Jeremy Clarkson ripped it pretty hard due to Porsche keeping it down so as not to overtake the 911. He said all the potential was there but it needed more power and better brakes.

But what does he know? If it is not Italian red with a horse on the hood he doesn't like it.

Is it a base Cayman or is the S?

While both are amazing and I would kill for either, the base model doesn't feel that special. It just doesn't feel that fast when you put your foot down, and there isn't a lot of low end grunt. It is still a pretty quick car, but it simply doesn't feel like it. But the S, now that's a different story.

Porcupine on this board graciously let me take a spin in his Cayman S on Angeles Crest. A very interesting experience.

My 930 is a very heavy feeling car. The steering's heavy. The brakes are heavy. The clutch is definitely heavy. Even the throttle pedal takes a conscious effort to depress. There's engine noise (the good kind ). But once underway, it feels sublime. Everything's perfectly weighted. None of that parking lot heft.

The Cayman, on the other hand, is so very light. There's no feel at all to the thing--the steering, throttle, clutch. It's all weirdly effortless. Like a video game. Trying to get underway, I couldn't hear the motor. I thought I'd stall the car because I couldn't feel the clutch engage. (Mind you, this is immediately after hopping out of my 930.) But as I rolled onto the road, I was half afraid I'd just float the thing off the side of the road.

However, once underway, all that overboosted feel went away, and the car was perfectly balanced, like a Porsche should be. The new car handled as intuitively as my 20 year-old one. Not with as much drama as the older car. In the Cayman, I felt insulated from the noise and harshness of my 930, but still with great feel as to what the car was doing. It was easy to see how one can wind up effortlessly driving that car stupid-fast. (Not to say that's why Porcupine's faster than I; he waxes me even when he's in his box stock 11 year-old GTi.)

And parked side-to-side, the Cayman makes my 930 look positively frumpy.

Its a standard Cayman. They want 46k for it. Seems high, but prices in the Northwest are crazy compared to the rest of the country. This is the same dealer (Barrier) where I got my Boxster. I might consider an S, but anything over 50k is going to give the wife fits.

I drove a Cayman S a while back. The car drifted beautifully around a 270-degree onramp. What a hoot!
I'm anticipating a depreciation curve similar to the Boxster's, so I'm not going to get one yet, but there's a very good chance that a Cayman will be seen in my garage before too long.

I have to honestly say that on a good mountain road, there is no better Porsche in my garage than the Cayman, in terms of it's freakishly amazing ability. The '84 Carrera might be a tad more "fun" on the same road, but only because I'd feel closer to ragged edge in it (and at significantly slower pace). The Cayman has simply amazing steering response, incredible grip, balance, and poise and gives you a level of confidence that makes you feel like Michael Schumacher out there.
