I'm not ready to drop 2 large

on a road bike.

My Trusty Trek 400 broke a spoke over the weekend. Wheel not repairable, replacement $80, plus $30 for a new cassette and $20 for a chain. Basically $150 and the shop tried to talk me out of it for an 18 yr old bike. It seems to me to run great.

Well, I looked a a few bikes and the one that appealled to me was $2100, except I don't want the carbon frame. I'd rather put the extra dollars into improved gear, than 1 lb in frame.

Geez, this is worse than my Porsche addiction.

And I thought I went overboard when I spent $900 on my mountain bike. However I had my old one for 20 years and I thought it was sort of justified.

Check craigslist, tons of used bikes in near new shape.

If you're a big guy, it's a 63, I have an older C-dale for cheap.

There is always the huffy on sale at wall mart...............p-car guys worry about pounds, road bike anal stressed out guys will spend $800 on titanium spokes that will save ounches or grams.

Take a good healthy dump before you ride to lose last nights dinner and you're ahead $400 bucks for weight.

so you are out 150 if you want to keep pedaling. Why on Earth would you drop two grand on a new bike, go spend that dough on some nice wheels and racing rubber for the car instead

Well, I didn't drop 2 grand. I picked up a last years Trek 2100ZR ($1200). Schimano Ultegra rear and the balance 105 Components, 10 gear rear cassette, Triple front spocket, carbon front and rear forks, carbon seat post, white Al frame, Bontrager race wheels.

I swapped the pedals for ATAC XS TITAN CARBON. I added a Polar Heart rate monitor / cyclo computer. There is no question, I've added 2+ mph to my speed. I am amazed.

I still need to swap my Hobson Pro Hub X2 saddle onto it.

The Trek 400 goes up stairs and becomes the inside trainer.
