SCWDP911 02-03-2008 10:16 AM

looks like a nice drive. NC?

gprsh924 02-03-2008 10:18 AM

That looks awesome...is it less crowded than the Dragon?

I was just reading up on the Dragon earlier this morning and was looking at the pics and such from last year's "Pelicans on the Dragon". If there is another one next year I plan on attending, since its only like 350 miles from me when I am at school. That is, as long as it would be alright if I wasn't in a p-car.

Tim Hancock 02-03-2008 11:11 AM

Ski Mountain rd overlooking Gatlinburg?

gprsh924 02-03-2008 11:19 AM

Sounds good, hopefully I will be able to make it

When the time and place are selected just post the coordinates on the site. We can feed into the GPS - don't tell where it is and we will let the GPS lead. Sort of a secret mission.

BTW you missed a great day and show with BHT Jeremy.

Komenda Fan 02-03-2008 03:47 PM

The secret to these roads is to keep them secret. There are more great roads then just the tail of the dragon, but if you let it out, soon the roads are clogged with too many cars or too many po-po.

speedracing944 02-03-2008 05:05 PM

You have been telling me about these roads for years but we have yet to explore them together. My wife and I are talking about taking a quick trip down there soon to burn some steam and satisfy our traveling itch.

Speedy:)

SCWDP911 02-03-2008 08:30 PM

so is it on our side of the border?

911Rob 02-04-2008 01:59 AM

Yeah, but does it have a cool name like 'Dragon Tail'

I have an exGF that could take that handle?

Anyway, your pics look great, thanks. We also have many similar roads, none with cool names though?

Jims5543 02-04-2008 04:29 AM

While I had a great weekend I was thinking of you and wishing I could be in 2 places at once. It looks like a great place to shake down the 7.

Great pics! Looks like fun.

I am really getting the itch for a road trip, I need to get away and clear my head.

I may force you to show me this road.

Andras Nagy 02-04-2008 07:14 AM

In some ways, that looks a little like the Angeles Crest Highway. We ride it on motorcycles, not Porsches, but my SC would do well there too.

The one things that terrific about the Crest, is that it 56 miles from top to bottom, it takes 1-1/2 hrs. to get to Wrightwood, one can have lunch there, and when you're ready to go back down hill, the road is completey different than going up hill. Oh, and there is Newcomb's Ranch half way up, so if you want you can join hundreds of cycles there (only about 80 on a cold day), and have great omlettes or flap jacks, or whatever.

It make the Dragon's Tail feel like premature ejaculation.

Shadetree930 02-04-2008 07:45 AM

Let me know if this is within striking distance of a day trip for me. I am in for a scouting forray.

911Rob 02-04-2008 10:59 AM

Hey Procon,
Your pics are very good, will be hard to compete with those, but once all this snow is gone and we've got the Pcars back on the road, I'll get some photos posted for ya.

I'm thinking photos from our "Salmon River Run", driving that stretch gives my wife car sickness. ;)

Cheers,

911Rob 02-04-2008 11:04 AM

From my archives, but as I stated, getting good photos like yours is not an easy task, yours are excellent!

Cheers,

If I make it or not your welcome to crash at my vacation home for the night.

Its in town with Procon and has a garage. Jay has the key if I cannot get away for this.

Otherwise we shall see each other in the spring.

Jay, thanks for the pics it looks like a blast. BTW- I got your message this morning I'll call this evening.

Shadetree930 02-05-2008 05:28 AM

OK, I have checked out the proposed route. It makes the Dragon look more like a gecko. The proposed route is SWEET.

rcecale 02-05-2008 09:58 AM

Jay, you are such a tease! LOL :D

mikeferg75 02-05-2008 10:08 AM

I used to do a ton of Mtn Biking in WNC in my racing days... Every spring I would spend a week in Bryson City training.

I remember a road out of Bryson, that goes to a never completed tunnel.

I miss that area of the country.

Reading the thread title immediately made me think of Merlin...

Had a blast

Met Jay on "the road". It was as described, miles of hard twisties on a nearly deserted road. We did 28 miles and only had to deal with one car going in our direction.

Here is a sample of the road:

The true sign of a Pelican:

I gotta get me one of these:

Jims5543 02-11-2008 02:34 PM

This road really needs to be kept under wraps for a while until we are tired of it. ;)

The last thing we want is it to become another Dragons Tail. :D

Shadetree930 02-11-2008 03:08 PM

Jim,

I could not tell anyone where this road was if they tried to waterboard it out of me.

Jay blindfolded me and confiscated my GPS before he flatbedded me to the jumping off point. Then blindfolded and flatbed for me on the way out as well. But the road time in between .... mmm mmm good.

tonypeoni 02-11-2008 03:09 PM

The finest road Ive ever driven is California 1. Carmel By The Sea to the Big Sur. Amazing.

Shadetree930 02-11-2008 03:14 PM

Jay,

I was too busy trying to keep up with you to count the curves. Hoping to do the curve counting once the vids are up.

911Rob 02-11-2008 03:16 PM

I'm drooling! ;)

In the spirit of Pelican Brotherhood, it is wrong to not share.

That's why we don't tell the Miata and Corvette folks. Maybe a pledge of secrecy prior to a PM of the map?

Shadetree930 02-11-2008 04:19 PM

Jay,

I ran out tonight and bought the mount. Tried it out on the way home from BB. Worked great! Wide-angle lens is on order.

SCWDP911 02-11-2008 06:02 PM

Jay,

Thanks for the invite. I wish I could have joined you guys, but I could not get away last w/e. Please email me next time you go as I would love to "unwind" on it sometime... If you ever make out our direction (bewtween Nashville and Memphis) give me a shout and I will show you one here that is one of our local favorites. Might not be as good, but it is good nonetheless.SmileWavy

I drove up through south carolina into north carolina. up over a mountain and I swear north carolina has the most fun roads around.
how they could come up with oval racing makes no sense

Jims5543 02-14-2008 04:18 PM

Jay named the road, Jay named the road, Jay named the road, Jay named the road, Jay named the road, Jay named the road, Jay named the road!!!!

Is it better than the Dragon, lets compare

Dragon
11 miles long 318 turns
Tons of Traffic
LEO all over the place

Jays new road
7 miles long 134 turns (being confirmed)
Not another car on the road
No one goes up there no LEO

Jays new road = Win!
