the opposite and we are trying to get them to raise the price of their currency.

Miami March 2005.

I was on the road course having a ball, I glanced down at my temp gauge on the front straight and did a double take, 250°!! No way, the gauge is wrong!!

Meh, if I overheat it so what, I have driven on this engine for 3 years and beat the snot out of it. Its probably time to tear into it anyway.... what could it cost?

A figure I have successfully kept from my wife to this day even as I am driving it to break the engine in....

Given percentages, I say I win.

The correct answer would be FDR's New Deal & LBJ's Great Society
