Pathological Liars

I've known a number of women who were bona fide Pathological Liars - meaning they could not stop lying even though it was clearly and repeatedly self destructive. Oddly enough, nearly all of the pathological liars I have known have been strippers. If you can figure that one out, let me know. Anyway, I have noticed that the stories they tell all seem to sound very familiar - stories of wealth, status, "connections" (especially to rock stars), beauty (like modeling and/or appearing in Playboy) and also crime, abuse, kidnapping, rape etc etc. In short, they described their lives as though they lived in a hyper-melodramatic romance novel or soap opera. Anyway, I saw the article below describing a woman who lives in the town next to mine. Her stories ring VERY familiar to me. I've heard variations on the same themes from numerous other women again and again and again. So I present it as a warning. If your new and wonderful g/f sounds anything remotely like this, RUN FOREST RUN.

'Outright lies' lead to request for a divorce

...Michael P. is seeking to annul his Las Vegas marriage to his bride of five months. In his complaint, the Westboro man claims that his wife induced him into marriage "through a series of elaborately constructed gross misrepresentations and outright lies about her background, financial status, employment history, marital history, criminal background, family background and her very strong connections to the entertainment community in California."

That doesn't even begin to cover the complaints of poor Mr. P., whose full name I'm withholding because the guy has been through enough.

In a cautionary tale of the pitfalls of online dating, Mr. P. said he met Crystal P. through an Internet dating service last fall, when she told him that she had moved to Massachusetts from California to escape the "fast life," and that she was very "in" with the entertainment crowd.

He says she told him on their first date that she was a registered nurse, had won a powerball lottery, was the niece of the guitarist for Motley Crue, had at one time posed for Playboy, and that her ex-husband was in prison for kidnapping her and locking her in a trunk.

In later meetings, she claimed to have worked as a multilingual interpreter in Washington and as a negotiator for the Los Angeles Police Department, where she once saved a man who threatened to jump off a bridge, according to court papers.

For some reason, the relationship progressed. One day over lunch, after Mr. P. revealed that his favorite band was "Rush," Crystal confided that the lead guitarist had been her best friend for 30 years.

"Michael was initially skeptical of her claim but, as with most of the lies Crystal told, the conviction, emotion and the detail with which she expressed them made Michael believe her," according to the complaint filed by Mr. P.'s lawyer, Jonathan E. Fields of Wellesley.

She also told him that she was once engaged to the son of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, who was also friendly with Alex Lifeson, lead singer of Rush, and that the three had been inseparable until a tragic bungee jumping accident in California killed her fiance.

"Shortly thereafter, Crystal confided in Michael a huge secret," according to the complaint. "She claimed to be the illegitimate child of John Lennon and Janis Joplin." Oh, yeah, and Steve Tyler from Aerosmith was her godfather.

At some point, she claimed that a man she was instant messaging was Mr. Lifeson, and she pretended to hook him up with Mr. P. on the Internet, according to papers. Mr. P. also "spoke" to actresses Liv Tyler, Diane Lane and other celebrities. On Feb. 12 of this year, one day before they got married, Mr. P. received an e-mail from "Alex" that indicated Crystal was financially well-off and receiving large checks from his band.

"It has since become apparent to Michael that, contrary to her extravagant claims, Crystal's financial resources are as limited as her alleged contacts in the entertainment industry," says the complaint, which also claims that she concealed a criminal record and had scammed a former boyfriend.

Their marriage has since faltered, and Crystal is now falsely claiming she is pregnant, according to the complaint.

"More recently, the claim has escalated - Crystal now says she is pregnant with triplets," says the complaint. "In fact, according to information received from University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, she is not pregnant."

Crystal now reportedly lives in Ashland, but could not be reached. The complaint alleges that she exploited Mr. P.'s good nature and "perhaps his gullibility" for financial gain, and that the marriage is void "by reason of her insanity."

Alex Lifeson is not the lead singer of Rush, he's the guitarist. And a damn good one too. Geddy Lee is the singer.

The guy should have had the sense to dump her simply for getting that one wrong. Idiot.

Even this??

