Rolaids - should I?

I've been following all of the buffet threads and doing research on gastrointestinaldisorders.com, etc. I was never into the Rolaids experience, but "Tabs's" (among others) words of wisdom have planted seeds. I am now considering it as an "investment" in upper digestive tract comfort. Not to make money, because how could I make money by simply taking an over-the-counter antacid? The theory would be to start at a reasonable dosage, try it for a year, maybe move up to Pepto Bismol. Either way, I'm taking something I like for a year or so. Anyway, here 'tis-

Rolaids Original. About $4. It's the "plainest" model that Rolaids sells, but that's not the reason I like it. I like it's simplicity and it's history. For example, I don't need all the bells and whistles of something like the fancy new Rolaids Extra Strength Plus Gas Relief Tropical Softchews.

Is it necessary or practical? Absolutely! My stomach really hurts. It's not like my 911, among many impractical things in my life.

Help me out guys - Yea or Nay?

I would think that too much usage of even an over-the-counter medication might not be a good thing. I have found that Zantac 150 occasionally does the trick. And I DO mean occasionally!!

I think you're on the right track. I bought a whole box of "Fauxlaids" from out of the back of the van in the east village once. They worked ok for a while; but in the end they turned my face kind of green. I think you're much better staying with the genuine product.

Prilosec changed my life. I had extreme heartburn for several hours a day. Prilosec cured it immediately, and I've been taking it for about 4 years.

You are not supposed to take it for more than about 5 weeks or so. It turns out that stomach acid plays a big role in keeping you healthy -- killing germs, etc. I decided preventing my esophagus from ulcerating was a fair trade-off.

Instead of all the antacid stuff, for instant relief, a spoonful of vinegar.
For long term relief, a good probiotic. Probiotics are the "good" bacteria, that the majority of most people are missing in their diet. I used to have a bit of a heartburn problem as well as some mild lactose intolerance that has been virtually eliminated with the help of probiotics.

Don't worry, the humor in this thread isn't lost on all of us.. So Jeramy, two questions 1) what time are you getting in town ?? ( looks like clear dry weather perfect for a drive in the mountains!)
2) Shouldn't you be practicing ?? LOL

I have no opinion of my own on this topic.

Instead, I think I'd rather wait, ala Godot, for some pedantic French twit (granted, perhaps redundant) to come along and explain the history of antacids to me, and how I can really do better than Rolaids for far less money.

As long as any alternate antacid choice is OK with my wife.

oui. ce qu'ai voulu dire je pour dire était :

In the antacid world there are several types of consumers. But antacid consumers who are interested in true quality refluxology know that Rolaids antacids are expensive for the quality and the acid reduction quality is mediocre at best, especially in their less expensive products.

Rolaids puts 90% of their production cost into the packaging and only 10% into the antacid. There are much better buys and much better products for the same or less money. If you have really spent time on antacids.com you should have read the on-site review of an internal examination of a recent Rolaid will underscore my comments. If you haven’t read it yet search it out.

Now, in terms of reflux, Rolaids are an easy sale due to the fact that they were the first American company to do modern television advertising and have built up their brand in the eyes of the uninformed consumer. So a Rolaid is fairly easy to sell and often easier to sell for a higher price. So it might be a reasonable decision to purchase a Rolaid at a good price if you think you will eat it soon. But never confuse easy palatability with quality.

All of this applies to the last 25 years of Rolaids production.

Vraiment. Merci.

I assume this only applies to Rolaids produced before 1971?

Let me see if my wife's awake to confirm...

Well, Tim; I'm not necessarily saying that Rolaids AFTER 1971 are particularly "bad", it's just 1971 was the last time I had to use them.

So true. My apologies for the typo. My wife just confirmed for me that she hates all Rolaids made AFTER 1971. So my decision has been made.

I rarely have indigestion, so I've never understood the fascination with "Rolaids". When I do however, I'm always carrying a "spoonful of vinegar" with me anyways, and it provides relief 100% of the time, so I just dont "get it". I realize some consider "Rolaids" to be the status symbol that they've "made it" (past the buffet line), but imo, I equate them to gold chains, car salesmen and fast food. But you should choose which ever remedy YOU prefer and ignore folks like me who've never even been to a buffet (what the hell do we know). However, I'm here to be enlightened or flamed, so have at it. Gotta run...some fat ba$tard in a red suit is trying to break in my neighbors house, so I'm "racking a round" in the .45 (a shotgun is totally out of the question, per the French), and I'm off to check it out.

Merry Christmas everyone !!!

A chili pepper is a good alternative to a spoonful of vinegar and much easier to carry in your pocket.

I once taped a chili pepper to my wrist, but everyone could tell it wasn't the same as a real "Rolaids" even though it did relieve my indigestion so I don't do that anymore. A "somewhat" true story: One time many years ago, I was suffering a bout, so a friend gave me a gin-u-wine "Rolaids", and I was very impressed with his generosity and was feeling better in no time at all. I couldn't believe it...my e-penis also became HUMONGOUS, still didn't match my ego, but I went out on the town anyways. Met this very lovely lady, and started to chat her up, then mentioned the "Rolaids" thing wasn't quite "timely", and alas, she blew me off and wouldn't even give me the "correct time of day". I'll never forget that girl and often wonder what became of her...Missy Slo-Bob, I still think of you often and regret ever taking a "Rolaids" that evening !

My buddy John used to eat them by the roll, but they were pre-'84 Rolaids.

My Father had a bottle of Maalox by the bed table as he always had heartburn at night. After age 30 or so I had the same issue. 5-7 years ago my doctor told me to try Nexium (the purple pill) and it changed my life.

Anyone with gastric issues might give it a try...
