I think there are three kinds of people who audition for Idol; the talented, the demented and those with really low IQ. It's entertaining as hell though so it's being Tivo'd right now.

American Idol is the current "leader" in a growing number of TV & radio shows patterned on the likes of Jerry Springer. Sadly, it seems that audiences for these shows are taking great pleasure in seeing other people put up for public humiliation. American Idol doesn't need to showcase these losers...there are plenty of truly talented people who could be featured on this show. It's the "freaks" that everyone wants to see....

I can't imagine not having Tivo or any other kind of DVR. The amount of commercials in AI and other shows is unbearable. I certainly wouldn't sit through 2 hours of it, but at 1:15 or so, it's a fun train wreck to watch.

Would someone give Simon a shirt. I can't believe the guy wears $2.99 Hanes t-shirts on the show. Paula looks like a million bucks and Simon looks like he just came in from working in the yard.

My wife and I watched it for the first time the last two nights and one thing really stood out.
The difference in the people from the two cities. What a contrast. Were the people in Philly putting on an act or are they really mostly a-holes? In Dallas I don't think any (maybe one) of the losers had a cross word to say. |

Apparently the stress of volunteering for Am. Idol auditions pushes many of the borderline psychotics well into meltdown. I would imagine that these meltdowns are repeated weekly by most of them resulting in a lifetime of misery for those without talent. Successful entertainment psychotics may still meltdown eventually but a fortunate few can afford to do so...repeatedly... unless it kills them.
Occasionally someone outside of entertainment actually manages to become successful despite real mental illness. However, entertainment rewards people for avoiding reality (aka performing)....reality eventually punishes nearly everyone else for doing the same. |