"Shortly thereafter, Crystal confided in Michael a huge secret," according to the complaint. "She claimed to be the illegitimate child of John Lennon and Janis Joplin." Oh, yeah, and Steve Tyler from Aerosmith was her godfather."

Is there such a things as pathologically gullible?

Concur. Any real Rush fan would have known she was full of it right away. And she would also have probably mentioned she knew Alex by his real name, which is not Lifeson.

My father was a pathological liar. He claimed to have a Masters from U of I and a PhD from University of Chicago. I've since discovered that both are were lies. He claimed to do government work, know lots of celebrities and so on. All lies.

A high school friend that I ended up going to college with was a major pathological liar too. She once called me up and told me that she was scared of a male friend of ours and that she needed me to talk to him for her. I called the guy up and he started laughing. She had called him and told him the same thing about me.

When I started dating my now-wife, she started spreading rumors amongst our friends that I was a coke-head (never touched the stuff) and that my wife was trying to get pregnant by me. (This was a week or two into our dating and we hadn't even done the deed yet.) When I called her on it, she moved to Colorado--that day--and I never heard from her again.

My take is that pathological liars don't really like their lives and like to invent problems to make their lives more exciting and to attract the attention to them that they so desperately seek. In high school, I noticed that I had a propensity to lie for these same reasons. Being the introspective fellow that I am, I resolved to stop. I didn't like the feeling of getting caught lying.

That last sentence was my first thought after reading the previous 2 paragraphs.

I think that is an error on the part of the journalist. Notice the story is originally that Crystal was best buddies with the guitarist and then the story is that she is "inseparable" from the singer (but with the guitarist's name). I think the journalist got it confused.

The one about being Janis Joplin's love child is more insane than any I've ever heard (although not by much) and may have been the one that tipped off Mr P that something was very wrong. Most of the rest of the stories were at least possible (if improbable) and so the natural instinct in good hearted people is to trust.

My cousin was one. She blew back into town at one point (some 25 years ago) and told everyone she was pregnant and had a boyfriend. She then told my sister in law that I got her pregnant (fat chance). We then found out from her mom that in fact she had a hysterectomy many years previous (she already had a 10 year old daughter at the time) so she couldn't be pregnant.

She was whack. She blew out of town after her story crumbled and haven't heard from her since.

Just wanted to pull out a few phrases that should have been a clue from the start:

" his Las Vegas marriage "
"met Crystal P. through an Internet dating service "
"was the niece of the guitarist for Motley Crue"

Obviously not all ppl are as blatant as this one. She suckered him, but c'mon it sounds like he must have wanted to BE suckered... Who would believe all this crap?

I've met a few people like this. There is never a simple problem, everything's a huge drama. "We can't make it" turns into "We were on our way when a deer totalled our car (that they are still driving). "I have a cold" is "Possible brian tumors coupled with diabetes, etc." Stories of kidnapping and ransoms, white slavery, etc... All from the same person.

I had a friend in high school like this. A very attractive gal but a TOTAL drama queen/attention whore. She hooked up with a friend of mine who was sort of a male counterpart to her personality, always having to be at the center of every conversation and constantly demanding attention. In a way I guess they were perfect for each other.

Anyway, she eventually broke up with him and tried to win my sympathy by concocting some story about how he'd gotten her pregnant and she'd miscarried and buried the fetus in the woods. Seriously mentally disturbed girl. I have no doubt whatsoever (plus my friend's testimony) that she was outrageous in bed though.

I also have no doubt to this day that she was trying to get my sympathy to drive a wedge between me and my (then) girlfriend at the time to "get back at" my friend by f*cking my brains out. Which, stupid me, was too honorable to let happen. Of course my girlfriend at the time who I was so chivalrous towards eventually ended up cheating on me. Go figure. . Yea, I was an idiot. I bet it did piss my friend off to no end that I saw through her ruse and her ulterior motive and kept it purely friendship though. I was probably one of the few guys she couldn't control or manipulate and I'm sure it drove her nuts. Heh, heh, heh. . .

Wonder what happened to her. Probably O.D.'d or something by now I guess. . .
