How did you do in the market this year?
Just checked my stock/mutual fund portfolio, from 12/31/06 to close today, my overall investments went up 8.34%, better than the market averages, but certainly nothing stellar. Happy New Year everyone, I'm going to a party then we're driving over to Pasadena before midnight to stay in a friends RV and getting up to watch the Rose Parade.

My portfolio is up 19.83% YTD. Not too bad.... plenty of downside potential, though. Happy New Year, Hugh!

I no longer have one but if I did I'd like to think it would be up 10-12%.

the 401K is up 6 and a fraction. The mutual fund was just over 12%. At least I didn't lose anything.

I'd have done better, but I had a large bond get called around September, and I put it in some Asian funds that promptly headed south a bit. Otherwise I'd be up closer to about 12%, oh well.

Up about 45%, mostly due to the huge TSO run up early in the year.
don't expect the same next year, hoping for 25%. I've got 1/3 in TSO, 1/4th in VLO, the rest in vanguard and other low-load mutuals. |

Beat the street. Average return 22%. Not too bad. I only wish I had more $$$ to put into the market. I see some good plays in the coming year (some calls, some puts).

I could usually find decent Fuji apples, although they were harder to come by late in the year. Other produce was steady. It was sometimes hard to find organic yogurt and soy milk for my black sesame smoothies. But in general a decent year in the market.

Funny, I was just checking the 401k. 11.3% for 07, no complaints. Now my stock positions...

These discussions always crack me up. Why? Because there's not enough info. Here's an example. Lets say I have a 401k portfolio worth $1,000 on 1/1/07. Suppose my investments tank. I lose a full 50% ($500) of my initial investment. But wait, through out the year, I still contribute another $1000. So let’s see..
Amazingly, I just made a 50% "return" on my portfolio! ....WATCH OUT WARREN BUFFET!

Excellent! Decided to retire early about 6 mos. ago, did so and began paying myself 1.5 times what I was earning before retiring (based on my living to 92, at which point I'll be tapped out (in more ways than 1
![]() And, I'm able to give myself a 15% raise as of tomorrow, so I'm happy as a clam at high tide for now. Given the volatility of the market, I'm 50% in cash with the remainder in 5 funds which are very conservative and pay good dividends and 1 individual stock - a LARGE chunk of Altria. When they split off Euro tobacco, probably in Jan., 08, I'll probably keep the Euro tobacco, take my profit on the remainder and keep it in cash while I watch what falls out. Interesting side note: When Bernanke took office he had to disclose his holdings - he owned 1 stock - Altria, which I bought into about 6 years ago. "Altria has been veddy, veddy good to me!".

No, it's based on this formula:
(Total $ value of portfolio on Dec. 31 / Total amount of $ contributed over entire year ) -1 x 100 Paying into the market is not the same as rate of return - how'dya figure that one?

Ask yourself this. How many have an account they have NOTcontributed to? Personal example. My wife's Spousal IRA is up 30%. But then again, we put money into it. Our rollover IRA that hasn't had a dime added to it in 15 years? It's up 8%. Funny thing is, there both composed of pretty much the same investments.

Wow, those are some fine returns...15...20...25...and even 45 percent.
You guys are REALLY wasting your time on this board. If I had that type of investing wisdom, I would immediately hustle my butt to one of those top Wall Street firms and gather in some of those $millions of dollars in bonuses they pass out for much poorer performances . ![]() |

401k accounts (and many other accounts) have money added to them each and every month. Most people site the % the account has increased for the year, including the infusion of additional savings throughout the year.

Bad year. I put everything in GM stock when they came out with that new Suburban. Damn, that was a good-looking truck.

GM is probably why my XOM went up this year.
